I was at this concert with back stage passes - they are so nice in person, so kind and humble to their fans. What a blast we had - course didn't want it to ever end. Yes, they were recognized in Asia, they did tour after tour in Japan, were on Japanese television with multiple interviews, etc. Steve DID writet their songs-the ones that became famous-look at the album credits. Faithfully was Jon Cain's alone, but almost every other song Steve wrote with either Schon, or Cain, and some, like Lovin, Touchin, Squeezin, Walk Like a Lady, The Party's Over, he wrote alone. Eclipse has bombed as an album...
@gluchnurse Now, I respect Arnel immensely, and I don't begrudge the others still wanting to make music. And they probably have to tour because of multiple divorces, reported bad investments, etc. But a nostalgia tour with Foreigner, where the majority of the playlist is the songs from the Perry era because that is what people come to hear, is not making them as 'famous' as they were with Steve, or as successful. If they played only the Revelation/Eclipse NEW music, no one would come.
@gluchnurse I knew someone would say that. Yes they had a concert in japan, but that was in japan only, unlike with Arnel they're touring all over the Asia, so basically they're bigger now than they were before.
@cuwer15 Don't get me wrong, I think Arnel is a great talent & seems to be one heck of a decent human being as well. Clearly they have been able to open new markets with Arnel as the front man in Asia, & that is great. But the CD's aren't charting like they were before. Revelation seems to be a fluke due to the two CD set of mostly legacy tunes & the novelty of Arnel when he first came, but Eclipse is tanking on the major charts, & they are doing combo nostalgia tours versus being sole headliner

After Steve left them for ten years, he went back and made the song "when you love a woman", after that he needed a hip replacement and he wanted the band to wait for him again? @Tomifukitoji The 2 singers are distinctly different in tone, soul, emotion and power. Many people prefer the Steve Perry Journey as Steve had a certain magic that all the other singers somehow lack, even though they are good vocalists. Also, it was Steve who gave Journey that 'unique sound' that all other singers, including Arnel work to immulate.

@cuwer15 This version definitely does not suck nor is it tuned down. Anyone familiar with the Steve Perry Journey would know this is exactly how it is supposed to be sung. You certainly can love Arnel's version more, Arnel does a fine job with it (when he is not having the audience sing the high part for him). However, it was Perry's version that is played on the radio for the past 30 years. And it is Perry's version that has the magic soul in it that only he can do.

By the way, Steve is fantastic in this video. He sounds almost exactly like the record! You can tell at 3:58 that his voice isn't going to take him all the way and he brings it down a notch. Doesn't matter though, it's FLAWLESS! I think generally this song was put at the end of the set or was an encore. Of course his voice was not going to be like it is at the beginning of the show. He always gave 150%.
I love Steve Perry more than anything, been a fan for 30+ years. I have only seen Arnel on TV and he seems energetic and talented. He will never be Steve and I don't suspect he is trying to. Of course he sounds a lot like Steve Perry but that's the Journey sound. What's the alternative? Hire someone who can't sing their body of work in a live environment? Not an option. Faithfully was Jon Cain's alone, but almost every other song Steve wrote with either Schon, or Cain, and some, like Lovin, Touchin, Squeezin, Walk Like a Lady, The Party's Over, he wrote alone. Eclipse has bombed as an album...

@gluchnurse Now, I respect Arnel immensely, and I don't begrudge the others still wanting to make music. And they probably have to tour because of multiple divorces, reported bad investments, etc. But a nostalgia tour with Foreigner, where the majority of the playlist is the songs from the Perry era because that is what people come to hear, is not making them as 'famous' as they were with Steve, or as successful. If they played only the Revelation/Eclipse NEW music, no one would come.

Clearly they have been able to open new markets with Arnel as the front man in Asia, & that is great. But the CD's aren't charting like they were before. Revelation seems to be a fluke due to the two CD set of mostly legacy tunes & the novelty of Arnel when he first came, but Eclipse is tanking on the major charts, & they are doing combo nostalgia tours versus being sole headliner

After Steve left them for ten years, he went back and made the song "when you love a woman", after that he needed a hip replacement and he wanted the band to wait for him again? He must be out of his mind, he's a fucking selfish to think the band would do that. So they replaced him to prove they can go without him, and they were right.

Many people prefer the Steve Perry Journey as Steve had a certain magic that all the other singers somehow lack, even though they are good vocalists. Also, it was Steve who gave Journey that 'unique sound' that all other singers, including Arnel work to immulate.

You certainly can love Arnel's version more, Arnel does a fine job with it (when he is not having the audience sing the high part for him). However, it was Perry's version that is played on the radio for the past 30 years. And it is Perry's version that has the magic soul in it that only he can do.

I'd rather listen to SP on a bad day than any one else on their best. When I die and hear the agels' choir it will sound like SP. Vocal performance, improvisation, emotion; he was always spot on. By the way, Steve is fantastic in this video. He sounds almost exactly like the record! You can tell at 3:58 that his voice isn't going to take him all the way and he brings it down a notch. Doesn't matter though, it's FLAWLESS! I think generally this song was put at the end of the set or was an encore. Of course his voice was not going to be like it is at the beginning of the show. He always gave 150%.

I love Steve Perry more than anything, been a fan for 30+ years. I have only seen Arnel on TV and he seems energetic and talented. He will never be Steve and I don't suspect he is trying to. Of course he sounds a lot like Steve Perry but that's the Journey sound. What's the alternative? Hire someone who can't sing their body of work in a live environment? Not an option. So choose to listen or not, but stop bitching about it! I choose to listen to Journey circa 1977-82 only.
