Actually the crash of 1929 PREDICTED the Great Depression. The Fed might have slowed the decline, as we are doing now, but only to lengthen and possibly deepen it. I find Dr. Sylla's comments to be typically academic, much like the thinking of most of those in power who are making our current situation worse by not respecting market forces.
@ajgolfer1 Honestly, the Smoot-Hawley didn't cause or intensify the Great Depression (It didn't help though) Tariffs in the US pre-Smoot Hawley were already over 35%. Granted the Smoot-Hawley did hurt the economy since the US seriously lost its comparative advantage.
