I'm an american fight fan and I use to underrate european fighters. But, after seeing Calzaghe whup Lacy I stopped doing that realizing of course that some European fighters have skills.

Lacy never could box. People in boxing gyms would always talk about how he did everything with one punch (left hook) and no jab or defense and would fatigue easily. Calzaghe, on the other hand, can box, hand speed, and underrated defense. I never had Lacy winning this fight or against any other top "boxer." 9 out of 10 times the boxer will beat the brawler. Doesn't matter what country they call home.
Lacy was an overhyped ring bully, if this wasn't clear before this match his post-Calzaghe career certaintly proved it.
Calzaghe was a good fighter, impressive handspeed, good timing, great stamina (although not much of a punch), but too long overprotected by Frank Warren. Only towards the end of the career did he make a couple of really signfiicant fights (Kessler, Hopkins). Too little too late to make to the first row of legends.

Calzaghe was talented but a natural duck. He didn't want to get in the ring here against hype job Lacy. He avoided prime Roy and lost to past it Hopkins.
Joe Calzaghe is a typical example of a boxer who has been protected through careful management in what must be one of the weakest divisions in boxing's history. Calzaghe's "reign" consists of 21 title defenses in a division and at a time where Sven Ottke made the same achievement.
Hopefully boxing can pick itself up with fewer WBO-like titles and less Calzaghe-like management where the best fight the best.

I'm a huge boxing fan, and have tried to watch pretty much every classic boxing match and every fight of all the top fighters from the turn of the 20th century, but two of the fights I always come back to are this one and Calzaghe v Jones. They're just such brilliant boxing displays and Calzaghe is the consumate entertainer.
Calzaghe was the underdog going in to this, even with British odds makers, first they hated Joe because they didn't know who he was, then they hated him because he proved to be P4P, now they hate him because he retired on top, 46-0. He should come back and fight 3 bums just to piss the haters off lol.

his speed stands out because he's pretty big. He's like an oversized little guy, sometimes he reminds me of manny pacquiao. I've seen videos of him training by running up hills with weights on his back. If that doesn't sound tough to you go try it.
calzaghe's underrated I think by the general public. Boxrec, which I think is pretty good, ranks him higher all time than almost all modern boxers. You can see he really is amazingly fast especially with his timing.
this is a good fight. you can hear how excited the crowd is. Even Calzaghe thought he was going to lose this fight. He said his trainers had to convince him not to pull out during training.

Boxing has a long history of corruption and idiocy when it comes to judges. It's the reason Sven Ottke went undefeated in his career.
Historically, black fighters have dominated boxing. There are a couple exceptions. 99% of the GOAT memorable fighters that have existed, either black or latino. Very few asians, very few whities.

Make it a point, rewind if you have to whenever there's an exchange, watch it in slow mo. There are points where he lands 4 punches in a single clinch.
At the end of the round, Compubox has him throwing 6 and landing 4 total. Complete inaccuracy. It's not arguable, I can demonstrate the point if you'd really like.

@badguybully both joe and floyd fought several fighters of significance and worth and won; they're both excellent BOXERS, floyd just bores most people, at least Joe was exciting
@badguybully Hopkins chickened out of a fight arranged with Joe when younger. Poor thing knew the risk outweighed the gain. Since Joe retired there have been at least 2 world champs he beat (Hopkins, Kessler) and at least another 2 (Froch, Braehmer) beaten by his victims. There was simply noone good enough for him. The supreme Super Middleweight, he was also the best Light Heavy when he retired, as shown by Hopkins now being champ at that weight 3 years after Joe beat him in his own country.
One of my all time favorite fights.

Lacy never could box. People in boxing gyms would always talk about how he did everything with one punch (left hook) and no jab or defense and would fatigue easily. Calzaghe, on the other hand, can box, hand speed, and underrated defense. I never had Lacy winning this fight or against any other top "boxer." 9 out of 10 times the boxer will beat the brawler. Doesn't matter what country they call home.

Lacy was an overhyped ring bully, if this wasn't clear before this match his post-Calzaghe career certaintly proved it.
Calzaghe was a good fighter, impressive handspeed, good timing, great stamina (although not much of a punch), but too long overprotected by Frank Warren. Only towards the end of the career did he make a couple of really signfiicant fights (Kessler, Hopkins). Too little too late to make to the first row of legends.

Joe Calzaghe is a typical example of a boxer who has been protected through careful management in what must be one of the weakest divisions in boxing's history. Calzaghe's "reign" consists of 21 title defenses in a division and at a time where Sven Ottke made the same achievement.
Hopefully boxing can pick itself up with fewer WBO-like titles and less Calzaghe-like management where the best fight the best.

I'm a huge boxing fan, and have tried to watch pretty much every classic boxing match and every fight of all the top fighters from the turn of the 20th century, but two of the fights I always come back to are this one and Calzaghe v Jones. Boxing fans don't recognize WBO titles as they have historically never been the true champions.

Hopkins was already the undisputed champ before then because WBO doesn't matter

There were 6 rounds where Hopkins landed the clean, hard, effective shots, whereas Calzaghe threw slap flurries that missed, had no impact when they landed, and did no damage.
If all you're going to do is count ANY time that a person's glove touches the opponent, whether it be on the elbows or gloves or body or head, and count that as an effective strike, you know nothing about boxing.

Make it a point, rewind if you have to whenever there's an exchange, watch it in slow mo. There are points where he lands 4 punches in a single clinch.

@badguybully Hopkins chickened out of a fight arranged with Joe when younger. Poor thing knew the risk outweighed the gain. Since Joe retired there have been at least 2 world champs he beat (Hopkins, Kessler) and at least another 2 (Froch, Braehmer) beaten by his victims. There was simply noone good enough for him. The supreme Super Middleweight, he was also the best Light Heavy when he retired, as shown by Hopkins now being champ at that weight 3 years after Joe beat him in his own country.
