  • You might want to use a Big Fat Gold chain for it. Nice.

  • I found your videos when a friend recommended I look into using purple heart (I use antlers, and one is a bit purple!) and I have a question about the sanding you did. What grit is it and what is in that can that you are dabbing the sand paper into?

  • It is 10 parts paste wax and 1 part mineral that I dip the sand paper in.

    Thanks,

    Carl

  • @haydenHD Can you explain that to me in a little more detail, please?

  • Carl, do you find that a cylindrical tool rest gives you less tool catches than the flat surface styles? I hate my tool rest!

  • Hi Guy,

Yes, I like the round one better. I still need the flat one though to get into some tight spots. Sorry, I have not called you back. I have been swamped and I will try to reach you this weekend and we cannot talk about a run to the beach for wood.

    Thanks,

    Carl

  • Carl,

Thanks for doing the purpleheart video. I was having some trouble with my first purpleheart project and seeing how you handle it (and how it behaved while you worked it) really helped!

  • Super, super dangerous using a hacksaw on a spinning lathe, if that blade snaps you could lose an eye , finger or have a a serious laceration, I would recommend all viewers DO NOT USE THIS METHOD!!!!, that is what parting tools are for.

  • I have used this method for 8+ years & the same saw blade. I started using this method when I made a box & didn't want to sacrificy any wood. I have never had it catch, I simply place the blade on & apply light pressure & slowly move back & forth so as not over heat. I do use a parting tool as well, but with releaf cuts, it takes out alot of material & sometimes I don't want to waste the material. If there is anything in the video you are not comfortable with, please do not attempt it. Carl

  • hey Carl hows it going

lovely little project its great to see the jig being used again

    take care

    Robbie

  • Thanks Robbie,

Yes it's a handy little jig.

    Take care,

    Carl

  • Lovely work! That's a great tip about the pencil lines because I was trying to cut a pendant on a sliding chuck and couldn't see it so made a real mess. I'll make a jig like yours because the time invested would be quickly saved.

    Best Wishes, Brendan.

  • Thanks Brendan, the pencil lines are a life saver you can barely see the piece with out them.

    Take care,

    Carl

  • Good job, some men and woman, I no, would like that. Thank you for a good video

  • Thank you,

  • As always, nice work. I like the jig you made to turn the pendant. I'm still learning what the different tools are used for so thanks telling us which ones you use. Also how to use them. I need that.

    Tom

  • Thanks Tom, I trying to remember but some times forget.

  • Brilliant yet again Carl, thanks for the inspiration. Have you made a video on how to make the jig used in the video?

    Cheers, Andy.

  • Thanks Andy, yes I did a video on making the jig I will add it as a video response to this one.

  • what do you finish that with?

we use superglue for a finish so it keeps its purple color.

oil or urethane finishes turn it brown. at least it use to do it that way anyway.

  • I used salad bowl oil to finish it.

  • Thats pretty cool Carl.

  • Thanks Leonard,

  • Nice project Carl, doesnt purple heart darken to a deeper purple with time?? i have 2 bowl blanks in it, you may have inspired me to a project this weekend. thanks for the vids James

  • Yes it will darken depending on the light.

    Thanks,

    Carl

  • simple yet very nice. This is the kind of project I like. Great job Carl.

  • this is not heart shapped.
