One shouldn't judge the film maker to hard. Everyone who has filmed jet airplanes knows how hard it it to follow it in fligt, nice and smooth. I suspect he just cut away the bad parts of his video footage. /Tille, TeamM
Had a missile been fired, the SR71 would simply have accelerated and the difference in speed and altitude would have taken its toll long before the missile would have gotten anywhere near the Blackbird. It's a known fact, however, that the SwAF were using the SR71 for intercept practice on a regular basis. And as such, it was good practice.
The SR-71 was not flying at maximum altitude or speed, however it was still flying fast, this is a confirmed story and its just rubbish trying to demote the Viggen.
Besides, Sweden and the US were more like quiet allies, back then Sweden had a rather big army compared to now, able to bring up 1.8 million soldiers, with state of the art equippment.
the US saw Sweden like the defender of Scandinavia were the russians going to attack.
Besides it took awhile for the SR71 to accelerate.
Furthermore; what makes you think I'm "demoting Viggen"? I'm just stating the obvious. The JA37 was considered to perform very well when compared to its contemporaries, as did its predecessors. The laws of physics still do apply though.
And as a note, during the 1980s a wartime mobilization would have mustered 900 000 men and women. Not 1 800 000. Which wasn't bad, given the size of the population. As for the US, they were probably only vaguely aware of the Swedish presence at the time ;)
the event happened in 1987 June 29, a time wich the J-35 "Draken" was being phased out by the Viggen, and the Viggen was the primary interceptor.
Ofcourse the SR-71 crew werent so careful as they would have been over Sovjet airspace, they knew that even if the swedes would ever have a chance of a shot at them, they would never fire.
They were flying a ruitine trip over the baltic, which was flown many times, and yes the Viggens used it for interception practice.
That may be so. The first time I heard the story about the weapons lock and the greeting card was in -84 though, and in that version the incident took place during the 1970s with a J35 in the lead. It's become quite the urban myth over the years.
That is not to say a weapons lock never occurred. I'm sure several types of fighters from different airforces has achieved a weapons lock on the SR71 during it's rather long and illustrous career.
There was another SR-71 incident, it may have been the Draken then, anyhow the SR-71 had engine trouble, and was escorted out of Swedish airspace by Fighters, i belive it may been Draken.
These were meant to take on Soviet and NATO aircraft if they strayed into Sweden if the Cold War went Hot. DAMN... I think it would have been able to hold its own against the EAST and WEST. Add this to my fantasy Air Force!
Holy crap, really??? How I miss that!! Would you be able to send a link, or back this up a bit? You have piqued my curiosity!! Bad azz stuff man!!!! :D
There are several versions of that story, and I believe almost every airforce has its own version to pass on.
The Viggen (or the Draken, which is the plane occurring in the first version I've heard) could quite possibly have achieved a weapons lock on the SR71. Wouldn't have been that big a deal though, since it didn't prove anything but the capability to achieve a - lock.
How many times must i repeat that i DIDN'T edit anything ? A Guy gave me this movie many ywars ago and i just converted it in digital format, because i'a a huge Viggen-Fan...that's all ! B.T.W., is it So difficult to learn how to be a polite person ??? ;-) Perhaps Good manners aren't required on YouTube...???
Unfortunately people on youtube think that just ebcause they sit behind a monitor and no one can see them they can make rude comments about people.
One day there will be an incident where one of these morons insults the wrong person and that person somehow finds them in the real world and it's not gonna end well. lol.
Thanks for the video...and come on people, you are all mature adults in your 20s, 30s, and 40s, start acting like it. An 18 year old shouldn't have to tell you that.
Great plane and video thats a given but its too short just at times when its getting good it cuts off like the high speed pass at the end ,please upload an unedited version ,please!
yeah and that is also why we call it Viggen (Thunderbolt) :-) We still have them in hangars just waiting....specs are still up to date with speeds over mach2...:-) cheers
Great video, shame that the editing ruins the camera work. Let the shots run more mate, you're killing the feel of the piece. Try again mate, good start.
You are right, i know...:-)! unfortunately, i received the original movie from a guy some years ago and we simply converted it in digital format, without editing. I don't know the reason why the shots are cut so often, but there was nothing we could do to improve the movie...I chose to post it because i'm a huge Viggen's fan and this is the ONLY AirShow in Italy (near Rome, 1998) where italian people had a chance to admire a flying JA-37:-)!
Yeah the Viggen is the most powerfullest single engine plane in the world. 25.000 Horsepowers rather move this little beauty fast, fun facts: In full speed u can drive 8 minutes until its dry, the highest speed is like 2785 but then the fuel meter started to glow so they couldnt push it more, but the plane just wanted to go go more and more, in full speed the plane also suck in 200 m3 Air/second to keep the Compressor alive!
Well. the MiG-23 has a more powerful engine, but the F-105 is heavier. And as far as I know (how much that might be worth...) the F-105 is the worlds heaviest single engined jet-fighter.
I Know VigRifighter:-)! Once more, i thank You & Bunkerivast & other people for being so nice! One of my regret is not having planned a vacation to Sweden in time for visit an airbase & seeing an operational Viggen again...! I guess You saw those "guys" many times...! Bye
I HAVE to express my congratulations to MANY PEOPLE for winning a special prize : MOST BORING-ANNOYING PERSONS in the YouTube Community !!! I repeat it: a guy made this film with a camera and i simply converted it in "digital" format, leaving it as it was. No editiding, no modifications ...! Don't you like it? Please, don't watch it! Fortunately, many other people(i thank them all for they lovely comments) understood: this is simply a "special document" of a very special event ...
You Welcome, VIGRIFIGHTER! Actually, the guy who gave me the film didn't want to win any award ...:-) and i did my best! In any case I WAS THERE, and i can absure You that the people were amazed! Before that day, no one ever saw a "Live" Viggen in Italy...!
wonder what the russian in u-137 was think when viggen did those low level flying close to their conning tower 8-<9

Indeed, however Sweden was like a unofficial ally of Nato.
the only plane in the world who ever has had a lock on, on a Blackbird was a J37 Viggen :D
however ofcourse the pilot was ordered not to shoot.
Later the blackbird pilot sent a congratulation's card to the Swedish Viggen Pilot for getting a lock on.
