Salwa kingdom is grouped among the western kingdoms in the epic Mahabharata, close to Madra Kingdom. Martikavati is mentioned as its capital. The famous prince Satyavan was from Salwa. He married the Madra princess, Savitri, the daughter of Madra king Aswapati. The history of Satyavan and Savitri is immortalised in Mahabharata with 7 chapters 3:291 to 3:297 dedicated to it. If people read this epic in school in greater detail, it could reinforce the idea of being Indian in young minds but alas.
The northern & western kingdoms identified as Maratha or Rajputana were in that sense much more recent, but they all came from the same stock as the rest of the nation.
