call me dull, but it seems a bit monochromatic to me. i like a beat that people can dance to, especially from a marimba, this sounds like techno without a bassline to me.
"last week kyle gann said this was one of the worst post-minimalist pieces of this generation. gann is generally right about these things." Kyle Gann wouldn't know what to do with an ensemble of 6 marimbas, so he faults a composer who found something to do with an ensemble of 6 marimbas.
I am not an experienced percussionist, but I am a composer and performer. The pure emotions that this piece evokes in the human body would prevent me from ever performing this live even if I had marimba chops. Excellent work.
last week kyle gann said this was one of the wost post-minimalist pieces of this generation. gann is generally right about these things.
everything here has been done before. its reassuring to know that everyone here has studied "music" at a "university." didnt clarinetists and pianists play this back in the 70's?
@ofatheroartificer Did you know everything is a competition? Everyone should always compare music to other music because it is imperative to make lists of 'the best' and 'the worst'. No. Shut the h**l up. No one came here to listen to you. Who cares if its 'been done before'. Reich acknowledges that this isn't his own idea--there's Balinese and other southeast asian influence and yeah, his contemporaries influenced him too. Not a single person here is interested in your pretentious bashing.
@ofatheroartificer so? Even though something isn't super complicated, it doesn't mean it's not smart and good. This here is a prime example of simplicity at its best.
not bad but it's hard to really tell - this piece requires machine precision and it seems like it might be a bit too sloppy, though hard to tell with the recording
It wasn't until I just watched another video interviewing him regarding "Six Pianos" did I realize it's the exact same pattern as "Six Marimbas" just in a different key.
All Steve Reich music sounds to me like hand made electronic music, like, I never tought I would see people play this kind of music live. Pretty fascinating. After all I think I don't much about music lol

hannah34265 11 months ago
@hannah34265 Yes it is. Six Pianos was I believe in 1973 and this was done in 1986 if i remember right. Thanks for watching!
