Great video and clarity. Hard to believe it has now been 18 years since she sank! Where has the time gone? It's still just as sad today as it was then. RIP those souls who lost their lives.
People where im from called that boat the "Gypsy ferry" back in the day, when it sailed between Finland and Sweden. Went on it a few times. Good boat, sad ending. R.I.P.
M/S Estonia was designed for coast route between Turku and Stockholm. In that time route between Tallinn and Stockholm had a long stretch of open sea, which was especially stormy in that night. Also Estonia was a poor country back then and they had ex-USSR attitude to maintenance, so they didn't care too much about warning signs which were clearly visible.
From what you can see in this clip, it's very calm sea. This is what Estonia was designed for, in my knowledge. It wasn't designed for that heavy-sea that the worthless captain on-board ignored.
@Squad2ND well she may have been designed for just normal baltic sea weather including storms, but she was old and in very bad condition so you can blame the crew (some of them) and the condition of the ship
I travelled on this ferry in Dec. 2-6 1990, from Leningrad to Ostend Belgium. I was beaten up severely by several members of crew and KGB. They sensed that I wasn't going to go back to soviet union so they decided to punish me for that. I put the broken bottle in the captain's throat and forced him to open the doors and I jumped onto the dock as the ship arrived at the port. Capt. was a bastard.
A horrible disaster. As a estonian I know, what I'm talking about. Remeber the accident day myself. Woke up, heard the news...and I just couldn't belive it. It just seemed too unreal. I didn't know anyone, who were on the ship that day, but at some point, I dropped few tears myself. The ship itself was a symbol well known to any estonian. It carried the name of the country. Estline, Estonia. We were all proud of that. Especially because of the Soviet Union collapse.
For flag understanding, the flag that is in mast after the bridge is the destination ship,if she goes to estonia, she would have estonian flag at the same spot, stern flag is where the ship is from
its so sad shes gone and all the people with her :( This video just makes it all so confusing,a beautiful ship, nice white and blue, the flags all waving in pride..Now, all that gone, fillt of shame by goverment fuck_ups and struglingpeople, dead,on the bottom of the sea. rip the dead and its sad we lost a ship who was more than just a ferry..great footage, sad history
The visor did not fall off at all during the disaster like the report claims.
The reason being that if so, the crew would've seen the garage light from the car deck illuminating the sea in front. Nothing like that was ever mentioned by the crew in their mayday or commented on in the report.
@bjnboy The visor was found a long way from the ship. The inner ramp stopped the light from being emitted and by the time it was breached, it was too late.
Actually, it really was not. The day after the ship went down diver dove to the wreck and reported that the visor was still attached or separated and lying very close tot he wreck, but an entire full week later that statement was revised to say that the visor was found a full mile from the ship. Also, the official report stated that when the visor allegedly came off, it pulled the entire ramp down exposing the car deck fully to the water.
facts: swedish court confirmed russian military equipment was trasported(smuggled)on the ship. survivors told the ramp was closed while she sank, some even climbed to water from it, official report stated the opposite-explaining the fast sinking. a hole was discovered on the bottom, just google for the picture. after that tons of sand covered the area, on a muddy seabed?! about 9 crew members confirmed rescued, were deleted from the list. sweden and russia quickly forbidded any investigation...
One of the first ships to arrive at the scene was MS Silja Europa, largest passenger ferry 1993-2001. I travelled with her in 2008.
Felt a bit eerie standing on the helicopter platform knowing that 14 years earlier soaked survivors of Estonia had been winched aboard on that very platform.
HEY the radioman on M/S estonia was a friend of my family, he died on that ship! but still, just 3 years of independence and ESTLINE used the ship only for a year so good point

Well, a great part of the Scandinavian and baltic population cares about the ship, and why it sank, people often prefer to know what happened to their perished relatives and friends.

CapdevillaSerrano, that is not Silja Line's ferry. It's Estilne's ferry called Estonia. The fact why it has Silja Line colours is that it was Silja Star for the year 1990. Before that it was Viking Sally since 1980.
I did'nt mean that M/S Estonia was Silja Line when it sanked, I just answered the question "Why is that ferry name estonia when there are sweden flag " by ainmartin, Just an missunderstoding. P.S. If my english is wrong, I'm sorry.
why not? it's just a name... and the flag of a commercial ship doesn't mean much nowadays, anyway.
Estonia doesn't even mean Estonia in Estonian (it's Eesti), but it has been used as a name for things somehow connected to Estonia or Estonian culture.
Estonia is, for instance, also the national opera theatre and concert hall in Tallinn, a piano brand, a race car brand... and was given for that ferry as well, although the choice may have been a disastrous one in that case.
The swedish flag at the mast above the bridge indicates the destination of the ship. so here the ship was on the way to Sweden. the flag at the end of the ship shows where the ship is registered
I was on another ship in about the same area that night. I dont remember very much because of my young age back then, but my parents have told me it was extreme weather, the worst boattrip they have experienced.
What a beautiful video. My parents friend died on that ship and I personaly investigate what happen with some help from my dad and I'm convinced that the bowvisor did not sink the ship.
My best friends grandmother died. Btw its not a stupid ship. The ship was perfectly fine. There was some kind of explosion that opened the frontgate so the water poored in. I remember they told us on the news at first. But then they changed the versions so everyone said different things and no one knew what to think. The ship transported illegal weapons from slavic countries from time to time. Which could explain why they poored concrete all over it. No one is even allowed to dive down there.
Actually it is only the citizens of the countries that signed the Estonia treaty that are forbidden to dive at the site of the wreck. For instance it is perfectly legal for an American to dive in or around Estonia.
And concrete has not been poored on the wreck, check out the Estonia fact site that the Swedish government has put online, this was only suggested, but never carried out.
However I certaintly agree with you on the part about an explosion in the hull of Estonia.
it's pretty strange to think that if that sank because that big gate in backside broked then that same thing can happend to other ships too! by the way i'm going to Estonia with some "tallink" ferry after couple days maybe and in that ship there's also gate in back what looks like that and also there is some gate in front. so it can sink too xD because there have been some crazy storms so much now. today some lamps outside didn't work because trees had falled on power lines and roads xD
Estonia sank because the frontgate was blown open. Its a really strange mysteri, and I hope that the governments will tell us one day what really happened and why.
Remember, if you are travelling with Tallink, are you also travelling with the former Estline, who owned the Estonia ferry. Estline banccrupt in 2000, so the owners sold the company to Tallink. (Estline bankcrupt because of economical problems after the Estonia accident).
they have. the reason is because it was the worst storms since 1533 ( think!) in Baltic sea, were a storm killed 4000 danish sailors and devastated the fleet. So the front of the ship just collapsed and disappeard into the sea!
Since 1st July 1995 all citizens from Sweden, Finland and Estonia risk even a prison stay, if the come to near to the point where the disaster happened.
And norwegian divers recovered a piece of steel from the sea bottom. But Börje Stenström, a member of the commission looked at the piece of steel and throwed it back in the water. He said, the pin had been too heavy for the helicopter. It weighted only 40 kgs.
This seems to be no accident. The officials want to keep a secret.
With naive I mean the ones who are quarreling about the building time or the name of the ship.
The swedish, finnish and estonian government are involved in this and try to smother the facts. Especially for the relatives and friends of the died people is this a scandal.
The swedish sea authorities started with covering "Estonia" with stones and concrete. Only after massive protests by Swedish citizens they stopped this. Other countries invest money to clarify the cause!
Some children or relatives from people who died in this night, are writing here. This makes the catastrophy strange in some way, because "it comes so near". But: Many comments are very naive. It were better to ask the right questions.
Why was not every corner of the shipwreck filmed? Why had the key witnesses been ignored? Why should the "Estonia" be covered by a 35 million EUR expensive coat made of cement and stone, if the salvage of the corpses by a diving company will cost only 5 million?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
There was no bombs or anything like that on the ship. Reason why it sank was because the captain had full speed on while it was storm outside. The same would have happened to Silja europe but thank god there was a captain with brains.
Wrong. I have studied lots of things about this ship. It was built in Germany and was designed to go in "skärgårdstrafik" (near coast) and not open seas. The front of the ship wasn't built for that. Scary facts, indeed!
excuse me, the visor had the "Atlantic" bottom lock and you say that it brok off in case of 8m high waves? You probably don't know that the "Atlantic" lock should even hold the storm in Atlantic Ocean, not just break in bad weather in Baltic sea?! Think 'bout it, man;)
i woke up about 6 am after the tradegy, the weather was one of worst ive seen and saw my mom cryin like hell... my father was a great man and its really hard to live with that
I've been in this ferry 1 year before tragedy. Casino, shops, restaurants etc. And crowds... People everywhere. So painfull to think about that now...
When it happened, St.Petersburg's rescue team ask Estonian border instantion to let them come and with special equipment pump air inside and take ship back from the bottom. They need just couple hours to come there. Hundreds were still alive, because all flours automatically blocking in such situation. Estonian gov. refuse for having help... They decide better play "independent and proud" than to save someone life's. Bloody politics.
Sorry to everyone who lost his realtives or friends there

I did'nt mean that M/S Estonia was Silja Line when it sanked, I just answered the question "Why is that ferry name estonia when there are sweden flag " by ainmartin, Just an missunderstoding. P.S. If my english is wrong, I'm sorry.
CapdevillaSerrano 2 years ago
Estline was an swedish company.

Why is that ferry name estonia when there are sweden flag
ainmartin 3 years ago
why not? it's just a name... and the flag of a commercial ship doesn't mean much nowadays, anyway.
OnuOliver 3 years ago
The swedish flag at the mast above the bridge indicates the destination of the ship. so here the ship was on the way to Sweden. the flag at the end of the ship shows where the ship is registered
crado 3 years ago
Why does Silja Line have a swedish flag cause Silja Line is from Finland?

What a beautiful video. My parents friend died on that ship and I personaly investigate what happen with some help from my dad and I'm convinced that the bowvisor did not sink the ship.
vikingline01 3 years ago
the "second visor" was never opened, some eyewhitnesses said.. that's why people believe it was a hole some where else.. bec i sank so damn fast..

Gunnar125 3 years ago
No explosion, the waves breaked the front loading door, it was about six meters waves that night, and that's the true story.
The explosion everyone heard was the visitor that hit the bulbe when it fall off
ManenQ 3 years ago
Could be so. I'm still not convinced it wasnt an accident though. And neither are the reatives of the victims in Estonia.
Gunnar125 3 years ago 2
Actually it is only the citizens of the countries that signed the Estonia treaty that are forbidden to dive at the site of the wreck. For instance it is perfectly legal for an American to dive in or around Estonia.
And concrete has not been poored on the wreck, check out the Estonia fact site that the Swedish government has put online, this was only suggested, but never carried out.
However I certaintly agree with you on the part about an explosion in the hull of Estonia.

it's pretty strange to think that if that sank because that big gate in backside broked then that same thing can happend to other ships too! by the way i'm going to Estonia with some "tallink" ferry after couple days maybe and in that ship there's also gate in back what looks like that and also there is some gate in front. so it can sink too xD because there have been some crazy storms so much now. today some lamps outside didn't work because trees had falled on power lines and roads xD
isokessu 3 years ago
Estonia sank because the frontgate was blown open. Its a really strange mysteri, and I hope that the governments will tell us one day what really happened and why.
Gunnar125 3 years ago
Remember, if you are travelling with Tallink, are you also travelling with the former Estline, who owned the Estonia ferry. Estline banccrupt in 2000, so the owners sold the company to Tallink. (Estline bankcrupt because of economical problems after the Estonia accident).

If this is accident, THEN WHY THEY DONT PUBLISH THE REASONS?
arsenal92 3 years ago
they have. the reason is because it was the worst storms since 1533 ( think!) in Baltic sea, were a storm killed 4000 danish sailors and devastated the fleet. So the front of the ship just collapsed and disappeard into the sea!

There was something about the entrance to the rare deck, the car deck. It wasnt shut right, and started to take in water.
ArtcoreOfLs 3 years ago
it was closed correctly but lock-system had problems and front visor fall apart

Other countries invest money to clarify the cause!
ddddde2 3 years ago
Some children or relatives from people who died in this night, are writing here. This makes the catastrophy strange in some way, because "it comes so near". But: Many comments are very naive. It were better to ask the right questions.
Why was not every corner of the shipwreck filmed? Why had the key witnesses been ignored? Why should the "Estonia" be covered by a 35 million EUR expensive coat made of cement and stone, if the salvage of the corpses by a diving company will cost only 5 million?

yes, and if the shipwreck would ascended to vertical position, the bow of a ship and almost half of it would be above waterfront.
the infamous ship was 155 meters long.

There was no bombs or anything like that on the ship. Reason why it sank was because the captain had full speed on while it was storm outside. The same would have happened to Silja europe but thank god there was a captain with brains.
cashew1337 3 years ago
Wrong. I have studied lots of things about this ship. It was built in Germany and was designed to go in "skärgårdstrafik" (near coast) and not open seas. The front of the ship wasn't built for that. Scary facts, indeed!
pajon82 3 years ago 4
That makes sense, since it first travelled between Vasa and Umeå/Sundsvall, and Stockholm-Mariehamn-Åbo/Nådendal.
BitLord 3 years ago
excuse me, the visor had the "Atlantic" bottom lock and you say that it brok off in case of 8m high waves? You probably don't know that the "Atlantic" lock should even hold the storm in Atlantic Ocean, not just break in bad weather in Baltic sea?! Think 'bout it, man;)

I've been in this ferry 1 year before tragedy. Casino, shops, restaurants etc. And crowds... People everywhere. So painfull to think about that now...
jevgenium 3 years ago
When it happened, St.Petersburg's rescue team ask Estonian border instantion to let them come and with special equipment pump air inside and take ship back from the bottom. They need just couple hours to come there. Hundreds were still alive, because all flours automatically blocking in such situation. Estonian gov. refuse for having help... They decide better play "independent and proud" than to save someone life's. Bloody politics.
Sorry to everyone who lost his realtives or friends there
