Theres a similar technique old skool car mechanics use on rusted bolts but as it's cooling down they hold a burning candle near it or something. The idea is that as it's cooling down it sucks in some wax which apparently loosens it up no end.
@PLBIV you said humboldt.... meaning chicago.... meaning that's where i live. i have a seat post stuck in a bike that i'm restoring and ive been tryin to get it out for like a month... nevermind
@PLBIV OOOOOOHHHHHH.... It all clicks now. Unfortunately when I started grad school I left the city and moved out to the boonies. Plus, you can totally do this, I have faith in you :)
Dude the music was really annoying and made it hard to hear what you were saying sometimes, maybe you should add a transcript in the description below the video : )
@Redshift21 you could always turn on closed captioning :) The words in the video are not the important part, This could have been a silent video and still gotten the technique across
Part one of comment/question: I am currently faced with trying to remove a stuck seat post, and am not having much luck with it. After seeing this clip, I am planning to next try the method that you've come up with here. Evidently, it's a good one. Here's hoping I have similar success using it because I’ve had no success by using plain force and leverage.
Part two of comment/question: But I still have a question about what I should do afterwards. Judging from a few things I’ve read on the topic, the problem seems to be the result of a reaction that occurs when an aluminum post is left in contact with a steel frame. So I am assuming this problem can be prevented from happening again if I junk the old post and replace it with a steel post. Is this correct?
@PreCodeMovies That is a good question. I am just using a new seatpost, but I don't know if there will be more or less of a problem with that. I will observe and if I find anything I will let you know. I hope it works for you!
@PreCodeMovies you can stop this from happening again by simply greasing the post when you put it in, copper grease is good but any grease would do as this is not (normally) a high heat area, if you don't have any grease then Petroleum jelly will do fine, these an old navy saying, "if it moves grease it and if it don't move paint it", seeing as you need it to move now and then you'd better grease it : )

Howdo Dylan, Used your method on a Mongoose Ibis post thats been stuck for years, it took me 1 hour to get it out. I used plumbers pipe freeze to cool the alloy and could hear it creaking the first time I froze it. It took 3 reps and a engineers bench vice clamping the post then uised the frame to twist it out.
Oh, that music really makes a good difference!

@bcburdoa
The music was distracting and very annoying....not at all integral to the video. Keep up the good work.

@Ernotolis No, it's a friend of mine's music. It's funny that you ask that because one of his favorite bands is godspeed you black emperor
