  • AND YOU CALL THAT CLEAN??!

  • Sounds thin and tinny

  • There is obviously so effects being run through the effects loop. I love how they make it look like you just plug into the windsor, turn a few knobs, and BOOM you get that sound. lol

  • This amp head got no love because people didn't understand what a one channel Plexi or JCM 800 was all about. There's nothing to hide behind, it will make you sound amazing or terrible and unmasks bad playing style. It also delivers big rewards to patient guitarists who spend time dialing in their sound. Sounds way better with good speakers, ditch the Peavey Blue Marvels.

  • This video makes the amp sound like nothing but treble and reverb? is it just the video?

  • @that1stupidkid613 i think its because its only 240p

  • @that1stupidkid613 yea, I gig with one of these. I have a marshall cab with eminence legend 35w's in it, you can actually dial in a decent clean tone with the higher wattage speakers as well. I had a 5150 amp a while back, the distortion sound is actually pretty damn on par with that. For the price you cant beat it. Careful, its LOUD!

  • @that1stupidkid613 YES!!! This video makes this amp sound Horrible! Its a very decent amp when re-tubed. For the price you cant beat it.

  • The only real bitch I have with Riario's amp demos are that he runs effects in the chain. If you're going to give an honest appraisal of the sound, guitar, cord, amp. Theamp's natural sound is really good, and killer price...downfall is that getting a clean tone entails either mods, or using another amp.

  • i have this head with a valveking slant cab

  • @Jakeypops100 I have the same VK cab, would you recommend a windsor to go with it?? especially for the price

  • @chickabuka yeah definitely. They sound great together. The valveking cab actually sounds better than the

windsor cab itself. Its a great head

  • Comment removed

  • @TheGuitarver no, this a tube amp through and through. it uses four EL34's and either Five or Six 12AX7's. it's price may be surprising considering its not S.S, but also keep in mind they are: making it in china, Making it only one channel, using cheaper knobs, etc. so that you can afford a true high powered tube amp for not alot of money.

  • @penguinChild98 the amp has 3 12ax7's which equals 2 preamp tubes and 1 phase inverter

  • @gillenh2o oh, thanks for correcting me, i coulda sworn on five but oh well, thanks. i just dont get how three could generate enough gain, but im not an expert on tube amps so im not very qualified to talk about this stuff. thanks and have a good day.

  • @TheGuitarver made in china to keep cost down

  • @TheGuitarver Did you watch the video? Or were you being sarcastic, because it says in the video that it has ax7s and like 5 el34 tubes

  • i hate this idiot

  • im about to get me one of these, but im without a band right now, so i wonder if i can use at home in my apartment without blowing otu my windows and scaring away my neighbours???

  • @mudfly3 It's deafening when cranked, but the master volume will bring it down to reasonable volume.

Cranked, though, you can be heard half a mile away.

  • @AeolianSeventh ok thanks

  • @mudfly3 switch the 12ax7 tubes to 12au7's and add a boost pedal (overdrive) also use a balanced 12at7 for a phase inverter tube, this will scale back the power quite a bit, i usevthis tube combination to clean the amps distortion up so i can have a beautiful clean tone

  • Can it do Metal? Hell yes! as long as you know how to play...

  • Beware of all Guitar World demos, they always sound like shit. I do own a Peavey Windsor head, and it sounds amazing, all stock. It's not a bedroom amp, the louder it gets, the better it sounds. It sounds like a JCM 800, which was Peavey's intention when they designed this head. I mostly use it as a "power amp", going straight to the loop return from my JMP-1, that way I take advantage of the tone and Midi switching capabilities of the JMP-1, and it allows me to also play at lower volume.

  • @anthonylv64 it is not based on a jcm 800, it is based on marshall amps from the 60's and 70's, the jcm 800 is an 80's era marshall it is loosly based on jtm/plexi era but with more features and more gain. to make the amp react more on the vintage side use the low gain input - hope this helps clarify

  • This is a tremendous amp. This thing is better than any Marshall I've ever had including a 800 2204 and a JCM 900. I've been playing for over 30 years and it's the best amp I've ever played through for Rock and Classic Metal.

  • Christ, the mids! THE MIDS ARE SHREDDING MY EARS!

  • one question, does it have a good metal tone, it seems like everyone who reviews these amps just plays rock and blues

  • I don't think I could make this amp sound this bad if I tried to on purpose..How does GW do it??

  • These guitar world guys never seem to get their EQ's right.

  • I've had no experience with tube amps, does pre-amp volume essentially determine the amount of gain?

  • @cottohatton yes that's exactly what the pre amp volume does. Master volume determines the actual loudness of the amp, and in extreme cases (ie. when the master volume is on full) will produce additional distortion.

  • it's not the EQ, it's the shitty audio quality. Nothing to do with this amp

  • Worst EQ ever. This amp sounds 1000x better than this.

  • Is this the same thing (basically) as the Studio 20 amp?

  • Sounds like crappy amp i'll go for Vypyr

  • @zleepyjan its not go for this its this video which is crap

the windsor is an amasing amp

its a peavey jcm 800 lol

  • peavey should tell this guy to stop! he sucks. is this a tube amp it sounds like an 8 in crate solid state. and can you get a clean tone at all????

  • It's really hard to hear any difference between the settings he's changing. this video doesn't do the head justice really, must be the way it was recorded or something

  • ....

how is it possible to make this amp sound thin and horrid? I've seen plenty of demos of the head and combo, and this guitarworld vid is the only one that gets a bad tone out of this amp. I'd comment more but I have to do something about the angry bees in my ears

  • is it just me or is the head enormous?

  • @woodsy2069 That's what she said :)

  • @woodsy2069 its massive.. weighs bout 50 lbs

  • I tried one of these and I thought it sounded great! Better than some Marshalls that cost 4 times as much. For some reason it sounds like Paul has his rig running through a Harmonizer or something. This vid just doesn't give a good demo of the real sound of this thing.

  • Plays it - sounds bad

Adjusts EQ - exactly the same

    Raises Pre-amp gain- still bad

Lowers gain pushes boost - still the same

    Class A/B - no difference,

    Clean - sounds like dist

I wouls rather buy a CRATE Blue Voodoo for $100 on CL

but my mesa does just fine-

  • @MikefromMesia You realize that through Youtube, you're going to get a real hard compressed sound out of vids right? That's why it's better to use these vids to get an idea of what the amp sounds like, the best thing to do is actually try it.

  • He loves his treble

  • The windsor is terrible on its own, seriously. What I do is run it through and Orange thunderverb too and then into an Ampeg STV-somthingorother.

It's a wierd fucking mix but boy do you get an epic sound.

  • Shame about the phasing issues in this video, I would have liked the hear the amp properly

  • I dont know if its the way Paul has this amp set up.......but this thing sounds like SHIT. Very thin sounding

  • good for metal?

  • @TheNohcim This is like the opposite of what you want if you play metal...

  • @xHighPotencyx Actually no, I looked up Metal Demos and this thing kicks

  • @TheNohcim You'll need a distortion pedal to play metal with this.

  • @xHighPotencyx Guitar World did not demo this correctly, this CAN pull off metal.

  • @TheNohcim almost any amp you buy today can, its hard for me to find one that dosent have too much gain

  • @TheNohcim Dude i know someone who has this amp.. if you want to play real metal, you'll need a distortion pedal.

  • @xHighPotencyx

how ignorant, if you want to play metal, just buy a METAL amp, examples; Peavey triple XXX, Peavey 5150, Peavey JSX, this amplifier is a very "British style sound" You idiot, listen to what Paul says at 0:50, It is based on amplifiers from the 60's and 70's which lack of body, bottom and low end, which are very, very common with Metal.

  • Comment removed

  • @Shyuum You sir, are a total dumbass.

  • @bronzehydra3

And you an ignorant, stupid cunt.

  • @Shyuum and how is that?

  • @bronzehydra3

By calling me a dumbass when I was right, this amplifier it's not made for Metal, maybe 80's kinda Saxon/UFO/Ozzy Osbourne/Dio but not Modern Metal and you don't necessary need a "distortion" pedal like the other guy said, I mean what is the point of having an ALL TUBE amplifier when you're going to throw a cheap distortion pedal infront of the clean channel? you tell me.

  • @Shyuum You get like 10 times the bad assness by using pedals on all tube amps, bitch.

  • @bronzehydra3

You tell me "asshole" (you seem very American), what is the point of an all-tube head if you are going to play on the clean channel with a distortion pedal, eh?

If it was a overdrive pedal, then ok, but no, a DISTORTION Pedal, go fuck yourself please, and mind your own business.

  • @Shyuum I'm actually canadian, and I play in FOUR metal bands! All of them are incredible.

And I use an engl invader with a BOSS Mega Distortion! Who's the bitch now, bitch!

  • @bronzehydra3

Eh, you? Because you're an idiot and you probably know shit about guitar amplifiers as I see.

  • @Shyuum Yeah, I do know shit about guitars. A LOT of shit actually. I know that my equipment is already better than the shit you have, that is if you even play guitar, you fuckin poser ass bitch

  • @bronzehydra3

I just went to your profile and it seems that you're just a troll and plus you play bass? eh yeah you know shit about guitars, and plus people leaving hate comments on your profile make me think that you're a loser, that been said, I'm done with you!

    Laters.

  • @Shyuum hahaha, Cannot believe it took you that long to figure out i was trolling... Especially after the Engl Invader and Boss Mega Distortion... hahaha

  • @bronzehydra3

Haha there are two things in this YouTube world, idiots and trolls.

  • @Shyuum OK... so which one are you?

  • @bronzehydra3 jazz > metal

  • Comment removed

  • @Shyuum I never said he should use a cheap pedal. There are plenty of high-gain and high-end distortion pedals, i.e. the Ibanez TK. If anything, a good distortion pedal would make this amp better. It's single channel, and gets muddy (like all amps do) when you push the gain up all the way. A distortion pedal would essentially make it a 2-channel amp and give you better tone and more versatility.

  • @xHighPotencyx

the Ibanez TK it's an OVERDRIVE PEDAL, not a distortion pedal, just to make things clear, that's why I went nuts.

  • @Shyuum Actually, there is an OD and a Distortion version. Obviously I was referring to the distortion one. If you don't believe me, check their website, and make sure you know what you're talking about before you troll around the internet flaming people with your misguided facts and opinions.

  • @xHighPotencyx

Troll? GO FUCK YOURSELF, I mean seriously, you know SHIT about guitar amps, why would you want to put a distortion pedal when your amplifier has more "gain" than the damn fucking shitty pedal, Fucking idiot.

  • @Shyuum Gee I don't know, maybe the amp doesn't have enough gain to play what you want to without the (not fucking shitty) pedal? The windsor is overall just a mediocre amp, anyways.

  • @Shyuum some amps do just have a crappy dirty channel, and it sounds better to have a distortion pedal through the clean channel...like for instance, the Marshall Artist 3203

  • does anyone else notice that guitar world does like the worst amp reviews every review has this like super gay chorus sound to it i can only imagin its cause he wars that gay microphone and they mic the cab and the two signals mixing must be like slightly delayed or something but the reviews all have the same overtone. i hate it so much

  • paul makes is sound bad.

  • check out the Windsor head through Mesa cabinet video. It is the best demo of this amp on You Tube. I have this amp. I use an rp500 for hi-gain sounds. Any good distortion pedal can make this amp warm and thick. I paid 250. for the head and it was worth the money.

  • Or just use a boost pedal or a distortion pedal in-front of it..

  • i was testing that amp - it sounded way better than the valveking i used to own

  • @Obigrobi666

the valveking sounds much better! i got both.

  • @MRWHITE3535

then thats your opinion - i used to own the valveking and i played the windsor at the guitar store and i liked the windsor much more

  • @Obigrobi666

the windsor is a nice amp.

  • Paul's a great player, but always ruins the demo's with effects. Sucks...

  • Is it good for metal music?

  • @gragi11 Yes!!!

  • @gragi11

Nope. This amp sounds almost like a classic JMP or Super Lead with just a little more gain.. But if you're going to play Metal i'd rather go for the Peavey Valveking instead of this, since it has a bit more gain..

  • @MrChallenger2000 agreed. i am still waiting for a mesa of my own, but i played a friends dual recto and there is no comparison at all. both my avt marshalls beat this amp. the peavey just sounds weak and shrill in my opinion.

  • @mycrimsonregrets ou have to understand, you're also listening to a youtube video of said amp. Unless you tried it out in person..

  • @punkmusicmetal yes, i know. i have also played that and the peavey xxx head in person. i prefer the xxx over the windsor and much prefer the mesa dual rectofier. for softer distortion and and more vintage/ british sound this amp is decent, but i have noticed when i played it that the top end is very prominent. any gear review i give is based off of personal experience with the gear. not trying to be mean, just giving you my take on it. have a good one.

  • If this amp dies on you it is probably the fuse on the back. It is a special white ceramic fuse. This problem is common on this amp. Email me if you need one.

  • As an owner of about 20 amps this one gives me probably the best CLEAN sound. You do need to know how to work the knobs.

  • The Peavey Windsor is the worst amp I have EVER HEARD!

  • @shreddingriffs247 All The Amp Needed Was To Be Adjusted By Somebody That Knows How To Adjust The Sound!!!

  • @MrChallenger2000 ROFL! A guitar amp is a tool. You use it not because it was made in the US or because it was made in China, YOU USE IT BECAUSE IT SOUNDS GOOD.

    Fucking prick.

  • all the distortions samples of amps on these guitarworld demos sound so similar. They should get a better mic. The distortion samples of this amp sound like the samples of the VOX AD100XL demo.

  • hey do you think is better a Peavey windsor or a B52 LS-412A im talking about cavinets answer me please or anybody else cause i wanna to buy the cavinet !!!but im not sure yet thanks!

  • Wheres the meat and potatoes? Sounds a bit shrill here. I'm sure this amp sounds better than this if you set the eq up.

  • I have this amp, its amazing, it has an amazing marshall-like tone, this video sucks ass, it sounds trebley

  • i own this amp, and it has one of the cleanest sounds i have EVER HEARD

  • this guys an idiot it cleans up really good. This fag is playing with the pre amp really high. I got this amp and i play metal. I'm running a metal zone through it with Jackson Dinky emg hz and plays so fucking good. Then ill play it through a 1960's fender strat and it sounds like a dream you can go from a real nice jazzy sustain sound to a nice blues bite to a twangy funk sound after the i played it on a Gibson sg standard and man you can get that Whole Lotta Love/ Heart breaker sound

  • THis amp sounds like it can get pretty thick, saturated, spongey overdrive. its only $400, so it cant be that good.

  • bla bla bla what? It all sounds exactly the same no matter what adjustments the guy makes. Pretty funny. Listen to him playing at the begnning of the video and fast forward the video to the end, sounds the same.

  • this amp sounds like shit.

  • It does not have a clean channel???

  • @Eraj1979 I play on one with a strat and when i roll off on the guitars vol, even if i have the preamp vol cranked, it cleans up beautifully.

  • @BKDocHoliday what you mean roll off the guitars vol?

  • @milkydeath rolling the volume knob on the guitar back, as in full blast then putting it to a lower setting such as half way (50 percent)

  • @DakotaPlaysGuitar alright thanks

  • Yeah kinda but I think most of it was because of the mic. I think they upgraded their mic and camera on their newly recorded stuff.

  • Sounds like a can full of really mad bees.

  • @beau5375 It's not the amp's fault. I've heard this amp

in person and it doesn't sound tinny at all. it's the way it's

being mic'd. They've done a terrible job with however

    they're micing it.

  • no wonder it sounds like shit, .. look how he has the knobs set up , no bottom end, no character, ..nothing

  • Yeah. actually, the way I like it is all eq (including reso and presence) set at 0, master and texture cranked, using preamp volume as master volume. I use an OD pedal (screamin blues is a good cheap one) for a lot of the gain, and an MXR 10 band EQ in the FX loop for the EQ stuff.

  • Comment removed

  • Damn people PLEASE don't judge this amp based on this tone. This is the worst I've EVER heard from this amp, i don't even know how it's possible for it to sound so bad. There are tons of great videos showcasing this thing's tone; i particularly like the video entitled "new amp", in which he boosts it with a tubescreamer. it sounds great.

  • I have to agree here. I can't get my Windsor to sound this bad. Maybe he's using a crappy mic. or something.

  • yea , who knows? i have this stack and it fuckin rocks, ..plus it is louder as all hell!!

  • Why does this guys demos always sound like shit?

  • cuz ur shit

  • whoah! kk this amp isnt really ment to compete with Marshall, Mesa, Fender, Vox or any uber Hi Gain amp out there.

This amp is meant to be a straight forward gain amp that is supposed to be switched to a clean amp for cleans....Lots of guys do that....Foo Fighters did that till they got the road king. They switched between Dual Rec and vox.

I do this exactly and i personally and blown away buy the tone. I have a crunch lab in my guitar though. This amp is meant to be a affordable tube amp

  • Sounds like ass!

  • ...cuz marshalls sound better.........

  • The electronic of the Windsor is exact the same as in a Marshall 2203!

  • sounds to winey put some bass and mids

  • I got one a month ago. Sound good. I got a sonic maximizer for it and it really takes out the mud to make it punchier and tighter sounding. For heavier stuff I plugged in an old RP55 pedal and I couldn't believe the amazing tone. Using the Marshall model it sounded like a JCM 900. So any distortion pedal will sound great through this rig.

  • So this amp is based on the Marshall JCM-800 2203 so basically you can pump this motherfucker as hard as you want i mean Kerry fucking King uses a JCM-800 and this amp is almost identical to the Marshall except Peavey uses a plate-fed tone stack instead of the Marshall-trademarked cathode follower.

  • This is not a high gain amp

  • jcm 800s don't even have that much gain. Even with the gain cranked, you can only get into mid gain character. And kerry kings jcm 800 is modded for more gain. and his signature one i think is cascaded for more gain.

  • @ruffles272 WELL WHO DOESNT MOD ALL THEIR AMPS NE WAY

  • People that don't want to waste their money for a mod that they may not even like. Oh, and jimmy page, Slash, Dave mustaine, Jimi hendrix, etc. Some people like pure tone.

  • @ruffles272 Jimmy page was Notorious for moding his marshalls and his sun amps. Slash didnt due much with gear but designed his own amp which was based on a mod his tech did on his marshall jubilee. Plus pure tone doesnt come through an amp its in your fingers look at someone like jeff beck Randy Rhoads tony Iommi or Evh they mod their amps have great tone but most of it comes through their fingers.

  • It's a great sounding amp. Great for live, really nails the classic tone.

Some of these cheap amps turn into a pile of particle board splinters if you drop them though.

  • this one's pretty sturdy though

  • what would be the settings to make it as close as possible sound like metallica's guitars in hi-gain distortion mode

  • gain and pres. and res. all the way up high on treb and bass, and cut the mids way out

  • treble at 8 bass at 7 and mid at 2.5.

pre amp volume on maximum and boost.

i would add a distortion or and overdrive pedal

  • A friend of mine bought one of these recently brand-new and doesn't like it, although I think it sounds great, would you run the distortion or and overdrive pedal through the effect loop?

  • i would run an MXR zakk wylde pedal through the front or a distortion+ because you need a pedal that doesnt have 2 much gain

  • Yowsa

I just got mine merry X-mas to me

It is on a EVH 5150III cab 30W celestion greenbacks

Mine cleans up super clean at 1 on the pre and high on the master. Lots of volume

This combo on a Boss metalzone sounds tight as heck awsome pantera tone

I saw it posted the head does not pick up harmonics. LOL this thing screams pinch harmonics like zakk wylde with the metalzone

Just a few hours dialing on this thing but wow am I happy.

I will experiment with tubes but the stockers sound good.

  • (Hi-gain input)

    Preamp Gain --> 8.5

    Bass --> 5.5

    Mid --> 4.5

    Treble --> 1.5

    Resonance --> 6

    Presence --> 4

    Perfect hard rock tone.

  • Then you can cut the resonance and slightly boost the treble for stuff like Led Zeppelin.

  • I'd put the mids up... Thats just me though.

  • @ruffles272 plus wat does moneyy mater a mod is only a couple of hundred to a thousand bucks

  • Normally, yeh. But not on this amp. The reason is because the mids high make your lead sound all buzz (seems to boost preamp gain? i don't know...).

  • The Peavey Windsor Head is great and can be easily modded for more clean gain with different preamp tubes. DO NOT use this head with Peavey Blue Marvel speakers. Blue Marvel should be called "Bland Marvel" and produce sound that has no bass, no warmth and no detail. ANY other cheap generic guitar speaker will sound better.

  • i wanna take this

  • Ok im convinced i am gettin one.

  • I was misled. I thought it said "demo by Paul Gilbert" but its just plain old paul.

  • oh and...I'm terribly sorry for sounding like an ass to Guitar World but I think that people who are interested in this Head should know that this is nothing close to what the Windsor is capable of :)

  • OMFG!...I own this amp...and you really have to dial the EQ soo bad...to make it sound like this....BRAVO Guitar World for making a fantastic amp sound like this.

Mine sounds totally different when you set everything at 12o clock. This guy either has the Master Volume WAAAY down...Or...he should've used a different Speaker Cabinet.

I've played my windsor through a Marshall MC212 and it sounded better then this.Ooh and you should just listen to what this Head can do through a Marshall 1960 4x12!

  • My amp sounds like that with all at 12:00 at high volume. At high volume the mids & treble ranges of the amp sounds really harsh and buzzy like that. I turn those down and the bass/resonance up and it sounds fantastic.

  • That is about it. I play mine through a 75 watt 1x12 and it sounds cleaner but I use a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe for my clean stuff.

  • is that really as clean as it gets? or in this demo is it too cranked ?

  • @Lovasi2

    it has no clean

  • what kindof an amp doesent have a clean

  • I like the sound of this amp. It has a thick classic Marshall type tone. There are some terrible You Tube video's with this amp. You can't judge it by them unless your computer is hooked up to a 4X12 cabinet with vintage 30's. This really needs to be test driven in person. Try to find a 100 watt tube amp for $250. new. It is a great deal if you need huge volume at a low price. The video showing it hooked up to a Mesa boogie cabinet is the best sounding on You Tube if you can't try one.

  • Yeah, there's a huge difference with that Mesa cab. Also take note this guitar (Peavey HP Special CT) usually can take a crappy solid state amp and make it sound good. The moral is to find the right combination of guitar, amp, and speakers. The BEST combination that we know of now with the Windsor is of course the PRS guitar and the Mesa 1x12W. And that costs less (even with the price of the guitar) than most Mesa setups and sounds pretty good too based on that vid (even w/cam audio).

  • Comment removed

  • The Windsor sounds best on another You Tube video search "Mesa Cabinet Windsor"

  • ive played tons of shows and yes, a 100watt tube head is needed. i play LOUD. much more energy and presence. people can feel the music as well as hear it.

  • Wow. What an interesting debate. Hands up who's done a gig in a place where they actually needed an amp this big? Or this ugly? I use a 12 watt combo, it's plenty loud enough and is very handsome

  • Maybe it's not needed but it's damn cool!

  • is this amp possibly good for old school metallica stuff like kill 'em all ?

  • can you get a good metal song with this amp since it's pretty cheap? i have emgs and i'm thinking of a OD pedal, do you think it'll work? and i mean really metal sound, compared to the 5150

  • i meant metal sound, not song

  • I'm gonna probably combine this with a Marshall 1960A 4x12 for a Led Zeppelin sound...anyone think this is a bad idea?

  • probably a bad idea dude... just save up and get a marshall if you're looking for a zeppelin sound. buy a JCM head used for $600. Bottom line, don't buy a peavey, its a very depreciating investment. Mesa Boogie, Orange, Sunn, Marshall, Fender, all great amps to choose from. Always go tube, my friend.

  • Peavey makes badass amps for people who don't have a record deal and wallet to go with it!

Boogie's are overpriced one trick pony's.

The only Orange, Marshall's or Fenders amps that are worth a damn were last made in the early 80's(60's for Fender) and you ain't getting them for $600! Now that's not to say that they don't make quality amps today. But if you truly want one, you'll have to pay for the Custom Shop or Hand wired logo on them!

I don't buy an amp as an investment. I buy it to rock!

  • Thanks redrocker. Happy 11th birthday, as well.
