I think in this review Kai was just making fun of the voigtlander as he took the Leica version of Nokton seriously and went on a night assignment with static shots and rendered the lens soft. Which it is. Bokeh is great but it is soft. Go buy a Panaleica 25mm much better investment and it AF instantly. Nokton is good for videography but than there cheaper options.
Very strange "review". This video clearly shows what this lens is not meant to do. Horses for courses. It really illustrates the presenter's amateur skills as a photographer and critic. He tries to prove a point about the softness at 07:56 by taking a photo through a plastic visor, claiming that the lens is soft. That visor certainly is soft. At a such short distance to subject he really should use a proper viewfinder or a rear screen loupe: the critically sharp depth of field is very narrow.
Only a moron would use a wideapertured and manual focussing lens to shoot fast action sports indoors!
Kai doesn't know the basics of photography and evidently doesn't know to choose the right equipment for the right occasion / assignement. This is part of a photographers jo, you know. He is more in love with himself than doing a good job here. Go and shoot something where shallow depth of field would be useful instead.
@MalaikaToo Its called a test, only a moron doesnt understand the definition of testing something to its limit. Kai is known for taking his cameras to strange extremes.
This is one of the few reviews by digitalrev tv that I did not like . I think Maybe this lens should be reviewd like the Leica Noctilux f/0.95 was. Different light conditions and NIGHT SHOTS would be way better than this fight club thing. Should I buy the "Kai forgot the battery" story?
Worry not, you guys are still the best! Top Shutter.
Let's blame Alamby....... No way. Alamby is the one you want living in your house, not the models you guys have to pay to appear on video. Her eye-rolling and expressions of tolerance for dumb guys is so endearing.
It's a large aperture, but, since it has a small sensor and short focal length, it doesn't seem to have super shallow depth of field unless you're super close to the subject.
how about the nokton 25 compared to the 50 0.95 for leica m? in my opinion a voigtländer lens on a micro 4/3 is like putting racing tires on a tricycle for children. it surely fits, but doesn't make sense.
@schlurplekkk I sorta disagree for 1 reason video/film -> as opposed to photography of which I agree with your point- For video people this lens is a really nice pair with AG AF100 or if you are poor like me the Lumix GH2 -allowing the film community access to film like shallow depth of field which can, if you know what you are doing step your game up in the video/film world big time. My 20mm f 1.7 does amazing things for the HD1080p video I shoot,
Kai seemed to enjoy exercising his fingers on the focus ring and giving it a few extra spins in front of the camera.. perhaps stop rolling on the floor and a few decent shots could be had.
@ajkran2. Thanks for the info I understand what your saying why not get a non brand or have one made, I had a nice leather one made with extra padding works great and looks better than using a Nikon strap with a Canon but that's his choice.
i think it's a shame that you guys tested the sharpness through a layer of plastic. one could hold a paper bag in front of a lens, and it would make as much sense. please re-test this lens in a proper way without shooting through plastic.
Simple reason for the excitement over this lens: Video. Everyone with a Panasonic AF100 will wind up owing this. AF is irrelevant, and sharpness doesn't much matter at 1080P.
Agreed. They really should evaluate lenses like this for video use too. Aside from the beatiful fast aperture, this lens has also very fine features for videography like long and smooth focus throw and ZERO breathing. But then again, looking at Digital Rev's videography, I see why they aren't interested in things like that...
I'm wondering, why did you guys use a lens of that calibur on a EP-1. I guess time was limited or something. I think this calls for another review of this lens for its true purpose on a real camera.
This review was fun but I agree with others here, it would be great to see this lens on a GH2 or G3 with some video tests (Lok's opinion would be good!). Also, low light photos with this lens, it should be really great.
Digital Rev... im a big fan, but this review was lame... and i had to dislike. The first part with the 'ohh we forgot the battery...' was lame, and to use a manual lens on an EP1 for low light action shots... was silly, just dosent make sence, and it harms your credabilty. Just keep it simple, like your old videos, and have some common sense, we all love your sense of humor.
Haha I think Kai is really funny XD I mean, I'm not interested in buying everything they post videos about, but I do watch them cuz everyone is really fun to watch! lol
good we got the Nokton review.. everyone knows Canon cant focus at all.. I wonder if the 7D got rid of that bug? cause the 5d mark II and the Eos 1D mark were pretty much screwed up in that regard.
Also, check out some of his first appearances on the channel and how mellow he acts, and see if there's a correlation between that and how many views the videos get... :) It's really just marketing at the end; Digital Rev.com is giving its salesmen a personality and a purpose.
This is the first review I can't say I liked. It just doesn't make sense to review this lens with action photography. It's like trying to see how well a screwdriver will hammer some nails. Still life, portraiture, or scenery in low light (indoors, night, or both) would have been a more useful review. This really seems like a lens for a more contemplative kind of shooting.
@DWRZ However I do believe its because they didnt have a battery for the canon which is why they resorted to reviewing the nokton anyway if not we wouldn't even have a video!
@DWRZ it was Lok's camera, the opening is showing that they were going to review the 1d mkiv, so they already had the boxing event set up, but yeah, i agree
@DWRZ I agree with DWRZ - this lens is no doubt a studio and still life lens; with 17cm close focusing, a blowout the bokeh, millimeter depth of field capabilities. No manual lens on a m4/3 is meant to be a sports / action lens, IMO.
