@julkerreviews what do you mean it didn't have any protest or peaceful demonstrations? The opera shows the building of Tolstoy farms, production of the Indian Opinion, the registration card burnings and the march of the miners.
I also saw it on the 19.11. in the cinema. Fantastic music, I like act II the most, but the personage in the window abowe the stage (Tolstoj, especially King) find disturbing.
Saw the Met HD performance yesterday. Compelling. Richard Croft has the most beautiful tenor voice I can imagine. The harmonies of the music match the harmony expressed by Gandhi, et al. The opera is like a long litany, sometimes hymnlike, but always harmonious - even in conflict.
This was quite possibly the most repitative and boring thing I have ever heard and watch at the MET HD theatre, I'm sorry but I'll stick with Mozart, Donizetti, and Rossini they at least don't copy and paste a 30 sec clip for 20 min.
@JulkerReviews the you obviously don't understand the history behind it. it's very meditative. all the words come from the Hindu religious text. Religious texts should be repeated and meditated on, not just sung in pretty melodies with no meaning.
@wisniewz repeating something for 30 min doesn't make it meaningful, that's a pretentious way of thinking. The opera didn't have any protests or peaceful demonstrations, without the playbill, everyone would be lost.
Donizetti was a great composer, but he did not have an original style. He used trope after trope from composers past. Also, the melodies in his arias rarely accurately reflect the mood of the story at the time.
Showing off how complex your harmonies can get, and how many different melodies you can cram into one aria doesn't make it meaningful either. It's about the context, which Philip Glass clearly understands.
The way you denigrate Glass suggests you can do better. Can you?
I've just seen it via «Met Live in HD». It was amazing. I wish I could just arrange the visas, buy the airplane tickets and see & hear it with my own high definition eyes & ears & heart.
I've loved this music for many years. Would be a dream to see it live. Think this was the first classicl music I bought. This n Einstein on the beach. And both on Vinyl.
@wendo123 Nov. 17 in movie theaters around the US/Canada. Live broadcast from the Met. Really looking forward to it. There is also an encore performance being shown in December.
And then there is the Einstein on the Beach tour 2012/2013. HOORAY!! :)
@sirmercutio99 I saw Ahkenaten done live in Long Beach, CA earlier this year. Satya at the movies today, and then Einstein will be next year live in the US and Europe. :) It's a good time to be a Philip Glass fan. I don't know of any other Ahkenaten performances on the horizen. Philip Glass's website is surprisingly unhelpful when it comes to keeping track of such things, but it's worth crawling through once in awhile.
I was fortunate enough to hear the production at NYC's Met Opera house last year. I took a friend who knew nothing of Glass and was concerned she wouldn't like it. At intermission her eyes were glistening and during the ride home she described the experience as 'transformative'. She is going to see it again at the Met in November and I will see the simulcast with my wife who is luke-warm on Glass. Here's hoping!
i'd spent 30 years thinking Strauss's Elektra the peak of opera in the 20th century, but after attending Satyagraha in London on 30 April 2007 and again on 19 March 2010, i'm left in awe of this work - the moral authority is unlike anything else i've encountered
I saw this in Chicago maybe 25 or more years ago, the San Fran Opera production. I went only because it was on my season package and I an stand waste.
It was the most amazing operatic experience of my life. I still reflect on it often.
At moments I was in tears; sometimes they were tears of anger at what it was bringing out of me, as in the confrontation at the public park; sometime of bliss, such as that awesome evening song.
I saw this, like performed here, in Stuttgart 20 years before, as well as "Akhnaten" (premiered in Stuttgart, my greatest expirience ever in the opera) and "Einstein.....". Glass is the most interesting among living composers. To hear him must be the same thing as to hear Wagner or Verdi (yes, cuoredeinidi!) more than 100 years before.
So, the main idea behind this staging is to perform actions that produce as much random and distracting noise as possible? I sure hope the Met rethinks this a little.
Currently there are no shows right? P.Glass's website has little information. I'd like to keep up with the schedule if the production will be on in the US or EU. I want to see this in person. Thanks for posting the video, simply lovely.
I saw this last night. I really wanted to love it. I got pretty unbelievably bored I'm afraid to say. Listening to the music now it is quite nice, but for somehow the show didn't touch me. Avatar was definitely a better 3 hours by some margin. The puppets seemed ill judged as did the finale. I dunno, not convinced at all but glad to see others enjoyed it so much.
Saw the London 07 prem..friend took me so bought &é tickets and took 11 other friends;;;fantastic;;;;then on a flight to NYC Met Opera saw it twice;;;;Now 6th March 2010 ENO LONDON with 11 guests again;;;;obsessed I know but this is sublime hypnotic transforming...open up and enjoy xxxx
the powerful experience of the truth: tagore....gandhi....luther king...they experienced it by philosophical-political activism, and glass tried to express this by this beauty piece of heaven..
20 to 4:40 I see them here assembled ready to fight seeking to please the Kings sinful son by waging war. And thus addressed by Arjuna Krishna brought that splendid chariot to a halt between the two armies. In front of Bhisma and Drona and all the rulers of the world he said Behold Arjuna these kinsmen assembled here. And the Prince marked on each hand relatives and friends in both armies. Seeing them all his kinsmen thus arrayed Arjuna was filled with deep compassion and turned to Krishna
You can get the soundtrack sounding version on the Songs from the Trilogy CD. It is just about as good as this. It retains the haunting, acoustic feel. I bought the cassette years ago and was pleased. I got the CD about 4 years ago and was much more pleased. Still doesn't quite compare though, but you should be happy.
I had the opportunity to see the production at the Met in NY last week, and it was incredible. It left me feeling inspired and speechless. I have seen many operas before this (and as a cellist, performed in many opera orchestras), and this was my favorite opera production of anything to date. Satyagraha is truly an amazing piece of work -- and the production really did it justice. Lovely.
You nay sayers cannot be serious. You have to let yourselves go, feel and think-almost meditate. So much of it is so beautiful and very difficult to sing. Ah, you must all be engineers if you don't feel this.
The music is, of course, amazing... but the sound recording on this DVD is appalling. And the staging really, really sucks. I was lucky enough to see Satyagraha at the ENO last year, staged by Improbable Theatre, and it was incredible - a million times better than this. It's going to be at the Met in NYC in spring '08. Catch it if you can.
Stuttgart State Opera also filmed their mind-blowing production of Glass' "Akhnaten" for TV release in 1990 and have kept it in their vaults since then due to a change in management. Can you imagine?
