Choice... either storm the beaches, (which had worked many times prior to that landing, by the way) try to go around the guns (north coast of France had gun emplacements every mile or so on any areas we could land on) or find some other way... and we'd have to hurry because the Soviets were just 12 months from demolishing the Nazi's and taking ALL of Europe.

There are indeed many hundereds of miles of French coastline, but most of it is way too far away for it to have been any use. Take the South of France... lots and lots of those beaches, but over 1,000 miles (by sea) from any significant staging area. (you need a lot of prepared areas and ease of supplying for that kind of thing) So, that's a huge chunk that's unusable for the D-Day landings.

The West coast? Again, way too far for any invasion, since they had to get into position overnight and such a huge fleet wouldn't have got there in time. In addition, the u-boat bases were on that coast, so the fleet would have been massacred before they could land any troops.

Another reason for using the north coast? Because the fighters from the UK could actually reach it with enough fuel to fight for a while.

The only choices were Normandy or Calais, and Calais would have been a bloodbath.

Good greif... the invasion was slated for the 5th but weather was too bad to invade. Normandy was the furthest away from the UK coast they could manage an invasion. It was a freaking 120 mile long front! How the hell would 1/2 a mile eaither side make any flaming difference?? Normady was one of the least defended parts of France... the only other option that could have been feasibly taken was the Calais area, which was so heavily defended it made Normady look deserted.

Adjust your fire to new coordinates and fire again until you hit the defenses.Then..... you send in the troops at a halfway distance from the beaches as the Navy is firing on fixed co-ordinates. Then firing stops...No deaths by friendly fire!

One more thing the tanks failed to reach the beaches as their special floating equipment failed.

You don't get it... the troops were almost at the beach when the first bombardment ended... not the salvo, that isn't how they did it. You take aim, then fire a ton of shells... anything up to a hour or more of firing.

When it's done, if there is time, you have to get some kind of recon. (High-flying plane taking pictures which had to be returned to ground for development usually, low-flying would be too risky) Then, if you can try again, you have to co-ordinate with all the ships taking part..

The only other option was high altitude... and they wouldn't have been able to make out anything! Learn what they could do, or be ignorant.

Not quite... it was also a serious attempt to try to gain intelligence and also do serious damage to the port.

It was intended as a "land, gather, retreat" operation... unfortunately just about everything that could go wrong, did.

The only real defense for that landing was that they did gain experience of what was required for an invasion by sea, and they did do serious damage to the port... was it worth it? Well, it very likely saved a lot more lives at Normandy/Sicily/Italy than were lost.

5 mins before the assault wave hit the beaches, the ships were in the middle of the first bombardment wave... they wanted to give as little warning as possible to the defenders, such that they hoped they would still be scrambling for their guns as the craft arrived.

At what point do you get info, re-aim, and fire again in the few minutes left to you... and accurate enough to not kill your own men?
