  • Absolutely magical. The Concentus Musicus, being involved in the period performance revival since the beginning, has gone along its own way, and has not needed to follow 'fashion'. I still own the original mono Telefunken 2LP set of the Brandenburgs played by them. The tempo on this video is, if anything, even more stately. Wonderful stuff.

  • The recorder or English flute is a woodwind musical instrument of the family known as fipple flutes or internal duct flutes—whistle-like instruments which include the tin whistle and ocarina. The recorder is end-blown and the mouth of the instrument is constricted by a wooden plug, known as a block or fipple.

  • Ich finde, es ist eine schöne Musik.

    It's a beautiful music.

  • I think the recorder player is Helma Franssen.

Gruss!

  • ahheute total streichel bedürftig , wer will schreiben oder telefonieren

  • Wait a minute? Who is Harnoncourt here? I can see him giving the sign to start from a cello desk, and after three minutes I see him conducting. What the hell?

  • 2nd movement is only for soloists and continuo, and there is no tutti. I think N. Harnoncourt played cello in 2nd mov. and came back to the conducting position just after he made a sign of starting 3rd mov.

  • This is awesome! Is it tuned to A415 or something around that?

This sounds slower and more rigid than ones I'm familiar with.

  • deine mudda is schwul ... du hast doch keine ahnung!!!

  • geh und blas deine mutter!

  • ..... no comment...

    il migliore? con Pierre Thibaud

  • quelle horreur ! aucun son, aucun rythme, aucune bonne note, pauvre bach

  • bloody hell thats tight.. who is that trumpeter?? i just can't imagine doing that without holes!! that'd be a bit intense! its hard enough on a picc

  • Friedemann Immer.

Look for Freiburg Barocke Orchestra and you can watch another performance.

  • Finally we see the Concentus on YouTube. Originally the fiddles were almost all Stainers, and a few Albani thrown in for good measure. I have the wonderful mid 1960s recording of the complete Brandenburgs on Telefunken: in my opinion they are still the benchmark. Thanks for posting. Paul :-)

  • I've never seen somebody play recorder so beautifully and well in my life, and if anyone has any ideas send me a resource where i can investigate this horn the guy uses. I've heard of the vent holes never seen it used. Remarkably really.

  • ganz gut!!!

  • Fantastik!

  • Wow! They played that well! I definetely enjoyed watching that.

  • And consider also this video is at least 30 years old when hardly anyone could make period instruments work at all! The quality and musicianship is still far better than most orchestras today. 10/10 to Friedmann Immer and maestro Harnoncourt.

  • Holy hell... that'd be so hard to play that high on that trumpet.

  • Holy Guacamole, man, he's not just playing "high".

    On a trumpet WITHOUT valves!!

  • No, he has valves!

    But not modern,

    they're rotary valves.

But playing Brandenburg on a bugle (no valves) really would be something

  • My friend, he is NOT using valves. His is fingering vent holes in the natural trumpet tubing, however. But no valves.

  • Whoops, my bad

    I don't know how I didn't notice that at 1:54

    Damn that's high

  • The Vents are only required to bring the instrumnet into equal temperament. At the time of Bach this would not have been needed as all the other instruments would have been playing in natural harmonics. Playing this on natural trumpet is actually not as difficult as you might think, if you can play it on piccolo trumpet take your big Bb push down the first and third valves and try it.

  • Its actually called a baroque trumpet and has 3 holes instead of valves, its really hard to play because if you don't have your fingers exactly over the holes strange sounds come out

  • Well conducted !

  • Amazing!!! Everything is synchronized and perfectly played.

  • eh um trompete afinado em dó

do período barroco, e me parece q ele tem 3

Talvez seja a experiência.

  • At last there's a version in wich I can hear all the notes!!!! other ones always is like... forget about Bach; look how fast I can play. i hate that

  • the speed is lovely, gives me time to hear all the notes, music doesn't get better by playing it faster. How many vent holes has he got on the trumpet?

  • The first second is priceless :)

I have replayed it probably 50 times hehe

  • this is sick, that dude owns the natural trumpet

  • Who is that playing the recorder?

  • IMK, she's Harnoncourt's nephew

  • What's a recorder? Which instrument is this?

  • "this is the slowest version"

You have to take into account that this is a period instrument ensemble using a valveless trumpet! Also this recording was done in an especially responsive venue as it probably was in Bach's time, so the slower tempo allows for better resonance and reverberation.

  • yes, i'm well aware of that. i've studied baroque trumpet, as my teacher is a baroque player. and since the tempo for the piece is "andante" it can be performed anywhere from 76BPM to 108BPM. I was simply saying that i'm used to hearing baroque ensembles perform it at a quicker tempo and that this was the first time i had heard it performed slower.

  • whoops my bad, didn't mean to write "andante" haha, forgot which movement i had listened to for a moment there. i meant to write allegro assai.

  • this is the slowest version of it i've ever heard. quite odd.

  • I love trumpets!

  • It's a trumpet in F, presumably pitched a minor third higher than a natural trumpet in D. I guess, that's why it may be shorter?

  • The trumpet looks a bit short to me. What gives?

Also, incidentally, it can't be satisfactory in any way to have the harpsichord stuffed away in the back like that. Were they afraid to move it, or what?

  • thank you.i was overwheled, and then this video, and Bach's music
