Iceland was a autonomous part of Denmark from 1918, occupied by the british in 1940 and later by the americans. And in 1944 became independent with US troops in Iceland guaranteeing her independence. Good deal for the USA aswell, as they could then onwards keep the north atlantic a very dangerous place for Soviet submarines in the event that the cold war went hot.
