Your English is AMAZING! How long have you been learning English? May I recommend a video of you describing a household item that we can all see on Camera in nothing but Dutch with Dutch subtitles? That would be awesome. Your videos are great! I totally SUB'd
hey dude. this is Ali and i am from Afghanistan.your videos are just splendid.i really enjoy when i get to learn the lessons.how should i thank u i have got no ways for that.but after all thank u so much.i had a question as well.that what is the vowels and how do we pronounce them and what are the verbs like am , is, are,i mean to be verbs......please help me with this i would be more then thankful of you.thank. and to not forget HAPPY BIRTHDAY.....it may brings you lots of joy and gladness.oye
@rohullahaliali A- in the word 'all' E- in the word 'hey' I- as in 'steel' O- in 'open' U- 'you' but slightly different OE- as in mooo (the sound a cow makes :P). And for the verb to be. I am-ik ben, he is-hij is, you are-jij bent, you are(more than 1 person)- jullie zijn, we are-wij zijn. Hope it helped a bit. The vowels A,E and O can also be pronounced differently. I am not a teacher but I tried the best I could and if you have more questions I'd love to answer them ^^
@REALNassshole zij and ze is used to point out a single person (in this case when you use zij or ze it's about a girl/women. Ze is also used to point out a group of people. Ze in english would be they. For example: Ze zijn buiten. In english They are outside.
@eowen515 Thank you for the reply, but not it didn't help haha. I know what they mean, I'm just wondering why sometimes it's written Zij and other times Ze. "Zij is mijn vrouw" or "Ze is mijn vrouw"
@REALNassshole "zij" and "ze" basically have the same meaning. I prefer "zij" because it sounds more.. Proper or something, but that's just my weird mind I guess.. :P
I don't really know why we have two words which basically mean the same thing..
@miezziej Ok, so basically, it's like the pronunciation of the "the" in english. I mean, there's no difference wether you say "I go to de videoclub" or "I go to die videoclub". Unless there's some rule about the germanic root of "the" (die/der)? Mmm?
@REALNassshole there is a difference in "de" and "die". "I go to de videoclub" is like "the videoclub" in English. But when you say; "I go to die videoclub" it's like "that videoclub" in English.
@fku89 hey, the w does always sound like it sounds in week, but it's not the same as a v! I made a video about the pronunciation of the W. It's on my channel in the playlist "Dutch Pronunciation" :)
make a video on how to pronounce the G in Nederlands. Some pronounce it as K with an H sound at the end and some just make it sound like its rolling a G. I'm not sure and I'm afraid I'm doing it wrong.
Ik spreek perfect nederlands , ik ben namelijks Vlaams. Maar ik vind het toch zeer amusant om ze te bekijken. Je legt alles zeer goed uit , zelfs je Engelse uitspraak is zeer mooi. Ik heb al veel Nederlandse mensen gehoord die Engels praten , en dat klonk nogal vreemd...
i'm celebrating christmas this year in holland because my bf has family down there.. this is helpful :) dankjewel :D omg i think I spelled that correctly? must celebrate with a glass of water!
@dutchforn00bs My name is Thomas.I will watch all your videos before I explore this world of dutch hence get acquinted with basics from you.Good job I like it,as you said(tot ziens/vaarwel).Good to hear from you.
It sounded like a mix of the english and scandinavian alphabet. When you said "Vrijdag" you sounded almost exactley like if someone from south Sweden would say "fredag"
@dutchforn00bs Well it's because our accent in the south is the accent wich is closest to for example German and dutch. We have some accents in the west that are distant relatives with norwegian accents, accent's in the east wich sound like some baltic accent or something.
It seems you've fallen from the heaven. Well then, I've been studing Dutch for a couple of months, I'm a self -thaught man and learn languages very easily but I find just robotic and unnatural conversations on audio books. Could you please teach us a few idioms and bit of your daily informal Dutch?. I need to talk to you because I'm looking for indications on good books, once living in Brazil you can't find good books on Dutch anywhere. Is there a way for we to talk?
@2112201211 You can email me (dutchforn00bs at gmail dot com), or add me on facebook if you want (link is on channel page) :). Not sure I can help you with books, though, but if you have questions I might be able to answer them.
@dutchforn00bs I've just sent u my invitation(don't know if it's the right name) on facebook. I don't know if I've done that right because I'm not very used to facebook. I've just rushed it in order to ask you some questions...when you see a robsonn, it's me......and thank you really for this work and all the best for u.
dounderdar! lol that's the kind of sounds/words that North Americnas poke fun at because it sounds like dirkiedirkiedirkiedirkie...hahah just joking, it's cute and bouncy sounding.
I've been watching all of your videos and I have been learning German now for 7 years... Ich kann nur sagen, dass Niederländisch wie das deutsche ist. Können Sie mich verstehen? It's actually really similar, and I'm interested in taking up Dutch!
i am brazilian and learn german i am in love with dutch i wanna learn this language, i love ur videos !! wuaaaa !! german is making me understand many other langs i love this <3
I FREAKING LOVE YOU , YOU teached ME how to SPEAK DUTCH in 2 hours (well atleast the basics) , ur incredibly HOT & U make me laugh , got all the reasons to wait for your next videos :D
A very nice video lesson in Dutch. My compliments!
For those that see similarities between the Dutch language and German and Danish: These languages share some roots. Untill the Middle Ages, in parts of North-Western Europe (Germany, the Netherlands incl. Belgium and northern France and parts of Scandinavia) the language 'Diets' was spoken, from which different languages developped. Also, there was intense trade going on between "Hanse" cities in our countries that led to common words.
I 've been to holland,my boyfriend at there,i like to learn dutch from you , ^_^ i like you teaching more about holland ..maybe important person , important place ..
I love your videos! I'm half Dutch, but since I live in America my Dutch has really gone downhill and I've been finding it difficult to speak and understand. Your videos bring back so much for me. Thank you!!
@dutchforn00bs hey do you think you could make a vid on the dutch colours ive looked for it but i cant find a good one your the only vids that are clear! :)
Maandag & zondag are VERY close to the danish mandag & søndag. And "overmorgen" which is the exact same spelling as in danish! We just pronounce it a little more softly. The G is not pronounced for example.
Actually, in Dutch 'middag' means not only lunchtime, but all hours between 12 AM and 6 PM (12.00 - 18.00).
We don't know the difference that the German language knows between 'Vormittag' and 'Nachmittag'.
('namiddag' is used seldomly nowadays: it is a rather old fashioned word in Dutch. To indicate 'late in the afternoon' we say : 'laat in de middag' of 'tegen de avond')
Thank you very much for your videos! I am moving to Amsterdam in less than one month and I didn´t know any word of Duch so I am seeing all your lessons. You are really good as a teacher :)
@dutchforn00bs Thank you!! Of course it helps :) That's more or less what I also figured after watching more of your videos for an hour now ( :-) ) Another question: what's with the weird "reversed" e that I saw in some video? (don't remember which one it was..) And the e with "Umlaut"? Are there more of these letters in Dutch? (I've always loved weird letters..heheh)
@KaterinaScorps the reversed e is a symbol in the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) which is used to express a sound. It doesn't exist in the Dutch alphabet, I just showed it for people who know IPA from studying language at uni or something :)
The ë is used to indicate a syllable border. So, in words like "patiënt" we use it to show it's pronounced "pa-ti-ent" and not "pa-tient". :).
Hi Lidewij, thank you for these videos! :-) I've got a pronunciation question. I noticed your 'r' sounds like the american r..But suddenly there comes vrijdag and turns my theory on the dutch 'r' upside down. xD Is there a rule about where it sounds "american" and where it sounds "german" or is it a matter of language-instinct? I have a guess on it, but I'm waiting for the professionals' tip. ;P
@KaterinaScorps hey :D Not 100% sure, but as far as I know these are the rules:
The American R is never used in the onset of a syllable - the 'onset' being the letters BEFORE the vowel. This means only Rs that occur after the vowel in a syllabe can sound American :) For other Rs I use a back-of-the-mouth R.
This doesn't mean everyone does that - there are also people that use tongue-tip Rs in ALL cases - while I never do. It's a matter of where you come from, I guess :) Hope that helps!
thank u so much for this video! i was in amsterdam during the world cup finally and fell in love with the place and i'm trying to learn dutch on my own.
i speak fluent armenian so the pronunciations aren't too difficult for me
Hello! Good job with these videos, it really help me to learn dutch. Valentine's day it's approaching, can you make a video having this subject? Have a nice day!
@sniperele hahaha, I don't think I'm going to do that! xD several people have actually asked me before.. and although I think it's technically a good idea, it's just too awkward to record something like that.. :D sorry!
@magsantug Not sure quite yet, I'll know in December, I'll have the contact info of my host family then :) I just hope they have rugby near by *crosses fingers*
Thanks for your videos they are very helpful, I was wondering if maybe you could make a video sounding out long and short vowels and maybe explain an easy way to sound out the dutch letter g cause i have problems with that :P lol.
@ashkillsben6 I've already made a video about the long and the short A, and I'll make videos about the other vowels in the future. The G is hard to explain, but I'll try ;D
I have one question, another person on youtube was doing some dutch education like this and said that goedemorgen is good morning. but I always figured from that that morgen meant morning but then in your vid morgen is tomorrow. So I was wondering if you could help me with this. I'd appriciate it bunches!!!
Oh and surprisingly enough I don't have much issue with the G sound at the end of dag. cool huh?!
@dutchforn00bs If you can beleive it English. I live in Indiana U.S. But as I've said before I would love to go there for a few years after school. And thank you very much for the help! :D
i'm South African and speak Afrikaans , its alot like dutch so learning it is pretty easy, although i am struggling to understand when to use het or de before words but ill get there ,
Thanks for your wonderful videos! I'm trying to learn Dutch by myself... it's hard but I like it... An idea for your next videos? Countries of the world and relevant nationalities, together with useful sentences such as (Where are you from or What nationality are you?)... Ciao from Italy!!!
@dutchforn00bs Wow... what a pleasure, an answer from you!!! Well, I like learning foreign languages and I already speak Italian (which is my mother tongue), French, Spanish, Portuguese and English and I decided to learn a new foreign languages, I choose Dutch because 5 years ago I visited both Vlandeeren and the Netherlands and it was an amazing experience!!!! and I enjoy this new challange!!!
I definitely prefer dutch to german now xD Purely because morning and tomorrow are different words, rather than just being "morgen" only one having a capital letter at the start and the other not. It ALWAYS confuses me.
where i was born we had gutteral slag words like gaan which is also a dutch word and words like that its just i dont live there anymore so its been a while since ive used em but im ok with the g

These are great videos! Thanks for them! I just begin to learn Dutch at school. Unfortunately I have a lot of problem with G:) But I try...:)

Thanks for your videos they are very helpful, I was wondering if maybe you could make a video sounding out long and short vowels and maybe explain an easy way to sound out the dutch letter g cause i have problems with that :P lol.
ashkillsben6 1 year ago
@ashkillsben6 I've already made a video about the long and the short A, and I'll make videos about the other vowels in the future. The G is hard to explain, but I'll try ;D

You should have a video when you teach a bit about the dutch culture, and talk about Stroopwafels and Poffertjes and other cool dutch stuffs. :D

I have one question, another person on youtube was doing some dutch education like this and said that goedemorgen is good morning. but I always figured from that that morgen meant morning but then in your vid morgen is tomorrow. So I was wondering if you could help me with this. I'd appriciate it bunches!!!
Oh and surprisingly enough I don't have much issue with the G sound at the end of dag. cool huh?!
SPNDW79 1 year ago
@SPNDW79 "morgen" means both tomorrow and morning :D
Another way of saying 'morning' is 'ochtend' :)
I'm glad the G isn't too hard :D What is your native language? :)
dutchforn00bs 1 year ago
@dutchforn00bs If you can beleive it English. I live in Indiana U.S. But as I've said before I would love to go there for a few years after school. And thank you very much for the help! :D

Thanks for your wonderful videos! I'm trying to learn Dutch by myself... it's hard but I like it... An idea for your next videos? Countries of the world and relevant nationalities, together with useful sentences such as (Where are you from or What nationality are you?)... Ciao from Italy!!!
gianluca7883 2 years ago
Thanks for the suggestion :) It's onnn the list of videos to come now :D
Is there any particular reason you're learning Dutch? :) Or just for fun?
dutchforn00bs 2 years ago
@dutchforn00bs Wow... what a pleasure, an answer from you!!! Well, I like learning foreign languages and I already speak Italian (which is my mother tongue), French, Spanish, Portuguese and English and I decided to learn a new foreign languages, I choose Dutch because 5 years ago I visited both Vlandeeren and the Netherlands and it was an amazing experience!!!! and I enjoy this new challange!!!
gianluca7883 2 years ago
I definitely prefer dutch to german now xD Purely because morning and tomorrow are different words, rather than just being "morgen" only one having a capital letter at the start and the other not. It ALWAYS confuses me.
LorrenFTW 2 years ago
Hahaha, I'm afraid I'm going to disappoint you.. 'morgen' means either tomorrow OR morning, while ochtend just means morning xD
Sorry ;D <3

Also, "I'm liking the lighting and standing up."
