@SomethinWild I reckon the X2N-7 could be a bit too hot for a Djent style sound. But, of course, there's a lot you could do with compression and EQ to achieve the djentiness, even with an X2N7. Might be easier with something like an Evo-7, though. Possibly also the D-Activator. That's quite hot, also, but very very defined.
The X2N7 certainly doesn't lack definition. However, I'd almost recommend an Evo7 or D-Activator 7 for that style of soloing in the bridge pos.
I've got a custom Kent Armstrong pickup in the neck position, which is simply gorgeous. I've also heard of a lot of people using a DiMarzio Air Norton in the neck to go with an X2N in the bridge.
hey man great cover!!!!! btw does the X2n7 is great for soloing petrucci style, adagio style, scar symmetry style, or it compromises power with definition?? (super heavy metal), also!!! wich pup are you using in the neck to compensate the x2n7??? thanks :D
Its different. Qualitatively its on a par. But its a passive pickup, and hence has different characteristics than either of the actives you mention. On a scale of brutality, I'd say it at least matches the others, if not wins out by a small margin.
@bcrich2690 x2n 7 all the way. dont have to route your guitar body to put them in, never have to change the battery (because there is none!), sound way better on a clean and distortion channel, theyre way heavier, and are only $80 vs the $110 for the EMG's and $180 (horrible price!!!!!) for the blackouts. theres no way to lose with the X2N7.
@deathcore1239 i know cuz i have a 81 in my 6 string and love but i asked cuz you with 7 strings you proly will getting kinda muddy sound you know but then again it could be my half stack haha
would you say those pickups are pretty good and clear? do they handle a lot gain well? would you think they are good for death metal/ deathcore? THANKS!!
@KmS69GlItChErS The X2N 7 is a VERY hot pickup - so great for huge distortion. I'm very happy with it as far as clarity, punch and dynamics are concerned, although I'd also urge you to try the D-Activator 7 also, as I've heard many good things about them too ;)
In this vid, I still had the stock pickup in the neck, which sucked, so I changed it out for a Kent Armstrong custom pickup which my good friend Patrick Hufschmid provided me with :)
I just like the way Leper sounds down there - plus, I'm able to futz around with the vocal melody more that way ;) But I fully understand if it just sounds completely wrong to some ppl - its all down to personal taste in the end ;) \m/ \m/
and since commenting/rating is disabled on your sanitarium video i'll tell you here that that was absolutely the best cover i have ever watched ever, love your voice and use of the loop station, i bow to thee
ive been thinking of getting this guitar with an x2n 7 in the bridge and a duncan JB 7 in the neck. im just concerned about the tuning stability of the trem. how is it?
I've been amazingly unlucky so far and have missed Metallica every time they've played near me :( :( :(Just seen 'em live on vid/dvd - hopefully I'll still get to see 'em though ...
Just played at a mates bday party with a drummer friend of mine doing mainly Metallica covers - we did puppets - will have to see if the vid recording is worthy of putting on YouTube - otherwise we'll have to try and do a dedicated recording of it for here :D
i think i saw on ur creeping death vid that u live in south germany, if u do then thats asweome
Metallica are still on tour at the moment, so they could still be possibly doing european gigs. Hopefully ill see the puppets u did, its bound to be asweome, cause that song, and u r asweome
well, if you dont get to see them this tour, then dont wory, i am almost 100& postive that they will write another album, they still have songs from death magnetic that didnt make the record, liek 'Shine' for example
Im guessing in about two years we will see a another album
I'm really hoping they don't wait so long to release their next one - I love the direction they took with DM and hope the continue it on their next release :D \m/
To me, St Anger sounded like they just didn't bother - threw together a bunch of riffs and called it a song ... but that's just my opinion LOL It sold a hell of a lot more than any of my shit's ever going to sell hahaha \m/
But there were a bunch of great riffs on there, and I just feel that if they'd pared it down a bit and tightened it up, it could have been a *really* great album ... (plus, the production could have been a bit better ;))
i agree on the production, amd there are some killer riffs in there
Bob Rock isnt bad at wat he does, after all he did produce the balck album, but turning to rick rubin was a great choice and not at all stupid. If he did there next album, it wud be asweome.
I love the fact they brought back an instrumental, because they are asweome at doing that. Orion is their best by far!
Haven't had a chance to try the SC yet - but to be honest, the 'middle' pickup looks like it would get in the way of my playing (I *hate* pickups in the middle position).
All I can say is that the RG 1527 is a great guitar for its price point IMHO.
What you do with these lyrics is awesome, i've been thinking of singing "cookie monster" vocals in metallica's songs like you and it sounds great sometimes. I'm seeking to learn these vocals close to your style, how did you learn them ? I'm a complete newbie :) how long have you been playing btw?

From a technical point of view, they should be as good as each other, so its really down to taste in tone - maybe see if a local music store has guitars with either of those two in and try 'em out and just get what sounds better to your ears \m/
hey dude i just want to ask you on the edge pro bridge on that model, i'm thinking of getting the same model but i don't have a lot of experience with ibanez is the edge pro of good quality compared to a floyd rose? i'm also planning on changing pickups to SD blackouts or SD distortion mayhem, do you think it would soung good with a basswood body? thanks and nice playing cheers mate
Personally, I *love* the edge pro trem. However, I can't compare it to an original Floyd, as I don't have any guitars with one of them on :( Similar story with the SD pups you mention - haven't actually tried any of those, so couldn't really comment on them. I know that other ppl are using the Blackouts with Ibbys and seem very happy with them - but then, you probably knew that already lol
A lot of players here puts on that Ibanez 1527 guitar some DiMarzios or Samyor Duncan picups.Just would to know,is that nessesary to change picups, and how good would sound guitar with their natural picups?
The pickups that were in there originally were REALLY bad (in my opinion). Bad harmonic response, flat sound, not hot enough for some good METAL ... but then, the guitar is comparatively cheap - thankfully they didn't compromis in the build quality, but simply put in cheap pickups - which are easy and cheap enough to replace :)))
This guy has really nice gear. Except for that weak azz drum machine, it needs more bass. WOW! Great voice on this song! Much better than the other songs, sorry if you were sick. OOPS I spoke to soon! Oh except on the Chorus,....unless, wait,... are you trying to sing bad , are you goofin on James? is that why its goofin on us! But I really like the voice on 3:00 mark, very good. and the beginning, well done.
Just to let you know - there's no drum machine on this or on my Harvester vid - what you can hear is me making weak-arse drum sounds with my mouth lol ;)
Oh. My bad. Hey man , I really just wanted to say that its cool you are so confident, because you are good. I just think you would be way better singing instead of that raspy deep weird thing you do. It sounds almost like somehting somebody would do that can't sing, or is afraid to.
Hey man, no worries :) Its just a way I really enjoy singing - some people like it, others really hate it lol. But I also really enjoy 'just singing' - in fact, in the Jazz band I play in I really get to live out the singing part - so I like to go kind of nuts on vocals when I'm doing my Metal stuff hehehe
Principally there should be no problem. I say principally, because I don't know for sure what the dimensions of the pickups in the C-7 are, but you can always get body routed to fit the pickups if necessary. I've only had to do that once, though, and that was with a custom pickup. The replacement on the Ibby was a straight swap with no funny business ;)
That's what I call Divine Heavy Metal!!! I try head banging and nearly fall right down. I'm looking at buying that Ibanez model, cool tone and riffage!
I'm really happy with my 1527 - well, after I put a better pickup in the bridge pos hehe ;) But the playability is one of the best of the currently available 7 string production models IMHO.
IMHO its important to practise with the guitar in the position you want to play in live - so for me, I've always practised standing up and hence I'm not as good sitting down lol ... however, since playing with 8 string guitars, I've had to hike the guitar up a bit and that's more like the position its in when sitting - so maybe when standing, try having the guitar higher up. Other than that, make sure to practise standing more often ;)
OMG, its true what they say that taste is like an ass, everyone's got one. This was a bit on the strange side. I think you have the talent for singing but you should consider lessons to harness you clean voice, its strong but I'm sure you could get more out of it. your growling was pretty cool though. It'd be much cooler with only candles lighting the room don't you think?
I cant sing at all myself so I dont mean to diss you, just commenting.
Hey dude, nice cover and sweet gear!! I have a question. How do you like that X2N on you RG1527?? I have the same guitar and I'm looking to get a new bridge pickup for it. Thank you!
I think for sheer brutality, the X2N7 is the way to go. Its got good harmonic response, is very well balanced, but can be a bit difficult to control under high-volume ;) If I was getting a new pup for my 1527 today, though, I'd probably try out the D-Activator 7. I've also got an Evo7 in my K-7 ... and I LOVE that!
IMHO the Evo has better ... but not by much ;) Overall, I find the Evo a much more balanced pickup - but its not as brutal as the X2N ... just my opinion, though ;)
No Clive im not a good player i just try to start playng, but im proud that this guitars are made in poland and they are know on the rest of the world . all the best 4 u man!
Yup - I saw them at the Frankfurt Music Fair and also check out their web site now and again. BEAUTIFUL guitars ... I'm sorely tempted to ask if they do 8 strings too ... but I'll have to save up a while first :)
I'm lovin' the X2N 7 ... great harmonic response, really savage tones ... if I had to pick a flaw, it would be the sheer output of the thing - its a bit tricky to control when playing v.loud - but doable ... definitely worth trying!! :) \m/
ive never heard that song done that deep before. feckin savage man. vocals are eerily like josey scott. id love to hear the whole thing with solo and backing.
Cheers man! \m/ Gotta admit though - never learned the solo :( ... I've mostly played in bands as the only guitar player, so never really got to play many solos and ended up just learning the rhythm parts ;)
The blue face is a VH4S from way back which I got 2nd hand for 1500 Euros. The Einstein is a new one which I got for ... erm ... 1600 Euros, I think? Something like that, anyway :) And the cab is a Diezel 4x12 ... back then it was loaded with Celestion V30s, but now its loaded with Celestion G12K100s.
Thnx man :) One thing to consider is that I'm not performing a carbon copy of the song, but my interpretation thereof :D I'm fully aware of the fact that its not a 1:1 to the original ;)
Thnx \m/ :) Yeah, its through the Vox ... just the built in effects. Unfortunately I can't remember the amp model I'm using, but I've just got some compression going on ... not sure about the EQ settings either :( Its just too long ago that I dialled that sound in ...
I've played some clean jazz stuff with it on my Roland Micro Cube; but that's not really a good indication of what it actually sounds like. One thing I will say is that I had to have the guitar set up in the local guitar shop properly before it played really well, but now it plays very very well indeed ;) Also: swap out the pups; the ones it comes with suck :( I only swapped out the bridge pup for an x2n 7 coz I'm only using it for heavy stuff.
hehe - I'm not *trying* to be anything - I am what I am - and part of that is a METAL head! A true metal fan is one for life, not just while he's all spotty and his balls haven't dropped yet. For your sake, I hope you manage to reach an age where yours do ... but I won't hold my breath lol
lol - this must be one of the most recurring questions hehehe! I guess its just a lifetime (I exaggerate - I didn't pop out of the womb moshing ... as far as I know, at least - its not like I have vivid memories of that part of my life lol) of practise, so I guess I must have intuitively figured out a way :) I kind of pull a face whereby I move my ears back a bit and hence increase tension or something. lol
I once started to figure out Soul Burn from DEI - its one of my favourite tracks of theirs :D ... thing is, I kind of feel that figuring out how to play something robs it of its magic when you subsequently listen to it, which is why I've been reluctant to try any Meshuggah stuff ... but one song couldn't hurt, so I'll give it a try at some point - can't promise I'll actually be capable of doing it, though lol :)
I much prefer passive pups myself because you don't loose so much of the dynamics - I think you can make the X2N sound more aggressive than an EMG 81, but by varying the attack you can also make it a lot less aggressive. So if you're really really used to playing active pups, then you may have to re-think your picking technique, but in the end you should be a lot more pleased with the result of playing passive pups ... just my 2 cents, like ;)
Thank you so much for the advice. I've been playing actives for awhile now, but I'm not afraid to relearn if I need to. I've been playing for 17 years now, and I just made the switch to tubes. You have to relearn how to play once you make the switch to tubes because they accentuate EVERYTHING. Once you're used to that, they are sooo much better.
You voice is a surprising contrast to the brutality of the 7-string. Somehow I like it, though...
Now I heard how this combination of guitar&pups sound in a Metallica kind of environment, would you recommend those for a djent-kind of style?
SomethinWild 5 months ago
@SomethinWild I reckon the X2N-7 could be a bit too hot for a Djent style sound. But, of course, there's a lot you could do with compression and EQ to achieve the djentiness, even with an X2N7. I'm really happy with my 1527 - well, after I put a better pickup in the bridge pos hehe ;) But the playability is one of the best of the currently available 7 string production models IMHO.

got any tips on how to play standing up?
im not nearly as good standing as i am sitting.
especially with palm mutes.
rainingblood0187 3 years ago
IMHO its important to practise with the guitar in the position you want to play in live - so for me, I've always practised standing up and hence I'm not as good sitting down lol ... however, since playing with 8 string guitars, I've had to hike the guitar up a bit and that's more like the position its in when sitting - so maybe when standing, try having the guitar higher up. Other than that, make sure to practise standing more often ;)
Hope that's of some help \m/

Thank you!
TheRenzonator 3 years ago
Hey man \m/
Thnx!! ;)
Cheers,
C
CliveJevons 3 years ago
So does the X2N have better harmonic response than the Evolution? Because I have an X2N.
seth3556r 3 years ago
IMHO the Evo has better ... but not by much ;) Overall, I find the Evo a much more balanced pickup - but its not as brutal as the X2N ... just my opinion, though ;)

Hi,
Yup - I saw them at the Frankfurt Music Fair and also check out their web site now and again. BEAUTIFUL guitars ... I'm sorely tempted to ask if they do 8 strings too ... but I'll have to save up a while first :)
Haven't actually played one yet, though - you?

ww3gecko 3 years ago
I'm lovin' the X2N 7 ... great harmonic response, really savage tones ... if I had to pick a flaw, it would be the sheer output of the thing - its a bit tricky to control when playing v.loud - but doable ... definitely worth trying!! :) \m/

Those vocals are low. LOL.. I like the vid. Good tone and gear choices. Keep it up.

A little too low for the style of metal it's inteded for. I used to also crank down my guitar strings to get that dark sound. It growls at you.

Are you playing through a VOX AD30VT? What effects do you use; that tone is lethal!
Ziaxool 3 years ago
Thnx \m/ :) Yeah, its through the Vox ... just the built in effects. Unfortunately I can't remember the amp model I'm using, but I've just got some compression going on ... not sure about the EQ settings either :( Its just too long ago that I dialled that sound in ...

twittheshred 3 years ago
I'm afraid I'd be lying if I said I knew lol!

Sozos9038 4 years ago
dude, how do you manage to keep your glasses on your head while headbanging?
Sozos9038 4 years ago 2
lol - this must be one of the most recurring questions hehehe! I guess its just a lifetime (I exaggerate - I didn't pop out of the womb moshing ... as far as I know, at least - its not like I have vivid memories of that part of my life lol) of practise, so I guess I must have intuitively figured out a way :) I kind of pull a face whereby I move my ears back a bit and hence increase tension or something. lol

really nice singing! I like the melodic parts as well as the shouting/screamin/growling/whatever^^
all your videos are just amazing! but could you cover something by Meshuggah?
7 and 8 string ftw!
greetz!
Atern0x 4 years ago
Thnx :)

Hey man, I'm using EMG 81s right now, but I'm thinking of making the switch to an X2N. Any thoughts?
IntensityStorm 3 years ago
I much prefer passive pups myself because you don't loose so much of the dynamics - I think you can make the X2N sound more aggressive than an EMG 81, but by varying the attack you can also make it a lot less aggressive. So if you're really really used to playing active pups, then you may have to re-think your picking technique, but in the end you should be a lot more pleased with the result of playing passive pups ... just my 2 cents, like ;)
Cheers,
C
CliveJevons 3 years ago
Thank you so much for the advice. I've been playing actives for awhile now, but I'm not afraid to relearn if I need to. I've been playing for 17 years now, and I just made the switch to tubes. You have to relearn how to play once you make the switch to tubes because they accentuate EVERYTHING. Once you're used to that, they are sooo much better.
IntensityStorm 3 years ago
I totally agree :) I too made the switch to all tube amps a few years ago, so I know exactly what you mean :)
