Probably a dumb question, but where did you find qboxpro? I can't find anything (as a guest) on 99er either, maybe they block everything unless you sign up?
@TheMindOfPat Oh, it was a dumb question, I found it off the wikipedia page of all things. But I still would love to see a technical description of the "coefficients" or whatever the datasheet calls them... or source code for QBox. ;-P
I so far do not see any reason why I could not import that file into GPL and run it from GPL instead of Assembly as most of the Speech utilities are all GPL Cartridges.
I loved TI stuff back in the day! Had the wrist watches, so kewl, speak and spell, and the computer! Great stuff, even today have the calcs! TY FOR POSTING!
Hello. Could you give me a little help on how to get cartridges/games to work on the Win994a please? I have acquired of the internet, pretty much every cart available. I see some have 2 parts? Some have .g & also .c. Could you please tell me what steps to take in order to get games to run? ANY help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
First computer I ever had was a ti-99/4a. They were great. I use the win994a emulator. Am slowly acquiring an original 99/4a, just getting bits of ebay here and there until I have a complete unit once again. They are a legendary machine, even for their time!
Hi. Thanks for your comments. No, I haven't tried that yet, though I will next time I play with it. I'm not expecting great results. The TMS5220 chip is designed to simulate the physics of the human vocal tract, thus it is only any good at reproducing the sounds a human can reproduce. For example, if you recorded the sounds of drums being played, it probably couldn't reproduce it. If you recorded the sound of a HUMAN making drum sounds with his mouth, you might stand a chance!
@MarkWillsUK Did you ever hear the TMS5220 perform on an Atari Star Wars arcade game ?
It is SO damn amazing what the Atari engineers produced there ! Not only do Darth Vader, Luke and C3PO SOUND like them, but even R2D2 is rendered very faithful and also the "screeching" sounds of the Tie fighters flying past.
This method is very interesting ! Can't get Qboxpro to work though...need INI file(s) ? In theory this can be used to add or change sounds on f.i. Star Wars :)
You S.O.B. =) That's incredible. One day, you and I will have to talk on the phone and you're gonna have to walk me through this... There are several programs I've written in XB that I would love to implement speech into. And not just the CALL SAY words in the back of the XB book. Bloody brilliant!
Do you think so? I thought the voice was actually a good likeness! Of course, this is through an emulator, so it's not quite like the real speech synth, but close. On a real machine, the speech is actually slightly faster, and the frequency slightly higher as a result.
Hi! Well, you need a PC to process the WAV files, no such software exists for the 4A. However, the 4A WILL be able to speak those files perfectly if you transfer them across to the TI :-)
I get the error "No coding table in project" and I can't get it to do anything useful.

I have 64-bit Windows 7 on my computer, so I can't use QBOX. Is there any other software that can convert the .wav file?
furryfeatherycat 1 year ago
@furryfeatherycat This. I'm having the same problem, and no compatibility settings are working. Do I need another emulator, for Windows now?

If you sample a female voice, will it LPC-code a female sounding voice?
I have a pet project called "KikiAI", which uses bits of speech that are strung together. It's still a rough project, and I'm constantly refining it.

This is amazing. Thanks for providing us with this tutorial!
The creative possibilities are endless :)
Have you tried synthesizing any non-vocal sources?

great machines the ti-99/4a. I had an atari 800/800Xl at the time, but always liked the look of the TI systems.

That's amazing compression. I noticed that it changed Earl Evan's tone completely, but is still completely understandable.

DAMN! MAN, that voice is like crystal clear! It makes a handful of modern games' voices look like shit!- great!

Hi,I have a TI99/4a and was wondering how you would transfer the file from a pc to a real ti99/4a.

where can I find that software QBOXPro?
golafs 3 years ago
Hi. As far as I know, it's not publicly downloadable anywhere on the internet.
If you send me a private message with your email address I can email you a zipped copy.
Cheers

Incorrect; it is available. see the TMS5220 wikipedia page, check out the bottom of the page, the program is linked to there. qboxpro.zip

quick question. If I have a full blown 99/4a system, can I do this same thing? In other words, is having an emulator a substitute for the real thing?
