Not only that, they die painfully and tragically. I personally do not want to live long enough to see my parents and grandparents die. But I have to accept it. Life's a bitch.
Randy proves that hard work and a positive mental attitude is the key to happiness in life. Only you have the power to make something seem good or make something seem bad. There is always a light at the end of the tunnel, but whether you choose to see it is up to you.

So my point is, given the lottery of life (and therefore death), we should live well in this life and that is the reward, not to wait for life in the next. Whether you believe in such a thing is irrelevant.

What a remarkable man. Most people don't realize that they don't live forever. They may even die tomorrow or next year or next week. There's so many ways to die: choking, car accident, homicide, heart attack, etc. Every day might be your last. So you should live every day like it is your last.

Randy Pausch was my no means an atheist. Just a very reticent Christian. He did not mention God in his lectures or his books because he felt they were a personal matter.
I did not know him, but you can infer from his book that Christianity has been part of his life. His parents were christians, he talked with his minister etc. A reason for not mentioning religion is perhaps to appeal to all demographics - such as yourself.
I think that if he were a true atheist, he would not have said "I will not talk about religion because it is a personal matter", and instead would have omitted that section of the lecture.

Firstly, I don't know that Randy was an athiest. But if he was and "God" stuck him down for being one, he waited 47 years to do it. He gave Randy 47 happy years with a loving family, adoring friends, and a brain that was amazing.
I've seen this video before, and others like it... and I'm in tears again. I knew (and he knew) he was going to die, but somehow I wanted to believe he'd beat the cancer. We lost a wonderful, wonderful man on 7/23/08

i just don´t get it. The guy is dying and he chooses to address people, basically a carpe diem chant. I think it´s inspirational and there´s no need to get creepy over his intentions or whether it´s cliche. I take it most people posting here are not dying, so maybe they don´t require that kind of morale boost. What are we gonna ask from that guy: "Hey yer dyin please don´t make a spectacle of it." Live life to the fullest, follow your childhood dreams, because you only have one life to live, then you are history. It's always nice to leave this life having impacted so many people in a positive way. One of my favourite atheists is gone but we can celebrate having known him in some way.

I did not know him, but you can infer from his book that Christianity has been part of his life. His parents were christians, he talked with his minister etc. A reason for not mentioning religion is perhaps to appeal to all demographics - such as yourself.
I think that if he were a true atheist, he would not have said "I will not talk about religion because it is a personal matter", and instead would have omitted that section of the lecture.

This is far more than your incorrect summation that his only "trick" was to meet death with dignity. He did that and much more.
