  • Saw you at the Johny Winters show at Bb Kings in NYC , great show lots of fun,

Also Andy Aledort was very impressive!

Any way trying to figure out what pickups to put in a guitar we are building, thanks for the tips in this video.

  • very helpful, thanks man!

  • At 3:01 you said that single coil and humbucker pickups are the most popular... Are there other kinds of pickups?

  • @MTLguitarist98 yes, the motherbuckers, minihumbuckers, EMG, lace sensor.

  • Is that a fender am std strat? what do you prefer? the hss or sss?

  • Is that a fender am std strat?

  • can you answer me a question? i have a fender standard series that has sss and when i put the lead tone on my amp it makes a lot of noise but when i tried a guitar that has humbuckers the noise was canceled why is that?

  • @MatKiller1197 Probably because that noise is the hum that the humbuckers are bucking. That's why people wanted to use humbuckers, but they sound so different that both styles are still popular.

You would probably be able to play your Fender with less noise if you shielded it. Read about that on a site called GuitarNuts.

  • @MatKiller1197 hum buckers are two single coils woundtogether out of phase the opssosite phase bucks the m\ hum

  • @MatKiller1197 that is because the coils of a humbucker are wired in series but have reverse polarity. It causes the stray signal to appear twice but due to the fact that the coils are wired in countephase the stray signals cancel each other out almost completely.

  • his thumb's broken

  • If any one here is into metal, forget the Humbucker. 2 words: EMG Pickups

  • @Scassizzle1231 ...EMGs are humbuckers... and they also have single-coils... *facepalm

  • @Scassizzle1231 bullshit this guy knows nothing

  • Please will someone help me, I'm not sure on what kind of of humbucker bridge pickup for my Fender Sytle guitar, I want the kind punk rock, rock style (Like Green Day, Blink 182, and Sum 41) can somone suggest an appropiate pickup please Thanks ;)

  • @mousey26133 a really good pickup for pop punk is the duncan invader which is $79 tom delonge used that in his signature strat when he played fender...if you cant afford that a cheaper version is the duncan detanator i have one of them an it sounds alright (i play blink 182 and fall out boy style)

  • @kottonmouthkings5 Thanks i think i'll get an Invader, the only downside is fitting it into a single coil slot

  • Nicholas Cage, is that you?

  • You know what would be awesome ? A strat with H-S-H-S-H or S-H-S-H-S, or even with coils taps or humbucking single coils or etc. I just might have to figure out how to do that, after I go and buy a new strat so I don't have to modify my current one.

  • @TheEternalLeader or you could by a gibson or epiphone nighthawk custom, it has a H S Mini HB setup and the coils of the humbuckers can be split. It goes from an SG type of sound to a Tele or Strat in the fraction of the second it takes you to pull the tone knob.

  • I have a Squier Affinity Stratocaster Left Handed. Is it possible to install a humbucker if i buy a fender humbucker and a suitable pickguard?

  • IT'S CAPTAIN OBVIOUS!!!!!!!

  • wewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

  • He's so big he should a drummer ..

  • i'm quite noob when it comes to pickups.. i have a question, i have a kramer pacer classic which was around 400 dollars and my first guitar which was like 100 bucks they sound exactly the same

i was thinking about buying a guitar which has Dimarzio tone zone and evolution pick ups in it. will it even sound any more differently? small or big difference?

  • @store1992 Depends a lot on the amp.

  • @store1992 depends on your amp. If you have a modelling amp like the line 6 spider or POD etc .. you won't hear much of a difference between guitars and or pickups. The problem with some modelling gear is that the amp emulation often does not respond dynamically enough.

  • @tangypasta haha

  • I want that Wayne Kramer SHS

  • I think that long, hard guitar neck is substituting for something

  • 2 minutes and 30 seconds of bullshit at the beginning... tsk tsk tsk...

  • about the interference with the single coils, does anyones make a kind of beeping sound if your phone goes off near it ??

  • sweet thats awsome thanks for the video but, what kind of pickups i should get i like classic rock but i like to play metal once in a while

  • Everybody Needs To Quit Feuding Between Humbuckers And Single Coils, And Just Use Both!!! Get An H-S-S Strat And Shut Up!!! XD

  • @DylanBStringer91 i have an H-S-H Ibanez RG series and love the tone versatality. :P

  • @develia Yeah, They're Extremely Versatile!!! I'd Like To Get A Fender Stratocaster H-S-H, But Have Coil Taps For The Humbuckers!!! I Could Make That Strat S-S-S, H-S-S, S-S-H Or H-S-H!!! That Would Be The Ultimate Strat!!!

  • @DylanBStringer91 heheh yeah! btw do u think there's any way of putting humbuckers into a fender strat having only 3 single coils? i've heard about those hot rails that combine a humbucker into the size of a single coil.. btw its a squier so do u think its worth putting them on a low end guitar?

  • @develia I Would Get A Single Coil Size Humbucker For The Neck, But If You Want A Full Sized Humbucker, You'll Have To Take It To A Music Store To Have It Installed!!! If You Like The Way The Squire Plays And Feels, Then Yes!!!

  • @develia

if you want that then you should get a guitar with three humbuckers and coil tap them. that way you can get a humbucker and single coil sound within one guitar :)

  • What is the best way to get a single coil sound from a humbucker? I've heard of coil tapping and coil splitting but what is the physical change that happens and really: what sounds most like a single coil?

  • @veryhighsamurai The Best Way To Get A Single Coil Sound Is To Get A Single Coil!!! I Love Coil Taps, But They Don't Have The True Single Coil Tone!!! If You Absolutely Have To Have A Humbucker In The Neck Or Bridge, Then I Suggest You Get Coil Taps, But If You Can Live With The 60 Cycle Hum, Then Get Single Coils!!!

  • @veryhighsamurai same thing a humbucker is two singlecoils wound together coil split or tapping just takes a coil out and you have a single coil

  • @veryhighsamurai coil splitting and coil tapping are the same thing; what happens is that one coil of the humbucker is taken out of the circuit.

  • hey im making a guitar in my shop call in 10th grade and i have the body with one place for one humbucker on the entire guitar and i was wondering if that is all i need for this guitar. i play several types of music like country, rock.metal, and alot of blues and i want to know what kind of humbucker will i need and i have a small price range it up to like $80 i made the hole for a standard size humbucker also.?

  • Thanks for the info. I've been trying to get the right tone out of my guitar. I just picked up an epiphone galaxy 25 amp.Now I have to work on getting the pedal loops right to clean up the signal...needless to say it's a great learning process.

  • I want to put a humbucker on my strat. You talked about a "stacked" humbucker. Is there a specific brand or do all the pickup companies make them?

  • Comment removed

  • Comment removed

  • @taurus1269 Most of the companies offer their own variation of stacked humbuckers; they are also called hot rails. For example; Di marzio's (fast tracks), Seymour Duncan's(shr1), Carvin's (TBH60-6) just to name a few of them. Personally i have two TBH60-6 on my guitar (bridge, neck); the sound is amazing and extremely versatile, it picks all the harmonies through the neck and it doesnt give you to much feedback and/ or buzz when youre amp is cranked to 11.

  • @taurus1269 you could try Seymour Duncan. They make a variety of SC sized Humbuckers like the little '59 or Hot Rails.

  • can you turn a single coil pickup to a humbucker?

  • @austin7956 y not? theres absolutly no way :( danm it

  • expierence calptop suck my ass

  • @sickstring11 Thanks dude

  • can i get a stacked humbucker for a strat deluxe??

  • 0:21

    Dave attell?

  • the title should be longer

  • go to 1:59 , the show is very entertaining bit.

LOL he's gritting his teeth like he was payed to say it XD

  • @MrWoodoop WOW rofl hilarious xD Nice catch.

  • @MrWoodoop haha at 6:35 he does it again xD

  • broken finger

  • @sickstring11

    thank you!

  • @sickstring11 Thank you sooooooo much!!!

  • can someone explain and tell me more about stock pickups and other brands of pickups?

ive heard of others like seymour duncans etc.. what the difference?

  • @punkiassjunki Well, all pickups sound a little different. And it depends on what sound you are after. Like for metal it's nice to have EMG's, DiMarzio or Seymour Duncan. They are known to have very high-output pickups. But there are of course different models of the pickups as well. Most people change their stock pickups or buys a guitar with the pickups they want already installed. It all comes down to what sound you want.

  • singles are for strats and humbuckers are for les pauls

  • I'm a single coil guy, I'm an all around strat guy, others are nice, but a strat guy nontheless. likewise humbuckers are nice, but I like the single-coil strat tone, humbuckers I like once in a while. but humbuckers on a Stratocaster? BLASPHEMY I SAY! If I want humbuckers, I'll buy some other brand like Gibson/Epiphone or Gretsch. Just my opinion.

    - P.S. I checked out a new Fender American Standard strat, with Alnico staggered pole pickups, has that real strat tone, but it's so much quieter!

  • como habla ese wey

  • what fender was that?

  • and all this time i thought your name was David Taubear

  • he looks like jordan rudess without goatie beard!

  • I own a Squier by Fender deluxe strat and I was wondering, would it be possible to switch my bridge single coil pickup for a humbucker bridge pickup? I'd prefer a humbucker bridge pickup over the single coil and I wanted to know if this was possible. I wasn't completely certain if he clarified that at 5:40 of the video, so can someone please elaborate for me?

  • @des9206 Yes, you can. You will need to buy a new pickguard with the hole already cut for the humbucker, or cut the one you have already.

  • @Zubirrex Thanks for the response, I had my guitar examined at guitarcenter and they verified that I can have a humbucker implanted.

  • which is the best pick up seymore dunkan or emg81 85

  • @joeldification Seymour Duncan!!! Emg Is B.S.!!!

  • Did you use that thumb-splint for slide?

  • hey thanks for this explanation, if you could do another video on this topic, and play some riffs on very different tones with a variety of pickups (p90, emg, active passive, etc), i would LUV it!!!.... this is important because, i think, like me, many people are buying completely online now a days, and who are beginners, and wanting to find their perfect tone, u know....plz.

  • you really seem to know a lot man, help me out if you can plz, i have a epiphone black beauty less paul 3 pickups ... i wanna replace them with a gibson classic 57 and a seymour duncan SH-5 on neck to get a nice sound (as ive been told) what the hell do i do with the middle pickup?...i like rock similar to AC/DC, Slash, Airbourne, Zakk Wylde, BB King(when clean) so do i just leave it there or does it REALLY MATTER?, and is the combo i gave you going to give me a good sound to play all those?

  • talk much ?

  • how much more do the mexican made ones go for than the ones with all single coils

  • will some1 post a vid on how to put emg alx hz pickups in?

  • Awesome lesson

    Rock on brother !!!

  • Standard Stratocaster® HSS

  • is this a guitar video or a publicity video cause that was all i sa

  • so my cheap ass fender gives ALOT of feedbvack when on high gain... i have zeroed the problem to my cheap pickups and need new ones. any suggestions?

  • That is the most beautiful strat I've ever seen! I'd swap my Rickenbacker 330 for one of them!

  • Long enough title there?

  • @Glockenator

    really

  • @lifestraight because some people prefer the clearer, brighter, more thin sound that single coils give. Humbuckers are generally better for heavier music, they sound thicker, with a bit less clarity.

  • @Atotalfailure But if they give off too much humming, or feedbak, wouldn't that mean the sound is not clearer, and brighter?

  • @lifestraight somehow it just is, and the 60 cycle hum only really manifests at high gain levels, its not there all the time ( that said, the quality of the pickup can have a drastic effect as well)

  • If single coil pickups give off feedback or too much humming, why do people use them at all?

  • i have a FERNANDEZ red strat like that... and i always wondered why the guitar had "two picks" in that place... and the bridge is different from that... i will up a photo when i can... U_U

  • I would love to see commentary on where to toggle for various genres of music or roles -- for example -- when to use just the neck single coil, or both single coils, or the center single coil alone, or all, based on whether soloing or playing rythm, finger picking, etc. --- some insight onto best practices would be great -- do any of your vids address this? John

  • @clorox779 Great request.

  • For very introductory beginning players can u tell us what the function of a pickup is? What are differences between neck, bridge, and humbucker pickups?

  • If your single coil is huming, boss makes a pedal called a noise suppresser, and that will help with the hum.

  • thats a sick strat what is it where could i buy one

  • What would be good emg humbuckers and single coils that can go together and be good for metal.

  • I have that exact Strat! First time I've seen anyone else with it!

  • humbuckers win for me

  • @Ruiso1 same here

  • Does anyone else think that this guy looks like Dio? Any feedback welcome :)

  • @P2GearsOfWar as in ronnie james dio? no way

  • @metallover54 he has the same long round face

  • i know what you mean by interference i got interference from the radio and was listing to baseball announcers on my amp it was kinda funny

  • I was in a different window when he started talking and it sounded like James Hetfield haha.

    Great video, thanks!

  • Dude your voice is so soothing... lol dunny why.. but great video!

  • not bad after starting with a 2 and 1/2 minute promotional

  • looking at a floyd rose discvoery theres one with 3 single coils im looking at that one

but what sound does single coils give i play metal

  • maybe EMG HZ duel 1 in neck 1 in bridge

  • own the hz set and i dont like it, have a flat sound in my opinion ive taken a liking to GFS pickups though especially the crunchy pat

  • what would be good pickups for a metal style of playing

  • @beautifuldecay18... Humbuckers.

  • HH 2x Humbucker... most favorite are EMG Humbucker. These are active Humbuckers

  • this has been probably one the most informatist vids ever thanks

  • can anyone tell me what that wierd slanted pickup is on a telecaster... is it a just a single coil or is it some wierd one thats only on telecasters?

  • Just a single coil which is slanted.

    Cheers.

  • oh right... cool

  • @gibsondanny

if your asking about the bridge pickup it effects the tone and in my opinion looks cool on the stratocaster. but the telecaster bridge pickup has higher output .

  • It's just a single coil, it's slanted to make the higher stings sound brighter becuase that's the end of the pickup that's slanted towards to bridge.

  • @gibsondanny just a normal single coil

  • Yeah, just a single-coil.

The coil is a little fatter than on a Strat, though; that's why it looks slightly different.

  • @gibsondanny It's a single coil.

  • what happened to his finger?

  • what is the difference in tone

  • I have owned both humbucker guitars and single coil configured guitars the tone is very different between the two singles are a thinner not as distorted sounding humbuckers are thicker sounding warmer and hive a smooth sound.

Choosing between the two i would go for humbuckers but it is close single coils are amazing i would have both.

What music do you listen to? do they use singles or humbuckers which sound do you like best?

  • i like humbucker pickup alot mre because im more into playing with distortion. im that kinda player

  • whats a very good but fairly cheap humbucker brand for metal??

  • ibanez, esp, jackson

  • thanks

  • about how much do they cost?

  • @fenderstrat2121 Seymour Duncan is great. I use Dimebucker (SH-13) and it's fucking amazing. And relatively not expensive.

  • I chose a matched set of Seymour Duncan Stacked Mini-Humbuckers,

Cool rails for neck, vintage rails for middle, hot rails for bridge.

These babies slot straight into the standard single-coil slots on your strat.

    These were about £68 each.

You can get them with white or black covers. They sound great with plenty of tonal variety.

  • i like the sound of the single coil they sound nice but the humbuckers are still cool just too muddy

  • This guy is amazing.

I've learned so much from this video.

  • I like Washburn's VCC tone control system were on their WI64 dual humbucker guitar you can get the sound of a single coil out of a humbucker without the buzz and the hum. You should check it out.

  • so basically a humbucker is just 2 passive pick ups next to each other

  • basically, 2 lower-output single coils next to each other coiled in a way that cancels 60-cycle hum (thus, "hum bucker")

  • A chap on A Complete Custom Electric Guitar can help you

  • is a $200 ibanez jumpstart pack worth the money??? : /

  • no. buy yamaha eg112 and some laney practice amp (10 W) if you want to save money or buy mex strat and marshal amp

  • i personally have been turned off from ibanez because the bass i bought was pretty sucky. I think most low end ibanez would have poor quality control like my 300 dollar bass. do ur research, and go to used instrument stores and you might find a beat up looking guitar, but it plays really well for really cheap because of the cosmetic flaws. that's probably how you want to start

  • Personally, I like Ibanez, but I've never bought a jumpstart/beginner pack from any brand because to me, it's pretty obvious the whole set is gonna be in bad quality. I got my first electric guitar back in May, but I had actually won it. A Mahar Stratocaster. It's not really a known brand, but it's okay for beginners. I do suggest if you buy an Ibanez guitar, get a $300+ one. Also, for amps, get one that lasts, LONG. I got a Vox Valvetronix VT30 for $270.

  • no,

better off saving money, you dont want that cheap amp, and the guitar goes out of tune, look at the ibanez RG and get a nice fender reverb used

  • I'd rather get an Epiphone starter pack. Ibanez is still good, though. Just personal preference. :P

  • naw,, i think you should go with a fender, mexican made, or a squier pack

  • could i make a entrylevel guitar sound really amazing by replacing pickups, tuners and bridge?

  • You could, but it would really depend on the guitar you're working on. Generally speaking, the cheapest guitars out there aren't really worth modifying, and you get a much better sound getting a guitar with the gear you want built in with it. That said there are some 'good' cheap guitars out there, and I guess it comes down to how much ur willing to spend on it, and how much it would cost to get a new guitar.

  • my pickups used to pick up tfm radio during gigs. funny!

  • Another useful video. Good work bro.

  • weird, i was told an equally logical but entierly diff explination on the workings of the humbucker

  • I love your guitar !! =)

  • David what happened to that thumb. Great lesson, Great guitar. Rock on !!

  • I fractured my thumb playing basketball - have to wear the splint for 4-6 weeks. Bummer, but I am getting through it - will take more than a broken bone to stop the rock here at nlg

    rockon!

    DT

  • @rockongoodpeople dave your great and you have great lessons. I wannt to buld up my superstrat replacing pickups and whammy bar with humbuckers and floyd rose, could you do a tech video how to replace those things. There are some on youtube but i trust only pros and u and ur team are super pros so pls do the lesson.

  • @rockongoodpeople cant use it as a slide the sound sucks

  • @rockongoodpeople thts inspiring

  • tht strat looks kickass

  • cause it is

  • i feel like i owe you money for everything you've taught me

  • that strat is sooooo cool :D

  • 5000 views in 6 days

  • i hav the same strat, just tobacco sunburst. nice guitar. ur lessons rule, keep it up

  • Maybe you could also do a video about how different humbucking and single coil bridge pickups sound in a strat having some and lots of overdrive/distortion? I would also be nice to gather more knowledge about which pickup position suits which kinds of things! :d

  • Damn! i rated it one star by accident :( Well thanks for the link. Really appreciated it.

  • what do you wear on uR thumb? :D

  • I think he broke his thumb mate lol

  • thanks Dude, keep up the great videos

  • Yeah take off the plastic cover. It's not going to ruin the guitar but it might interfere with your tone because there is a layer between the pole pieces (the little metal circles in your pickup) and the strings and you want the best signal possible. So yes, take 'em off.

  • what model of Strat is that please?

  • Hi - the strat I use in this video is a 2003USA standard fender stratocaster with swamp ash body sienna sunburst finish and HSS pickup config

    rockon!

  • Hey lad im Matt i've been playing guitar for about a year now and i was wondering whats your personal favorite? gibson or fender?
