David Lee Roth is the ultimate rock star, he oozes charisma on stage, and love him or hate him there was no one more entertaining live in the early eighties.
Dave's ultimate conspiracy is the illusion that he has musical talent. He really can't sing live, has no range or musical feeling and hides it with pre-staged anicdotes. BUT, he is the absolute master of self-promotion, and has never been recognized for it. He is also an inspiration for tenacity and down right bravery in the face of a terrible career move.
@crnakami For a "man" of 46 years old you sound so erudite and well read, especially your spelling skills. What's the problem, something in my comment that's not true? Why don't you email Mr. Roth and inform him that you're defending his honor, maybe he'll send you $5.
DIAMOND DAVE.... THE BEST FRONTMAN IN ROCK AND ROLL.... JEFF SPICOLI'S CHARACTER IN FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH (1982) WAS A TOTAL COPY OF DIAMOND DAVID LEE ROTH.
They let him in the band, because he had a PA and they figured it would be cheaper to have him in the band, than pay him $10 a night for the rental. Haha! But seriously, he's a fucking cool dude. A true "Rock and Roll Philosopher" who got more pussy than Wilt Chamberlain and Tommy Lee combined!
David Lee Roth was an embarrassment that night. I mean you're the top billing of probably the greatest rock festival since Woodstock and Van Halen sucked. Geez, where's the professional pride. I guess Van Halen were such rock gods by then they didn't care.
@govrom12 -- Where's the professional pride? You sound like you're at a lawyer convention. This is 80's rock music -- and Diamond Dave being drunk off his ass was a big part of the appeal. VH at the '83 US Festival was a show for the ages....they kicked ass.
@iloveshonenknife1 -- Diamond Roth was the ULTIMATE FRONTMAN.......and your faggoty face should be in the sweet spot of one of his reverse helicopter kicks. How you gonna feel with your jaw broken in 5 easy pieces? Don't disrespect Diamond Lee, again.
@Hunkola Dave era Van Halen is the only Van Halen as far as I'm concerned. They recorded music that will never be replicated. That said, David Lee Roth is far from the ultimate frontman. In a nutshell, he sounded like shit live for the most part. Helicopter kicks, assless pants, and goofy hip swings can only get you so far which by 1984 the rest of the band was done with. Ultimate frontman brings to mind people like Bon Scott, Robert Plant, and Roger Daltrey. Still love early VH though.
@ConspiracyGuy1 -- Bon Scott had a nasally voice, and Plant just stood there like a plant. Daltrey was decent. Roth was the ultimate frontman because he gave you maximum entertainment value --- lots of aerial kicks, hilarious jokes ("I'm gonna fuck your girlfriend, pal"), train whistle screams, and cool threads. He was amazing because the crowd was watching him as much as the King of 10 Fingers and 6 Strings. The only other frontman who captivated an audience like that was Freddie Mercury.
@Hunkola Bon Scott may have had a nasally voice, but it was a kick ass-punch to the gut-gutteral scream kind of nasally. Like I said, DLR era VH is the only one for me but along with the kicks, jokes, and clothes, you have to actually have a voice. Dave's, sounded good with the help of the studio magic but he couldn't cut it live. Guess it all comes down to what you look for in a live show.
@ConspiracyGuy1 -- You dont seem to understand the basic concept of a good rock show.......if I wanted to hear a perfect vocal rendition of VH songs, I would stay home and put on my headphones.......I go to a VH concert to be ENTERTAINED, and Dave always delivered hugely on that count.......he was the ULTIMATE SHOWMAN......and Sammy Hagar failed miserably on that job requirement. You seem like the type who enjoys American Idol too much.......quite sad, really.
@Hunkola@Hunkola I've seen VH multiple times with DLR. Not on this pathetic reunion tour, but back in '79 and the early 80's. If flashing lights, jokes, cool clothes, and karate kicks are what you pay to see, so be it. As a musician myself I tend to like to hear good music, vocals included. American Idol doesn't deserve to be mentioned in this thread, but sounds like Dancing With The Stars would be right up your alley.
@ConspiracyGuy1 --- You're in the very small minority who didnt like a Roth-era VH show.......last time I checked, classic VH sold out just about every concert they gave from 1978 to 1984.......and that's not just because Eddie is a great guitarist --- if that was the case, then Joe Satriani and Steve Vai should've sold out stadiums during their solo days and they didnt. Time to face the facts --- Dave is the ultimate frontman and VH fans love him for what he brings to the table.
@Hunkola Apparently you either haven't read or comprehended anything I've said to this point. I never said I didn't like the Roth era shows, hence the fact that I spent hard earned money on them many times. I said Roth is not "the ultimate frontman". I won't waste my breath anymore. Thankyou for your comments Mrs. Roth (Dave's mother)
@Hunkola Ed wrote the ALL of music and Roth did his Vegas act to that music. It worked. But the "frontman" is the bane of the existence of a real talented artist because some jackoff doing karate kicks who can't remember lyrics that he wrote gets paid an equal share. Don't you think Ed had a reason to get sick of that shit? Satch and Vai are great but they don't have 1/10 of the talent and song-crafting ability of Ed, so your comparison is worthless.
@DarthKazi --- You're about as stupid as a box of used condoms......before Roth joined VH, Eddie and Alex had a band called Mammoth and they could barely fill high school dances.......then Dave was hired and suddenly they're filling 3000 seats at Pasadena Civic.......just a coincidence, dummy? Time for a moron like you to realize Diamond Lee was just as important to VH as Eddie was --- maybe even more so for selling the band.
@Hunkola Riiiight. I like early Van Halen and I have no problem with Roth overall, but this idea that he "made the band" is nonsense. If anything, he helped create hair metal, which became a total disaster by the end of the 80's but whatever. Yes, chicks liked him and dudes wanted to be him (mainly to get chicks), but he was not the genius behind the MUSIC of Van Halen. Besides, Warner didn't like him and actually had Sammy on a short list of replacements. How did Roth do after VH?
@DarthKazi --- You're just one of those Hagar morons who lives in denial about the greatness of Diamond Roth. So answer me this......why did Van Hagar albums sell HALF of what the Van Roth catalog did? After all, it's all about Eddie, right? Plus, Van Hagar had the benefit of Top 40 radio and MTV to help sell their records -- something Van Roth only enjoyed with "1984". I will await your genius response, dumbo.
@Hunkola I like both guys for different reasons. I don't like Van Halen because of whatever singer they have in the band at the present time, I like them because I'm a fan of Ed and Al's playing and even Mike's background vocals. "Dance the Night Away" is every bit as cheesy as any Hagar VH song, but it's a classic because it's old.
So, Uncle Rico, strap your balls to the time machine and see if it takes you back to 1982. Lemme know how that turns out, K? K.
@DarthKazi --- So when did Van Halen suddenly become a political band like U2? "Dance the Night Away" is an upbeat song, and most Van Roth songs are about fun and optimism. Now if you wanna talk about cheesy garbage, just look no further than Van Hagar. Read the lyrics to "Spanked" -- "Get your mind blown! Dial 1-900-SPANKED". Wow, some real genius lyrics there. Or read lyrics to "Up for Breakfast" --- "She puts cream in my coffee, cherries on my banana". WOW -- fucking amazing stuff.
@Hunkola OK Keyboard warrior. You win. Your opinion is concrete fact and you win today's "Keyboard Warrior of the Day" contest. I'll send your $.50 check to you for only $3 shipping and handling. Should I make it out to Uncle Rico?
@DarthKazi --- LOL, you're kinda funny but mostly faggy and clueless, dawg........I kinda feel sad for you........as the years tick by, Van Hagar music sounds more and more dated and stupid........and Van Roth music keeps getting played on classic rock stations and attract the younger generation.........but hey --- keep playing "Dreams" on your iPod and let those queer tears flow, brah!
@Hunkola I actually do prefer early Van Halen. In fact, I like Van Halen III more than 5150 and OU812. But again, your opinion is impenetrable like the World Trade Center to an airplane. Good luck with your awesome social skills, "Hunkola"!!
@DarthKazi --- VH III stunk just as bad as OU812, so methinks you're just as retarded as you are faggy and clueless, bub! I bet you think it would be a good idea if Van Halen hired the winner of American Idol instead of having David Lee Roth sing on the new album. Like I said......you just dont get the real meaning of what made Van Halen great.
I wanted to add that Van Halen was boo'ed before they came on stage because they were almost a hour late coming on. People were pissed. I had a blast but you can tell by that interview that David was cocky and it showed in their performance. They were the worst ones of the day (like others on here have said).
agreeeeeed the 80s was full of life and color and rock n roll , metal was at its best. I dont remember any singer crying into there mic back then like they do in todays music.
Precisely, todays music is distorted and I don't understand today's metal at all... I liked the glam scene in the 80;s ,cross dressing and all that interesting stuff. Todays stars look so jaded...
By the time they went on stage he was so cooked he could barely sing...I love VH but it was sad...almost everyone else at Heavy Metal Sunday at the '83 US Festival kicked their @ss. Scorpions, Judas Priest, Triumph, Ozzy, Motley Crue, Quiet Riot...it was sad really...
I was there too, and you're only too right! I wish it weren't so, as this was the only time I saw VH and we left after 3 or 4 songs, it was so bad. Everyone else was great. I particularly remember Scorps, Priest, Ozzy & Triumph sounding excellent. Oh well...
I remember that mv3 host she was from montebello ca and she got it on with david lee roth backstage , the sheirfs department baned van halen from ever perfroming there ever again... that was on great concert!

I heard VH got $1.5 million for this gig
