  • call me dull, but it seems a bit monochromatic to me. i like a beat that people can dance to, especially from a marimba, this sounds like techno without a bassline to me.

  • It takes a little while to memorize it :/

  • Saw this live, at Cambridge corn exchange and got told off for getting up and dancing!

    Magical.

  • Man I think I might have shed a tear or two if I was enjoying this live. Still amazing on youtube.

  • I am not an experienced percussionist, but I am a composer and performer. The pure emotions that this piece evokes in the human body would prevent me from ever performing this live even if I had marimba chops. Excellent work.

  • it looks so cool as well as sounding awesome!

  • last week kyle gann said this was one of the wost post-minimalist pieces of this generation. gann is generally right about these things.

everything here has been done before. its reassuring to know that everyone here has studied "music" at a "university." didnt clarinetists and pianists play this back in the 70's?

  • @ofatheroartificer I'm sure glad I don't need your permission to enjoy this.

  • @ofatheroartificer Did you know everything is a competition? Everyone should always compare music to other music because it is imperative to make lists of 'the best' and 'the worst'. No. Shut the h**l up. No one came here to listen to you. Who cares if its 'been done before'. Reich acknowledges that this isn't his own idea--there's Balinese and other southeast asian influence and yeah, his contemporaries influenced him too. Not a single person here is interested in your pretentious bashing.

  • @ofatheroartificer Part II: This is beautiful, evocative music. Get with it or get out.

  • @ofatheroartificer so? Even though something isn't super complicated, it doesn't mean it's not smart and good. This here is a prime example of simplicity at its best.

  • @nickman287 No, Phillip Glass is simplicity at its best. This is really annoying.

  • 6 Men

    6 Marimbas

    1 Concert

    TOUCHWOOD

Phasing into a cinema near you...

  • @mcs89 i did the exact same thing xP

  • Wow. I can only wish, someday.

  • as soon as this starts, you know it's Reich. great stuff that just has that mellow feel

  • man...4:50 is incredible

  • This is amazing.

  • WTF, this is just Six Pianos w/ marimbas.

  • Why so many people prefer Lady gaga and Justin Bieber instead of such great music?..

  • @TheKostick because they grew up with a bad taste in their mouths.

  • There should be a 10 hours version of this on youtube instead of nyan cat and the like

  • I said "wow" to myself in the first 10 seconds. this is so beautiful

  • Thanks for uploadin this cassic.. Never saw the performance before

  • I didn't realize until the 6th listen that this took place at my alma mater! Awesome! Way to go UK.

  • Wow!!! This is great for meditation.

  • @albatros44444 I was just thinking the same thing. This stuff re-patterns brain waves in wonderful ways.

  • Powerful.

  • Fantastic.

  • @zenmachinefilms Thanks a lot. Glad you enjoyed it!

  • @zenmachinefilms Thanks!

  • @andybliss1 Thanks so much!

  • is this the marimba version of six pianos?

  • @hannah34265 Yes it is. Six Pianos was I believe in 1973 and this was done in 1986 if i remember right. Thanks for watching!

  • @hannah34265 Yep!

  • Genius! 'Bliss' captures it quite correctly!

  • @SKOTP69 Thank you so much for your kind words.

  • not bad but it's hard to really tell - this piece requires machine precision and it seems like it might be a bit too sloppy, though hard to tell with the recording

  • Great performance. I'd pay to see it live! I posted this on FB a couple of weeks ago; no-one admitted to liking it, but I see the hits have jumped.

  • @hhspchh Thanks for the "virtual" support by reposting.

  • is it weird that at 4:50 i was reminded by TOTO's Africa?? (at the break section)

  • I love the psycho acoustic by products these pieces create. So harmonious and relaxing!

  • Love the minor modulation at 4:50

  • great performance. But why does the end just fade out!!!

  • @afterthought9 See "Part Two" with the same title. Thanks for your comment!

  • steve riech is a musical genius and the players are incredibly talented

  • good wood

  • Its a shame most people know minimalism by Phillip Glass, when Steve Reich is so amazing

  • @nmitchell076 glass too!... Is the other side of the same coin...

  • I am a big fan and this is one of the reasons why!

  • so calming, sounds like a waterfall or a river

  • V ery

    D ope

    btw, nice tags lol

  • dope

  • This just makes me want to learn the Marimba so much!! :D

  • Amazing.

  • How great is this?

  • It wasn't until I just watched another video interviewing him regarding "Six Pianos" did I realize it's the exact same pattern as "Six Marimbas" just in a different key.

  • All Steve Reich music sounds to me like hand made electronic music, like, I never tought I would see people play this kind of music live. Pretty fascinating. After all I think I don't much about music lol

  • What a joy to see these young musicians pull this off so brilliantly.

  • its funny how part one has nearly four times as many views as part two

  • amazing piece and amazing performance! i used to live in lexington but i moved before this performance--would have loved to have seen it live!

  • really excellent!

  • sounds amazing

  • You all play wonderfully. Great job

  • absolutely fantastic. what a sound world he creates

  • fregnoooo

  • Lol,

    And totally agree with funkysnareplayer1993,

I just hope we don't screw up:)

    This is completely amazing

  • This is my favorite Steve Reich piece, and really well done here. Thanks for posting!

  • OMG! :O that is so freaking amazing.

  • Amazing rendition, it is flawless. Steve would be proud.
