I produced and directed this with Ani. This thread is fairly uninformed. The lipstick was chosen for its metallic color. WTF? The dressed up soulsinger in a dive was a METAPHOR for showing up Joyful for you fans no matter what she is going through. It is off More Joy Less Shame EP of Joyful Girl remixes PERFORMED AND PRODUCED BY ANI - This was around the Dilate era. She co-directed it with me. She definitely didn't write it to start arguments ;)
@whalefin1 -- straight-gendered lipstick? Are you serious? That is one of the most ignorant posts I've seen on youtube and I've seen a lot. Just because a woman puts on a dress and lipstick doesn't make her any less a progessive feminist. Are you next going to insult Ani for having heterosexual sex and making a beautiful baby girl?
You obviously have a really freakin' warped idea of what it means to be a feminist. Grow up!

Yes, I have followed her since the begining of time. Ani did, in fact, write this song! It's not a cover! It is however a remake of her own song, which she does often, from town to town, even on the same tour. You can get many variations depending on her mood at the moment, and the climate of the crowd, for whom she is performing. She is extremely versatile! If you don't believe me, purchase some of her albums, and you'll be suprized by the subtle or in your face changes she makes between albums
In my opinion, and despite the the tune's quality - quite good as far as i'm concerned - she's giving her primordial feminist/LGBT engagements for sale...that's sad.
Once an icon of feminism struggle, but here only wearing straight-gendered lisptick and eye-painting, on a pale cover. Ani, wake up, please.

@kissmusiclover are you serious? Ani DiFranco released this song is 1996. This is a remix she did later on of her own song.
