I think the point about "angry isolation" is particularly fascinating. The idea that a billion people were isolated in a country, while being brainwashed into extreme hatred for the United States, had to be quite disconcerting to say the least. Though the Chinese were in shambles at the time, it was only a matter of time before they would rise again. Nixon didn't want them to be angry at the U.S. when they wake up.
