In the 40s, US animation was not just for kids. It was for everyone, and some of it was clearly for Adults.
But kids liked the cartoons praticulary, and people got it into their heads that it was for kids. So animation became, bit by bit, Kids Stuff in the states. No one person can be blamed on that. By the 1960s it was fully in place and stayed there, until the Japanese reminded the Americans that it did not just have to be Just for Kids anymore.
Some Clampett cartoons I can tell the animators, but can't tell who they are. I know the same guy did 'Eatin on the Cuff''s chase on the drinking glass and the 'Horsey, please whoa!' routine in Buckaroo Bugs...(I pull for Manny Gould)... the same guy seemingly did the hands at 2:49 and the Mailman in The Great Piggy Bank Robbery. Not quite mckimson and not quite Scribner...
I'm pretty sure that if the 1940s weren't so strict on the content in films that were going to be in general theaters the looney tunes would have been a lot like this with the language and stuff.
@gwrmarines "Both Style's" are good but, in different ways. "NARUTO" is viewed just as dangerously by the power's that be. Whether they be "So Called" Conservatives or Liberals, Parents Television Council (Right Wing ) or A Childhood Without Commercialism ( Left Wing ) because both "Chuck Jones" and "Hayashi Kishimoto" wish to make kid's and adults alike think for themselves and question the status quo. Censorship has attacked and damaged both....Chuck Jones is very highly regarded in Japan too!
Yes, that's Mel Blanc. And the exploding piano appears in a Bugs Bunny/Yosemite Sam cartoon also, with the exact same music.
And yes, the main character swears; even his name is military slang that stands for Situation Normal - All F***ed Up.. It's ludicrous to point to this as an example of a "more open" time; movies were far more restricted then than they are now. This particular cartoon was produced especially for the armed forces, and was never intended to be seen by anyone under 17.
But I would say that some of the content was "edgy". I thought that the Japanese with some of the worse shows of their anime had originated "edgyness" in hand drawn animation.
@MsSilentsiren Yes, it was Mel Blanc. Warner Brothers made this cartoon for the war effort. Earlier episodes of "Private Snafu" were written by a young Theodor Geisel (aka "Dr. Seuss").
@MsSilentsiren Yes, it was Mel Blanc. Warner Brothers made this cartoon for the war effort. Earlier episodes of "Private Snafu" were written by a young Theodor Geisel (aka "Dr. Seuss").
The Private Snafu cartoons are a hoot. They were made for the soldiers during WW2, and not shown to the general public, so they were a bit more risque and naughtier. Girl's breasts: "Booby traps!" Funny. Plus saying "the hell with it".
@TheSnowballDude Well, yes ... all female mammals do. You can get milk from female camels, horses, goats, sheep, and humans ... "Mammals" have "mammary" glands.
I remember clearly a Roadrunner vs. Wile e. coyote episode where there is that same exact gag with the piano, same tune too - done some 20 years later
@kingscottish its not censored becuase it was made for soldiers and i dont think it was every publicaly released. the private snafu films were kept secret
As a culture, America has been become less civilized as it gets older. Here, in World War II, there are cartoons that swear and depict sexuality. It wasn't a big deal because it was for soldiers and it was the goings-on of real life. Now, America is afraid to say "dang" on kid's shows, and most near sexually explicit acts are condemned. How could culture go backwards? We need to learn a thing or two from Europe.
Hold on, wait a minute.. backwards? Would you want your kids seeing this? I mean I know it was for adults, but just think. On Icarly they say boobs all the time and 'oh my god'. Its not something I would want my kids to be exposed to, and if saying dang and being mannered on television is going backwards than I suppose I like it that way.
Something this extreme I'd vere away from, for the very young viewers. But I do think that small bits like having actual guns instead of blaster rays and showing a bit of sexuality in shows would be a good thing. By denying the children these images, no matter what our opinion, that goes against our ideas of freedom. By not showing blood or guns or any sign of realism in shows, we are basically lying to them. They're going to learn sooner or later; why not sooner, so they can grow with it?
welll the problem is that kids ARE exposed to this type of material at a young age because of their irresponsible parents, which makes them think of things like sex very casually at a very young age thus increasing the teen pregnancies
That isn't the problem with the teen pregnancy explosion; it is the society we live in today. There isn't enough being done to make sure kids don't even try to experiment, because the outcome is often two ruined lives at an early age. Sexuality isn't being shown the way it should be. Instead of merely teaching it so children may be able to grow up with the concept, it is idolized and drives much of the television and music seen today. It's about showing it for education, not for entertainment.
i have a couple of things to say, first and foremost all countries can learn something from one another we are no exception but Europe could learn a thing or two from the U.S.(take Germany for example). people are also moving away from the bible which clearly states, no premarital sex, people are moving away from "pro life" to "pro choice" kids are also willingly or unwillingly being exposed to the sex industry as well which i have to say is very sad but true and i am doing all i can to end it
"Boob" can be used as either a slang term for the human female breast or an idiot. In the past, the slang for breasts HAS been considered obscene, but what merits that consideration seems to change from 1 generation to the next.

@thakatspajamaz I think americans consider sex in a very bigot and childish way: I mean, looking at tv programs like "16 & pregnant", they seem to know nothing about contrapcetion and abortion (why do they keep the baby even if they can hardly manage their life??acting like this, they fuck 2 lives, their and baby's!). Why can't they live it (sex) in a joyful and responsible way? Why they see it like a sin? Why sex is the only biological process surronded and tangled in thousands of paranoias?
@thakatspajamaz P.S. however, I don't like to generalize: I don't think ALL americans behave this way.
2 P.S. I don't understand why often they call "communists" people who prefers political/economical systems with social issues: I live in Italy and one of the (few, now that we are leaded by that pig named Berlusconi) things I'm proud is the welfare, that give us free medical services (of course, we pay it with taxes, but it's a great way for us to help each other).
@TheWhiteSuit In all fairness these cartoons weren't made for kids. Also why would there be sexual acts in cartoons intended for children? Or swearing for that matter? And how does the amount of sexuality in profanity found in cartoons determine how civilized a culture is?
@TheWhiteSuit well the thing is now adays is when somthing bad happens or somthing thats not suppose to happen they take extreme meaures to stop the problems, like school shootings, or planes being hijacked or saying certain words that are upsetting on tv
@TheWhiteSuit Culture never went backwards, it goes forwards. Show this to some one from the seventieth century and they will say it is just as messed up. Culture never got worse it just evolved.
@TheWhiteSuit I don't believe culture has gone forwards or backwards. The Private Snafu cartoons weren't just entertainment. They were made to educate soldiers on very important matters like personal hygiene and sanitation, keeping secrets, and staying alive under combat conditions. They used humor to get the message across, but the message was dead serious.
