Can someone give me a recommendation on a knot to use in conjunction with the bowline. Say I use a bowline to tie a rope to a tree, then in the other end I have something that I need to attach to the tree but keep the line nice and taut. Seems I would need some kind of one way sliding knot?
Thanks a heap for this! Just started my first day at a salmon farm in Tasmania......all they do is tie bowlines all day, ......was feeling like a chump... now I feel like a champ!
Thank you so much. I can tie the heck out of a bowline knot, but I always run into trouble tying it to something at my boat. his one's going to remain in my fav's for a while. You rock!
Not too many vids applying this usefull knot.
@AJD. Of course this is a bowline knot! you must be confused.
Just practicing this now, your video shows it very well, I need to tie one for a ground anchor in my dead rope which goes into a clove hitch to belay my heavy friend :D
It should be mentioned that while these are excellent instructions, it is easy to make a mistake and wind up with whats called an outside bowline rather than the desired inside bowline. I mention this because it is an easy mistake to make and you could wind up with a problem the knot was intended to avoid.
Thank you. Most people and diagrams show this knot tied by itself... I've never understood that. I really can't think of why you would tie a bowline to nothing? It is the practical applications that make this so valuable. You're always going to tie it to something, be it a post, bumper, boat or a person.
@PalateProductions or a caribeener. my friend is an arborist and I do side jobs with him, he requires me to know these knots so thank you for this explaination! really/!!
Thank you. Your video is the easiest I've seen. I've tried to tie a bowline from drawn illustrations & photographs but yours works for me. I'm confident that I can do it now.
The bowline is one of a few knots that can be untied no matter how wet or how much force has been exerted on the knot. There is no real trick to untie it. Just push the line back through the hole or you can push the loop down the line.
THANK YOU for showing this. This is an important knot to know!! It is one of the only knots you ca untie no matter how tight or wet the rope gets!! You are why there is YouTube!!

Learn it once this way and you'll never forget: Bunny comes up the hole, goes around the tree and goes back down the hole.

@masm60 It is easy to untie intentionally, but it won't come un-done by itself if that is what you mean.
