DAMN THIS IS THA SHIT BUT EVERYTIME I SEE TITE ASS BANDS PLAY CBGBs I GET ALL FUKIN BUMMED THAT I WILL NEVER GET TO GO THERE N SEE A TITE ASS BAND PLAY THERE
Don`t get bummed. They are tearing down Yankee Staduim, Fenway and Wrigley won`t be far behind. That`s life. At least you can still go the Whiskey a go-go and other places alike.
Loses some of the prestige, but from what I hear, the new owner of CBGB's is planning on moving the locale to Las Vegas - the new location may help show some real West Coast/Mid-West talent.
it sad that every body ditched mike and hes the only original one left, in my opinion i dennis was still here he would still be in SxDx and by mikes side
The landlord was not the club owner. The stockyard stoics didn't like CBGB... so? 1,000 other bands did. As to losing its integrity. We busted our ass to the end to help the local scene and book cool shows. If trendy kids cameand had their picture taken outside, that wasn't our fault. Maybe if we sold out our integrity we could have stayed open.
Do you mean me or MTV? I thought it was funny that Social D were being presented as a hip new "buzz clip" type band. I'm sure you well know that that would've been a better informed perspective of the band about a decade before this interview, only no one in the mainstream music media was "commenting" back then...
This was a PR piece their publicist probably arranged to promote Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell. This was the closest to mainstream recognition the band had ever gotten. So there was a mainstream "buzz" going on about the band. This disc was more accessible to the general public than their previous ones because it was less angry and the production was smoother with more discernable vocals. I thought you were doubting there had been any interest in them at the time.
As I can painfully share from first hand knowledge, there will be no recent videos set in CBGB. The barren metal skeleten that once housed its famous markee is f*ckin pitiful.
As much as I mourn the death of CBGB, their management's claim that they didn't know rent hadn't been paid in many many months has to be bogus. The rent issue was reported in the press. I have no first hand knowledge about it.
Place should've been given lanmark status. NYC featured it in tv commercials designed to impress the Olympic committee and attract the games here. The rent was astronomical and going to a nonprofit landlord who was already making a bundle from Hilly (who continued to pay, less the increase). More effective city mediation or outright intervention should've been brokered. 3 "rock n' roll hall of fame" bands were birthed here. That should mean something to the powers that be.
I worked there for years. The rent was paid. Unpaid rent was not an issue, rgardless of what the landlord said t the press. Our lease expired and the landlord didn't want to renew it. We had the money to stay. they didn't want us.
Thanks for the clarification. I see where your summary puts the vjs comment in perspective, and in fact understood that in the first place. In retrospect however, I think Somewhere is a poor candidate for turning point; it showed the least between-album maturation of any Soc D release, S/T represented a larger jump in visibility, and it wasn't until White Light that the band went gold.
@KeithRamone FALSE: Social Distortion's self titled album released in 1990, was their first gold album, and the second gold album was Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell which was released in 1992. This interview is from 1992. Old comment though.
I've got that entire set at CBGB's on bootleg DVD.Makes me feel old seeing Mike looking as young as he does here,& hearing Dennis again.Mike played the game his way,& won...

Actually let me retract that last sentence. I thought you were under the impression it was a fairly recent video and no one knew who they were.
