@13blanket no, she's not. she was a great consistent player but that's it. she had her chances against the great ones but never took them. She was never the one who got the big w against them in the crucial moments & tournaments. The max she could do was to defeat the big ones at this kind of tourneys. In the Grand Slams she used to get trashed by them, including Sharapova. That being why she never won any Slam and never even reached a final after 04. Gold Medal in Beijing was consolation prize

@xx360 I would hardly call a gold medal a "consolation prize". I agree with you to a point. She is kind of like the Andy Roddick of the womens game. She was as you said very consistent. And honestly I believe that had her serve not been so messed up, she would have won a major. She could however hold her own against the big players but she just never got that umph I guess for a lack of a better word, to really hold on.

@idol1234100 she was in finalist in grand slams but sadly no winner but a very great player indeed, you really really miss such very taleted stars like this when they are gone, but she is still very young and she is retired but it might be to do with some injuries or something, maybe she'll come back, would be great to see her playing again but all the best to her though

Sharapova really needs to correct her wind game. Think of the worst looking matches she's played they've all been windy. 2007 US Open 3rd-Radwanska, wind was really, really screwing with her serve, same thing in 2009 US 3rd Round. This match you can see the wind carrying away the balls, and when Sharapova isnt a good mover to begin with...it can really mess her up, especialy her high toss. Anyway thats just my personal theory.

dementieva too played 5 matches in 5 days. almost every tournament it's like that

yeah but the difference was that maria just finished her match the other night before the Final against Kleybanova that was a three-setter and Maria was forced to come from behind to beat Kleybanova 6-4 in the third..!Their match finished late at night..!So maria was really tired here..she had to wake up in 12 in the morning to play the Final..While Dementieva had a fresh night and rested well..!

I dont think ive ever seen Dementieva play so ferociously, i guess sharapova's power and grunt are contagious :) Dementieva is going to win her first major in 2010, I know it!!!
