7:theism says that god loves everything equally, and he made the universe... but somehow we matter more to him and all he does is focus on us, and were the only beings that have souls... that doesnt make sense to me
Q3. I was raised in a Christian family and attended evangelical Bible-believing churches. My family has a Mennonite background but, until I was about 15, we attended the Christian and Missionary Alliance churches. After that, we went to a non-denominational "charismatic" church. I learned how to speak in tongues. I spent a few years in a post-secondary Bible school, majoring in biblical studies.
I think that my devotion to religion during my youth stunted my social and emotional development. My experience leads me to think that even if one's family is kind and loving, religion is bad for you. It is inherently abusive to indoctrinate a child with religious beliefs.
Q4. This is a really badly worded question but I'll give it a shot anyhow. I'm a market anarchist. That is, I think that government is unnecessary and that any service provided by government can be provided at least as well by truly free markets (including helping those who are in need).
I used to see government as a necessary evil. I no longer believe that government is necessary so, therefore, I see it as simply evil. I see belief in the necessity or goodness of government as analogous to belief in the existence of gods.
Q7. I hate it when someone simply quotes scripture and imagines that it somehow amounts to an argument for his or her position. If I'm feeling grumpy, I simply dismiss such a person as an idiot. If I'm in a more patient mood, I point out how the Bible contradicts reality, contradicts itself, and contradicts natural morality.
I also find it very frustrating when people repeat creationist arguments that were soundly refuted a long time ago, especially when those arguments involve a failure to understand what the claims of evolution actually are.
4)most controversial: value of life as a whole, life is just life, value like all human things is subjective.
5)not sure. I like "to bite a bit here a bit there"
6) Haven't read it
7)"1-All religions are right 2-One religion is right. wich one? why? 3-Any religion is right 'cos they are made up. superstition and mith
Choose your option. If I don't know something I just say I don't know it, not knowing something is not evidence for a supreme being, is just not knowing something"
1) Nothing. Because atheists have in common a lack of belief in the supernatural, the rest, we have different views about things etcetera and that's ok... free speech.
2)I don't want to convince people, just debate and let them decide. maybe someone with power and influence that can change things based in religious beliefs.
3)no religious upbringing; I'm self teaching about that 'cos I would know about it; after some time I had my conclusion and it's: Atheist
I'm agnostic, so I'm going to answer my questions from that point of view.
1. I would weed out the idiots in the atheist/agnostic community. Quite a few people aren't smart enough or ready to be challenged by religious nuts and I don't think weak-minded people belong in the the community.
2. I would like to convince Pastor John C. Hagee, the televangelist. He is not only high-profile in and beyond the evangelical community, but he is extremely influential.
3. I was brought up Jewish and picked up an atheistic attitude around the time of my bat-mitzvah. I realized that I couldn't connect with what I was reading or discussing, partly because it was in hebrew and partly because it seemed ridiculous. I began to question the Torah from that moment on, later becoming an agnostic thinker.
4. I think that my most controversial belief is that there is a distinguishable difference in intelligence between the atheist/agnostic community and the religious community. I believe that they never will be conducted, but if tests and surveys were conducted to measure intelligence in both communities the world would see that the higher iq lies within the atheist/agnostic community.
5. I'm excited by the prospect of more touch-screen technology in our future. Truthfully, I think it gives people more incentive to do research because it's sort of like a gimmick. More research can only lead to a more intelligent America.
no one is claiming that anything comes from nothing,it shows a lack of understanding about the big bang, however...
for the sake of argument lets claim that we did say it came from nothing...
religious people are claiming that something far BIGGER and more complex came from nothing, then created the universe ALSO out of nothing, their beliefs are far bigger and claim an omnipotent being ,so they should answer that question first.
7: Hard choice, if they are too dumb then they are funny and so not "least favorite" if they are too good (I have counted to one of those) then they are good and so not "least favorite". I suppose some old stuff like, logic was made by God so you can't use logic if you'r an Atheist.
Refuting it?
If X is true, then Y is true. Y is true, so X is true! Woops, guess you'r right. (You might want to point out that that was humour or the comment is likely to appear in the next "Atheist admits defeat")
1: Why change? What's better than a bunch of individuals each expressing their own mind and working together? (And if it would be one thing, it would be something concerning my own behaviour, such as being nicer to people)
2: Someone I cared about
3: Chatolic (academic) influence... I'd prefer that religion in front of any other
4: I think that the former Pope seemed like a nice guy (no real opinion on the present)
What will u do before the last moments when u lie in ur deathbed? Truly think about it and u will have hoped to be closer to god. MARK MY WORDS U WILL PRAY TO GOD BEFORE U DIE

1)i dont like the atheists that argue against religion purely because they want to rebel their arguments usually are driven by emotion not logic
2Bush so he cant use the excuse that god told him to
3)i was a Christian and when things started getting hard in my life i tried praying for some relief and the next week one of my best friends died go figure
4) i think that not all religious people are idiots just because they havent come to the same conclusions as you doesnt mean that they are stupid
7)convert or god will kill you, i have only come across this argument 3 or 4 times and its good that most theists know that this is crap how ever the people that do use this argument usually change the facts and leave out some of the most important bits
I think my 2 least fav arguements are "We didn't evolve from apes, we're too smart!" which A. misses the point, we ARE apes and B. smart??? The 2nd is using the bible as proof when the bible is the very thing being disputed!
And a deep, profound and very wise comment it was too. ;o) Of course the really big difference between humans and apes is that apes crap, pee and sweat, whilst us Godly Humans merely defecate, urinate and deludeourselvesicate.
3) Catholic. But my religious upbringing simply convinced me that Judo-Christrian mythology is WRONG. It was 9/11, allong with my brother going nuts, that convinced me that Religion is EVIL. That and the Bible itself. Although, in retrospect, my religious upbring does tell you something; Religious people are dishonest because they really don't tell you about the entire Bible.
6) I've quoted Hitchens but I disagree with his politics, he seems to be a tadd too much on the American's side. And the other two I haven't read much of them. And I enjoyed The God Delusion so I'm gonna say Dawkins.
7) My least favourite Theistic arguement is trhis one question that goes "Considdering how big the universe is (bla blah blah on and on and on about how big the universe is while you're politely waiting fro them to finish their question) how do you know there's no god-like creatures anywhere in the Multiverse?"
it's a long, boring, time-consuming question and, when the finally GET to the point, it's a Strawman! They're argueing against what I don't not believe.
Ok,.. i like the questions,.. so i'll give it shot.
Q1. I dont see it as a community,.. we only share our disbelief towards god, thats about all we share. So i dont think theres much to change as a whole.
Q2. I know someone, and i have tried. But coverting a cultmember is perhaps something on its own. Why,.. i was in love, and aware of malpractices in general.
Q3. No religion at home, christian schooling and friends though. It has granted me a level of insight on various aspects.
Q4. My most "controversial" viewpoint? I think religious institutes should be banned. They serve "evil" men, instead of supporting spritiual freedom of decent people.
Q5. Scientific endevour? Study of the mind, hypnosis, mindcontrol, coercive persuasion etc. Its the reason why i am so strongly presenting my views on religions and dogma's.
Q6. I dont pick favorites, i consider it ignorance to lift one above the other. (4 horseman, lol)
One question I've been wondering about for a while regards speciesism. We can value human life more than other forms of life because humans have a higher level and consciousness and capacity for happiness than do other animals. Under this logic, how can we value the lives of severely mentally handicapped humans over animals with higher intelligences? I want to think there is a good answer but can't come up with a valid philosophical explanation that isn't similar to racism.

Q5: String theory
Q7: You atheists come from apes, I come from Adam & Eve.

I think some of these issues bitterly divide a lot of secular humanists.
RandomCastaa 3 years ago
Q2: Venonfang. Not the pope: for political reasons, he would never admit it; or else after his death, like Jean Meslier.
Q3: Catholic. Boring repetitions at mass Sundays. And stupidities: religion is a program with too many kludges, hacks and patches and remains bugged.
Q5: Connection between quantum mecchanism and general relativity. And abiogenesis.
Q6: PZ Myers :-)
Q7: "God created the universe is a better explanation than the universe creating itself". To be simple: "Who created God?"

I've been looking at New Ageism.
I have noticed how potentially pernicious they are as they have no identifiable belief system so they are able to morph their opinions and adapt to criticism far faster.
They consider science that contradicts their beliefs as conspiracy theory.
All those who do not accept their beliefs are closed minded and brainwashed by an invisible global power.
They use psuedoscience in place of real science.
