wow its really nice to know how to become an electrician...32 years ago lol. to say times have changed is an understatement. i had to compete for one of 16 seats out of 80 applicants by taking an entrance exam and interview. that got me into first year which i had to get 70% or better before starting work as a pre-apprentice. but i made it!
I've been an Electrician for over 39 years, starting with my electrical apprenticeship in 1970. For anyone interested it's a great field and something that's going to be here no matter what. We see a lot of College emphasis for careers, but that's not for everyone and it's been a great path for myself and my family. I wouldn't change a thing about my choice so many years ago.
hey im 17 years old and just got my GED and starting at ivy tech community college january 11th, do you have any advice on what my next step should be? im looking into getting my IEC (industrial Electrician Certificate) and I would love to become and electrician. How could i become a legal electrician? please comment back or send me a message. it would be greatly appreciated.
First step to getting into the trade is to locate the closest IBEW local in your area. Give them a call and let them know that you're interested in becoming an apprentice electrician. They should be able to let you know all the prerequisites and you take it from there. Good luck.
i was thinking about going to school for this trade... how long would i have to go? is it recession proof? i speak numerous languages will that help me?
@Tainowarrior203; Tain' most apprenticeships are four to five years in length. Like most things though you get out what you put in. Pay attention, do your assignments and you'll learn enough to get you started. After 40 years in the Profession I'm still taking classes and keeping up to date on what's new.
As far as I've determined nothing is recession-proof, but one things for sure you can't be replaced by a machine and if they can't ship your job overseas. Good luck, Dan Magyar

its very difficult to get work experience these days for newly qualified electricians such as myself, but it would make a very good career.
