I have a German Shepherd dog and he responds very well to any direction I point him in. He even knows the difference between my right and left hand. He knows how to shake hands using his left or right paw depending on which hand I extend to him. He responds just as well to hand signals as he does a verbal command. He's very smart. I've recently got a white German puppy and she is learning from him. I'm very impressed with how smart German shepherds are.

We as adults know that the direction of the tip of the finger in relation to the base indicates the direction of indication. They just see an indicated direction with a partially or fully extended limb. Technically they're not wrong, but they're not quite high enough yet.
