Worth reading the excellent book for the more uplifting ending and brilliant illustrations by Alfred Wainwright.
The Telegraph has reported on the proposed building over the area that inspired Watership Down - but here in Cumbria exactly the area where the Plague Dogs is set there is a plan to mine the biggest hole in the world and dump nuclear wastes which would percolate to the surface of this leaky land.
@Artivistmb Uplifting ending? Do you mean the re-write the author did so that the dogs survived? That's not the original ending he wrote. The dogs drown in the end. Though terribly sad, I perfer that ending, because the only way those two could truly find peace was in death. That's what the ending symbolised.
this was an excellent animation in the perspective of 2 dogs who are/have been used in experimental testing. 1 dog seems to understand there is something wrong while the other is in a sense defeated. this movie is touching compelling and very enlightening. it was ,as far as im concerned, not That shocking but would be best explained to your kids about government and cosmetic testing on animals, afterwards. i gave this movie 5/5 stars,
Just watched this movie recently... It was a pretty good movie but it the most depressing movie I've ever seen, seriously, everything else is a comedy compared to this.
i don't understand how i am 12 and i don't want to watch this but i have seen felidae... felidae is a very VERY disturbing film but i like it x3 except for the disturbing parts D:
@MrsStaffiesRock I think its absolutely wonderful you watch these movies and your parents are ok with it. Some children have the capacity to watch these movies and others do not. Its all subjective. Before I was ten I watched Watership Down, Plague Dogs, and Fantastic Planet. You show intelligence and empathy to be able to watch movies like this and I would like to commend you. I implore you to read the books though, they are far superior to the films :D
Wow,thanks im going to take your advice and do so.I write stories myself and there pretty simple.I wrote 'A snarling jaw' which is still not finished. Its about 2 dogs and they got lost in a orchid with there human.May i give you a extract for you?
amazing piece of animation, seeing the struggle the dogs put up trying to survive and how they both physiologically grow is pretty amazing. its also a master of suspense and terror including some shocking scenes that my not be for a younger audience. (1-6)
the animation is beautiful considering they did not use Roto-scoping to animate the dogs or humans at all :)
Can some one please help me? I love this movie, i have it on dvd and also own the book. But could some one point out some other movies simaler to this? Thank you :) xx
@okamiweed If you watch it, be prepared to cry. It has quite a couple of shocking scenes, and the ending is very sad. I wouldn't recommend it to people under 17.
@okamiweed only if your children are 17 or older, or you show them bloody movies with tragic endings regularly. If not, then I'd suggest you watch it without the kids around. It does hold a very important message that kids should be taught, but I think it might be a bit too much for younger kids.
@okamiweed honestly I don't know the rating :( but if you watch it with your kids I'd definately sit them down and explain that the movie will be a bit shocking, but that's just me. Seriously though, it's not as horrible as Felidae; I would NEVER show my kids that one. So yeah, I suggest you watch it with your family if you want.
@MissMarientose To me this is not a scary film.Im okay with this sorta stuff but i was just asking what it was like.I also like watership down, its a great film.

Just finished watching this movie on Netflix :( It. Was. So. Sad! I read the 'newer edition' of the book so I totally didn't see the ending coming. Way more bloody and sad than Watership Down, but both books/movies are great. I wish they would make more realistic and truthful animated movies like this nowadays. I can't believe even after seeing/reading things like this people STILL do animal testing; makes me sick :(
@wolfsrain0000 It's rather more depressing than Watership Down, I must say! :P It's about two dogs who escape from an animal testing laboratory and have to try and survive in the wilderness, while being hunted down by humans who wrongly suspect them of carrying the plague. It's an incredibly bleak and disturbing film, but a total work of art if you can cope with how depressing it becomes. ;^^
@wolfsrain0000 I don't want to spoil the ending! You'll have to see it for yourself if you want to find out. :P It's certainly not a happy ending, though! ;^^

@wolfsrain0000 *SPOILER WARNING FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T SEEN IT*
It's quite ambiguous in the cut version, but in the uncut version of the film it's made clear that the dogs drown. :( They were trying to get to Snitter's island, but halfway through swimming it was revealed that the island was just another of his hallucinations. But yep, the film is a brilliant way to get the message across that animal testing is just cruel.
@myfatcat91 because he was at a animal testing center where they test human products on animals before selling them, they'd done something to his brain and he has a few flash backs of his owner, great film
watership down made me cry and im going to watch it again tomorrow the 2nd time in many years, felidae was good but this is the best out of all 3 and the end gets you thinking
@stuffofstuff1 Um... what movie did you watch? *spoiler* The doggies drown at the end... i know the book ends differently but in the movie they clearly die (because that's the most logical ending really the dog's had no real chance)
i love this movie. it was sad though. kinda funny though, i was watching the shinbone alley trailer, and this was in the suggestions, and those two movies i watched last night in that order haha ^^
Pretty sure this is the film that disturbed me as a child (can't be sure though, I've been trying to work it out for years). My local library screened some anti-vivisection film for the kiddies (nice idea eh?!) and all I previously recalled was rabbits having their eyes injected in a lab. Seeing that poor dog with the head injury is ringing bells though. My mother should have sued that library, this does NOT look like it's for kids. Gave me nightmares for years!
@pippylunalove I didn't say it WAS for kids. My local library however did when as, when a child, it was advertised as a special screening for children. I remember it vividly (I must have been under 6), taken by my unknowing mother and sitting with a gaggle of restless, excitable children to watch a 'cartoon' and then being scarred for life seeing this. My mother has never forgiven herself. I remember being removed along with many other crying children by our equally upset parents. Stupid library
@pippylunalove I got over it, EVENTUALLY ;) I'd love to know if I'm combining my memories of seeing both films as a child (saw WD when slightly older), were there rabbits injected in the eyes in PD or am I combining the two films cos the animation style is similar (or maybe it's supressed memories of yet another gruesome film I shouldn't have seen?)? Maybe the lab monkeys get injected, I can't bring myself to watch PD after seeing this trailer (bad memories *lol*) so maybe will never know?
@SareyGamp for watership down i dont think there was much human interaction all i remember was the bulldozer cause they were using the rabbit warrens and the way of life to represent communism. so i think that was plague dogs. well plague dogs doesn't look as bad as Felidade - which looks really really scary and horrific. btw haven't seen felidade.
@pippylunalove I didn't mean the rabbits were injected actually in WD (WD doesn't freak me out, only when I was a kid and that's cos I dislike rabbits anyway *lol*), merely that I'd thought of the rabbits from there and maybe my memory had accidently put them in PD. Having seen the trailer again I see there are rabbits in the lab so maybe WD has nothing to do with tainting my memories of PD? Can anyone tell me if there are ANY lab animals in PD that get their eyes injected? Ta
@warriorcatsLPSwolves The dogs have escaped from a science lab where they were tested for medical purposes. The army is searching for them because rumours are spreading that the dogs carry the bubonic plague. Thats why they use the military.
@WolfFang650 I don't ike sad movie but I really want to watch it. I'm 12 and I've read Watership Down and it's my all-time favourite book. I also watched the movie and I wasn't bothered. I'm used to gore, but I still don't like sad movies. Do you think I know watch it? :)

One of the most shocking animated films I've ever seen. First time I watched it, I was 12 and I remember myself crying myself to sleep afterwards and having nightmares about it. I think it might be this film which turned me both vegetarian and got me started on activism against animal cruelty. Truly touching, but truly disturbing as well XP
Martin Rosen did such a great job adapting Watership Down and The Plague Dogs for the big screen. He should've made his own adaptation of Animal Farm,it would've been great.
this film was set in my home region, in the village of Coniston. though the lab never existed, the route the dogs took is all there. going past Swinside stone circle to end up at the coast, where they swam the sea to Walney Island. I just thought you might find that interesting.
@YahtzeeZombie actually, that first comment was wrong. i watched the movie again, paying more attention. They actually travelled north to Glenridding, west to Eskdale Green, then they caught the train to Ravenglass, where they started to swim. And there isn't any island, both the dogs die.
Hey, the sound's better! I thought this was going to be an official trailer. Good vid, though! I wonder if the official trailer mislead people about how cheerful this movie is.
@whatsherface: You could just google it, but I'll tell you anyway since I'm nice. The song is "Time and Tide" by Alan Price. It was written for the film. It's been made a lot shorter in this video.
why test on animals? there are plenty of new disney fans out there

saddest movie ive ever seen had to watch it in 2 parts, it was to hard in one go :'(

BEL79NUN 1 year ago
@BEL79NUN I always kind of wished he did an adaption of Black Fox Running, that was one of my favourites

i dont get the movies end? explain help?
fantasyfire101 1 year ago
this film was set in my home region, in the village of Coniston. though the lab never existed, the route the dogs took is all there. going past Swinside stone circle to end up at the coast, where they swam the sea to Walney Island. I just thought you might find that interesting.
DragonMasterThlayli 1 year ago 6
@DragonMasterThlayli that's pretty cool!
YahtzeeZombie 1 year ago
@YahtzeeZombie actually, that first comment was wrong. i watched the movie again, paying more attention. They actually travelled north to Glenridding, west to Eskdale Green, then they caught the train to Ravenglass, where they started to swim. And there isn't any island, both the dogs die.

did you make this trailer yourself? Great movie
harryotterrules 1 year ago
Hey, the sound's better! I thought this was going to be an official trailer. Good vid, though! I wonder if the official trailer mislead people about how cheerful this movie is.
@whatsherface: You could just google it, but I'll tell you anyway since I'm nice. The song is "Time and Tide" by Alan Price. It was written for the film. It's been made a lot shorter in this video.

The ending to the movie is a lot better i'd say.
But they're both good in their own right.
ScrewAttackEurope 2 years ago
I absoloutly adore the book, however the ending is a tad far fetched and I personally find the film ending more dramatic and interesting.

Haha, I remember watching the beginning of this when I was around five. My mom came in and was like "NO." Never did see the rest of it.

don`t get the ending of this movie, did they drown or not?
Bobban 2 years ago
Book no, movie yes.
MahtsFeather 2 years ago 2
They kept swimming til they drowned... but at least they died out of the hands of humans by choice
ParkourHardcore7 2 years ago
It's an ambiguous ending, so it's up to you how you interpret it.
Yuo can say they finally find their island and have a happy ending, or say that the island was a euphemism for them only finding sanctuary in death.

video quality sucks too...
