  • 2.16. If it can't be said in two minutes and sixteen seconds then what you have to say is too long.

    Perfection.

  • @librarian289 top quote :)

  • All hyperbole aside this is quite good.

  • you know what, nothing will ever sound as good as this, i know thats a really general comment, but seriously i love these, saw them support my bloody valentine when i still had long hair :)

  • gotta luv watchin the drummer

  • Do you know what is funny?

People and the press (NME) were raving a year ago about the Long Blondes who are a complete copy of The Shop Assistants, Tallulah, heavenly etc

    Big love from Greece

  • voi v............ kasvoin tän tän kanssa

  • I got the 12 inch single of "Somewhere in China" I bought in 1991. What a great song.

  • This still sounds bloody FANTASTIC...!

  • Their title "it's up to you" on C86 vinyl is also fantastic

  • Wasn't "It's all up to you" by The Darling Buds?

  • i used to have their records during the 80s....remember records?

  • I still have !!!

  • Saw them in 87 in small place in France and bought their LP after the concert drinking a beer with them at the bar ! What a great time

  • i have shop assistants records too..... can get them still in avalanche in Edinburgh

  • easily one of my favourite bands of all time/any know what sarah kneale and laura mcphail are up to now?//

  • been looking for "Fixed Grin" for yonks, anyone come accross a vid or footage of it anywhere?

  • Where is Alex Taylor now? I´ve been listening to this song for over 22 years now, on vinyl, cassette, minidisc, ipod - and I will cherish it forever on whatever medium. - Magical music! Angry guitars, pounding drums, and an adorable voice - where is Alex Taylor now?

  • Oh to be young again. One of my favourite records when I was a boy. Come to think of it, still is.

  • Their version of "Train from Kansas City" is awesome.. Whatever happened to The Motorcycle Boy?

  • saw them "support" the Mary Chain at Coasters - the hand written poster on the wall said it all; "The Jesus and Mary Chain will play for a maximum of 15 minutes" and they were fucking awful - COMPLETELY fucked on what i suspect was smack. The Shop Assistants however were fantastic and deserved better than they ultimately got...

  • Me too, but not there.

    Ace

  • Mary Chain is known for being shit on stage. They've caused riots and shit.

  • When the fuck is this gonna get re-issued????

  • looking for the big rock candy mountain!!!

  • been keeping my eye open for their stuff for ages. many, many thanks for posting.

    got any flatmates?

  • A great Canadian punk band called Fucked Up recently recorded a cover of this song. It's really good, search it out.

  • I love watching the drummer.

  • Their song on the C86 LP called "it's up to you" is awsome

  • they were one of my favourite all time bands! I still have all their singles and 12" s although I remember being a bit disappointed with the album.Safety Net was their finest hour for me,or maybe All That Ever Mattered

  • excellent video

is that done on st james centre roof?

some of the scenes of the video down at leith docks now totally unrecgonisble as well

  • I bought the first few Shop Assistants 7" singles and, you know, they were ok. But seeing this in the cold light of day in 2008, it's painfully obvious that they were just Jesus and Mary Chain copyists - signed no doubt during the deluge of Scottish bands signed in the wake of JAMC, when ANYONE in Scotland would have been signed if they were within 50 yards of a leather jacket and a stand up drummer....history has not been kind to Shop Assistants IMHO

  • this is so totally fucking great

    bless 'em

  • Perfect pop

  • FAN-TAS-TIC!!! This was my favourite band at college and I snuck into their final gig in Camden pretending to be a reporter from the NME. Oh those heady 80's days! Wonder where Alex Taylor is now?

  • Damn...Motorcycle Boy...they did that song "Here She Comes." I heard that song in the very early 90s and loved it. I finally found a copy online; unfortunately, it didn't hold up for me.

Here's a link: motorcycleboy dot indie-mp3 dot net

  • It's bands like this that have people convinced that girls can't do music.

  • The only people 'convinced that girls can't do music' are silly little boys who listen to heavy metal and use the word gay as an insult. Maybe things like bad parenting and peer pressure are to blame, rather than 1980s indie pop groups?

  • They appeared on the C86 NME compilation

  • I love you for putting this on. My all time favorite band.

  • Thanks I taped them doing a Peel session, loved their Ace of Spades cover

  • Its nice to be eighteen again. Thanks. ( crawls back under the rock he came from )

  • That would be Laura, then? :-)

She probably won't remember but when I was 17 and I had run away to Amsterdam they let us in for free at the Melkweg. Ah, great times! :-)

  • I thought Laura was the drummer...swoon!

  • Where is she now? Is she still singing?

  • How awesome! How is she doing now?

  • Pure sweetness !

  • This brings back so many amazing memories. Thank-you for putting it up!

  • holy crap!!! I would've killed to see this video in 1988! That was truly a treat. Thanks for the up!!!

  • Thanks for posting this.

  • please post motor cycle boy

  • Excellent pop, sounds very much like the Darling Buds or Talulah Gosh. Any more videos by the Assistants?

  • Thrilled to find some Shop Assistants on here, thanks for the upload :-)

  • Pure perfect trashpop minimalism - the ideal antidote for half a decade or more of Thatcherism. Shop Assistants rock!

  • filmed overlooking Edinburgh...one of my favorite places in the world! thanks yet once again. lovely.
