  • Sounds like me haha

  • For those of you who criticize Asian parents, you would be dying of happiness if your daughter - or you yourself - was half as accomplished and eloquent as Emily.

  • Asians don't play video games.....we make them. How's that for kick-ass?

  • @acumen321 im chinese, i play shooting games like a pro

  • that prove minority chinese in malaysia and indonesia contribute more gdp than malay

  • @Davincciable my gf is malaysian chinese and they work a lot more, the gov gives malays a free ride..

  • What an idiot asking an Asian if they play videos games.

  • My mother is a tiger mom.. but if she wasnt. How will I learn to fear/respect my parents? She was also affectionate so she wasnt just strict with no reward. She would reward me treats ^.^

  • @chocomocha better that than parents who don't give a shit..

  • I wished my mum was a bit more strict with my education. She was a hard working mother and still is. Not all asian mother are tough, Chinese people can just naturally be smart.

  • How about you save all this until your about 50, and THEN tell us how great your life has been as a result of the parenting.

  • I believe that the title of this video is very misleading. Emily Luk is NOT a "Tiger Daughter." Emily described early in the video that she was raised to be both Chinese and N. American. She is a product of a fine balance of the two styles where her parents stressed on building her "foundation" as well as left room for her to reflect on whether or not she really wanted to play the piano 9:30 . 2:06 She was also encouraged by her mother to pursue her interests, something unthinkable for "TigerMom

  • @krprunitennis I guess they just picked any random Chinese person they found.

  • It does not matter how successful you are. Human can synthesis their own happiness. If admiration from society's eye is what you seek, then by all means spend your time under constant stress achieving it.

  • youngbiz11 i wish that you would shut up and stop complaining that your mother wasn't good enough for you the girl in this interview looks like she is depressed boring and anti social but i digress the fact remains that just because you mom wasn't hard on you doesn't mean she didn't raise you to be a morally good and independent person so no rice or kfc for you bad!!

  • @toxickinkerspit How is she depressed, boring and anti-social? She has tons of school activities and she seems every bright and articulate.

  • hello im a16 year old mixed chinese and black. i wish my mom raised me the tiger way.i think this because i play soccer and i am looking to go semi canadian pro (cls) i started playing when i was 13. i just think what if i started when i was younger say 3 or 4 how good would i be. i must thank all tiger moms who raise their kids the old (fashion) way. and who did not give to other coltures because of what people think. i stilll love my mom i just think she was to soft on me.but i still love her

  • I'm glad Emily did not give him the answers he wanted. The questions were structured to get her to fall into the persona that Chinese moms are crazy and harsh. Thanks Emily.

  • It is interesting that the choice was between North American or Chinese?

    Isn't Canada a country?

  • @woodensurfer Canada is in the North America hemishpere. I believe that is what them mean.

  • "I thought my mum was tough" LOL

  • Why all Chinese/Hongkongers have American names???

  • @KatiushaVN4 what do you expect our names to be ....ching lee?

  • ...the fuck...i know this girl....

  • not a "tiger daughter"

  • I love Emily.

  • She says 'a)' alot but doesn't move on to 'b)'.

LOL. Just made a crappy pun.

  • 10 people don't have tiger moms!

  • Here's the dilemma. Asians raise the bar and more Whites copy and achieve similar results. Or Asians will slowly edge out Whites. Will Asians push the bar higher to stay ahead? Already east Asians commit suicide more than Whites due to strict upbringing. In addition, races differ. Facts show Asians have a median IQ of 105 compared to 100 Whites. The disparities will only increase with Asian immigration.

  • @sgmpmr

more whites are dying because of violence, drugs, alcohol etc...

  • Comment removed

  • The Chinese are the master race. All other Asians follow close behind.

  • Comment removed

  • @aa3gunner your 'master race' includes Japanese and Koreans. Don't get over yourself, they share the same high iq traits and genetics as you.

  • i like how he emphasizes the word "northamerican"

  • Amy Chua is raising daughters that will land the ideal MRS degree.

These girls will find marriage a difficult prospect and will have to work instead of landing their dream doctor husband.

  • @feministsAreCorrupt lol that's SOOO Asian. I'm an Asian guy and I know like 90% of all Asian girls only want to marry doctors.

  • @guitarhamster102 It's just upper class. Upper class girls have NO intention of working. Why should they when they have a trust fund for shopping?

  • holy fuck this girl is a fucking beast, exile in both mental and physical, yanks got no chance to have someone this level and so young.

  • she hot.

  • Yay for DECA (=

  • @tiengallavant - and I agree with you. What I hate is everyone painting Amy Chua as a mother from Hell. I would copy her method if I had my own children so they can be successful because the benefit outweighs the negative when we dont do it. I know because I am NOT a product of so called "Chinese Parenting"..and it had a negative effect with my family and siblings. And yes Amy Chua's book was a memoir a gourney of her realizing. The media is saying it is an attack to the western parenting..

  • When I was little my mom would sit down and help me with homework and study for weekly tests every night. She was incredibly scary and would even whack my left wrist (left handed) every single time I made a mistake on my math homework, this eventually led to a blue colored bruise. In the end I did show results. I was doing better in school than I ever did. Now a days my mom has no time for that and I truly miss it. It may have been scary and literally full of pain but it brought results.

  • This is what a tiger parents produce, GOOD FOR HER. She said close to the end of the video that she actually appreciated what her parents did for her now with all the structures and disciplines they instilled in her. SO FUCk all of you Amy Chua haters...

  • @misshoneyz2dabify fuckin chinese commie fascists.

  • woot EDMONTON

  • As a Tiger Son, I can tell you that my Tiger Mother is living alone with a tiger striped kitty because she ended up alientating all 4 of her children and we wanted as little to do with her as possible.

  • @PungiFungi how could you?! dont you know a thing about fillial piety? i have a super-tiger-mother and i love her so much and always forgive her for ALL the horrible thing she does... how could anyone leave their mother alone? if i were her i'd be SOOOO sad! she DID give birth to you after 9 months of lugging you around in her stomach and did dedicate so much of her time and MONEY and passion and effort and all that stuff. your so meaaaannnn D: ..... meaaannnniiieeee D:<

  • @drummerxkun , let's say it is one thing if you are a kid but she kept her Tiger Mom routine even now when we are in our mid 30s and early 40s. There is a time you quit being a Tiger Mom and simply being a Mom. She learned it too late.

  • O.o This girl has so many similarities to me, in just the first thirty seconds of the video. I'm creeped out.

  • She goes to my brothers school

  • I think there's something wrong with this guy. He's so surprised when she answers things like "Yea, I've played most game consoles." , etc. My parents are totally strict, but they don't follow every single "Amy Chua" rule.

  • This is funny... he keeps trying to catch her out to admit she has a tiger mom, whilst she is very careful to paint the opposite picture.

  • When I was 17 I wish I had my shit together the way this girl has.

  • i like how they say 'about'

    haha.. 'aboot'

  • you don't find many 17 yro like her in today's world

  • Yeah, let's paint a ugly picture of Chinese moms then we will feel better for our own failure.

    .....pathetic!

She said that her book is not a parenting guild line, it's just her story, she doesn't think she is the ideal mother, so relax.

I am Chinese and I think Western moms are way better, they raise garbages that cannot take our jobs.

It's true that white kids have more life than Asian, they get 8-10 hours every day because the don't have to work.

  • @leoachilles - totally agree with you haha

  • WOOT FOR HONG KONG!

  • "There is nothing as blissfully wonderful as an educated fool." My mom told me that one and never went to an Ivy League college, but she was very strict. there is something to say about discipline, but more to thank for those parents who are street wise AND educated.

  • Emily u look scary

  • This interviewer is trying to push the girl into exaggerating her experiences. There are levels of strict asian parenting!! Stop trying to make it seem like all asian parents are like Amy Chua. Sheez.

  • @misshoneyz2dabify She couldnt tell us if she did because she still a minor her, they will go down in to the basement and beat her if she did. Wait til he kids come of age, then see what they tell the reports about mommy when they are free from the concentration camp they live in.

  • Ya, I will wait for the followup when she does penthouse or playboy lol. That will teach mommy that being too overbearing usually has its consequences!

  • She doesn't need great grades. She's hot.

  • @drakezen ya, my words exactly, ill wait for the followup in playboy. that will teach mommy dearest lol.

  • I like her a lot. She looks like a promising young lady with expressive elegance.

  • i found her on facebook! =O

  • and she plays videogames too waaa? and lives in Canada, wooow, I'm stunned.

  • I'm so jealous, she's so lovely and successful and well rounded!

  • oh man, she's so pretty, and elegant.

  • her hair is so not beautiful!

  • @maicongphuc stfu, most u can do in ur life is suck some cocks, please some men with u pussy in the future, thats what ur life is worth. she on the other hand could be a very important person in the world.

  • @udlock9 what do you know about me to say that i should go suck cocks?

and just because she's a bit successful doesn't mean she could be a very important person in the world?

    prove it...loser!

  • @maicongphuc i know ur a jealous little bitch and only cares about guys penetrating ur pussy. and doing all the things she does at age of 17 is not "little successful".

  • She looks good but I think she is learned to smile and pretend ... born politician.

  • @verapamil07 ya, another said she does NOT have tiger parents, I said, she couldnt tell if she wanted to coz they would beat her into smiley and telling the world that her mother really isnt so bad, your right its a rehersed smile!

  • She is well-spoken.

  • @loverosamundkwan what??? did you hear how many times she said "like", or how she said "stuff like that" etc.

only in america is that well spoken :)

  • @LylesgoldMusic "what??? did you hear how many times she said "like", or how she said "stuff like that" etc."

This may seem shocking, but she is not a robot, but a 17 year old high school student. Would you rather that she recite perfectly enunciated and formal sentences instead? I think that would raise more eyebrows. In my humble opinion, she handled the situation with poise and confidence, on national TV with that douchey host.

  • I don't have a tiger mom but I HAVE A TIGER DAD! :P

Now I'm raking in the A's on my final transcript. All A's, no blemishes. Hehehehe... :D

  • 3. Everyone has the right to apply narrow-minded lens when judging interview participants - just because they are interview participants

    - just because someone is on TV doesn't give someone else the right to judge and ignore another culture’s viewpoints. Know the facts, don’t jump to conclusions, and – quite frankly, don’t be disrespectful.

  • 2. An Asian child disagreeing with his/her parents would immediately be "beat at home"

    - filial piety and respecting one's elders are central in the Chinese culture. That said, the strong family bonds and communication cited by Emily are rooted in a respect for ALL family members (as is the case in many cultures).

  • Consider some of the fundamental views made in this thread:

    1. With no other information, Emily is immediately labeled as "conniving" and lacking in innocence

    - there is a difference between confidently articulating oneself and being conniving. Such accusations from 12 minutes of video and a 'gut feeling’ is simply deplorable

    Part 1 of 3

  • @kioushan I was trying to let you know what trolling really was, but I see it's more trouble than it's worth, as you resort to name calling, very mature! The topic of being a "tiger daughter" was never mentioned in your replies to me. In fact all your replies has been about me generalizing someone, so I ask you, someone who "wants to stay on topic," what is your take on Emily? My original reply was on topic, it means that's what kind of children you raise when being a tiger mom, duh!

  • I also go to UTS and can attest to the fact that asian parents put a lot of pressure on their kids. I have seen kids cry, just because they got below 90% on a math test. I have friends that have never had a sleepover in their life and that play both piano and violin....asian parents are tough.

  • @kioushan a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into a desired emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.

I stated my opinion, and if some people don't like it, they call it trolling. It shows the maturity of her peers.

  • @cherrycoke32277 Herp Derp. I like to copy paste wikipedia too when I don't actually know what things are.

  • @kioushan I hate to address the obvious again, but the whole thing was about my original comment and how I was "trolling." Do you all know what trolling really mean? Again, it was a generalized comment about my experiences, and it DOES have negative implications which mintaloon defended and I in response defended myself. You seem to like to restate the obvious a lot. And the topic of conversation IS that I think she is a wolf in sheep's clothing, which I still stick to and defend.

  • @cherrycoke32277 But this entire video is about the topic of raising children. I don't see how your poor opinion of the girl is relevant to that particular topic.

  • yo..whats with this school bull. i am a mexican parent with 2 young kids and i let my kids do whatever they wanted because i love them.

my daughter can sleep over any guy house and i let her because she love to sleep over.

you should do what you feel like it

  • @usery3zz REALLY??! Well yeah if ur young daughter gets pregnant, I bet ur going to be a very proud dad to ur responsible kid. Look, what if ur daughter WANTS to drop out of highschool and she does not WANT to go to college, would u still be very supportive because u love her?

  • @quak2quak2quak Yeah! Litty dick you what beat the shit out her becaus she what self-determination.Man you are people make me sick. That is the differences beetwenn west and easten. Our way of life is better than violence

oppression and abuse.Money is not everything and what about suicide quota by Asian teenager.

    Abyssus abyssum invocat!

  • @nemesis20201

if you got no money. u get no pussy. fool. LOL

  • @quak2quak2quak

    ur mama

  • I love the conversation. Great.

  • Sleepovers at 5,6,7?!How come do you leave your kids sleep at other people's place at such a young age XD If teaching excellence, hardwork, respect is being a tigermom I wonder what Americans teach their kids then. I'm from Europe and I think her rules were extreme but she tried her best, to get her kids to do their best. I want to read the book to see what is the fuss about.

  • @kioushan no, to disagree with me does not automatically mean that they love Emily, however, I was accused of trolling, so that question should be more aimed at mintaloon is saying, "to disagree means you hate Emily?" The answer is still no. I made an observational comment. And if one was mature, they wouldn't be a slut. Being good at public speaking means just that. I simply noted her lack of "innocence" which has nothing to do with her being a good public speaker, but rather her character.

  • @cherrycoke32277 Well, to be honest, your original comment did seem pretty troll; it really didn't have any relevance to the actual discussion and did have negative implications. I don't think it's particularly unreasonable for mintaloon to defend her friend, if they do go to the same school.

Either way, I think we're really straying from the actual topic of discussion.

  • @mintaloon btw, I'm glad for you that you know someone as wonderful as she is. Maybe throw an honorary parade for her or start a fan club for her as you seem the most likely candidate to be president.

  • @cherrycoke32277 So... to disagree with you automatically means an immediate love for Emily?

  • @mintaloon Success is defined differently by different people, and I'm very happy with my own "successes" being in medical school, so before you say to others that they can't "achieve" anything, well, I better let other doctors know that we have become obsolete. I also said what I said because Emily lacks an innocence about her compared to other girls her age. She seems either conditioned or manipulative... again, a generalization. When doing an interview for all to see, be ready to be judged.

  • @cherrycoke32277 A person can be mature without being a slut...

Plus, simply because a person can present themselves well in the public eye doesn't mean they're necessarily a mature person. It just means they're good at public speaking.

  • @kioushan it is a generalization and that is all it is, no need to point out the obvious.

  • Amy Chua, the Tiger Mom, is talking about how to achieve excellence and rise to the top. That may not be your objective. But if you want to rise to the top, you need to heed her advice. Amy Chua herself has achieved remarkable accomplishment in her own life. Both Amy Chua and this lovely young lady are a great example of the success of the Chinese parenting model.

  • ALEX GOOTTTTTTTT

  • new rule: not allowed to cross the street without permission

  • @omgimroflmao My favorite "Stroke Improvement" lol

  • I knew this guy was Canadian! This may sound crazy, but it almost seems like he has a Canadian aura!

  • man her mum one crazy bitch (no offence)

  • Congratulation! From a Tiger Daughter, she'll soon graduate to a Dragon Lady...

  • so well spoken for her age

  • Great interview, write a book Emily Luk... "Memoires of a Tiger Daughter"

  • @MrEthekyaa jealousy is a feeling that gets nobody anywhere. I am not jealous nor do I ever want to be as "hardworking" as she is, even at my age now (which I probably double). I am perfectly happy being a measly med student who enjoys her down time sleeping and being a couch potato. Just calling it as I see it. Don't hate, its so unbecoming of you.

  • she would get her ass beat at home if she said or suggestion anything remotely unflattering about her parents on provincial television

  • She is a conniving little girl. She is smart and knows how to work the interview. I know someone who is just like her and they get high everyday and is promiscuous, while putting up an act of being perfect while being anything but!

  • @cherrycoke32277 You're jealous just because you could never have been that hardworking at her age. Just because you're unable to do something doesn't mean there aren't others who are capable.

  • @cherrycoke32277 do you mean yourself? ;p

but yes, i do know what you mean. still, does not deter from the fact that she's keeping her family happy. if she's able to lead a life of her own in the background, i say more power to her. that takes skills, you know. ;)

  • @cherrycoke32277 what a troll.

I do happen to know emily personally (same school, same year), and believe me, she is anything but that. I do agree entirely with one of the comments below mine: Just because you can't achieve something doesn't mean others can't.

  • @cherrycoke32277 What a generalization... Just because you know someone who acts like that, don't assume everyone who shares similarities with that person to be exactly the same.

  • @cherrycoke32277 So why is she conniving?

  • @cherrycoke32277 What a trolling comment. The fact that you do not have the open mindedness or good will to see the goodness in other people just shows what a sad person you are.

  • Ah, yes. Interesting.

But what did you DO at those sleepovers?

    Yes, excellent. Tell me more.

    You're such a creeper, Steve. :P

  • Hong Kong's gift to Canada.
