Gods can not be harmed/bleed/die etc. Leo knew he was going to die he was just trying to buy some time and to get his countrymen behind him. No one thought they could win the war. Thus the legend Leo had a goal of showing that Xerxis was no God and could be harmed and defeated.

Also Spartans tactics are not used today they were phased out around 100 years or so after the battle of thermoplyae (spelling?) for a more mobile style of warfare that could compete with the evolution of other countries tactics and if I remember right the chariot. Maybe the "ideas" that the Spartans had about warfare is still used but that's it. They did however wear armor. Normally greaves, breastplate, helm, and gauntlets. The underwear and capes is simply to get women drooling and make money

Ok they are right the immortals were not Samurai nor did they look anywhere near what they did in the movie. They wore a medium type armor and them helms were designed as faceless masks. They are rumors that their clothes were a dark red and they cut their tongues out. All of this was designed as psych warfare. You couldn't tell if he was bleeding or if he was dead unless he wasn't moving. Though oddly enough the "ninjas" of japan also wore the dark red clothing for the same reason.
