We have tractors that do this too. It's really cool, but the problem is they lose connection a lot, and when they lose connection they dont steer anymore. Its fine if you're in a field, you're not going to hit anything, but if you were using it on a road chances are A LOT of accidents would happen.
@interlinkknight I think they use a combination of technologies for redundancy. Wi-Fi is certainly one of them, coupled with another radio transmission (BT?) and a video recognition transmitters too. A Computer in the car manage the reception and transmission to the followers (slave).
Some security procedures are also implemented : Disable on turn of master (with alarms), train changing lane, braking, speed limit etc...
Expect to see this technology on the market by 2020.
What if you are focused on your book or whatever and the car you following gets off of the motor way where you don't want to? Or if the car you are following looses control and crashes? You will follow it also then wouldn't you? Jaguar already has something like this.
This project is more than a couple of decades old. Volvo realize that is more difficult to convince drivers to trust the system rather than make the system work. As an engineer I understand where they are going with it but as a driver I don't like it. then again is not for everyone.
Yes, this kind of technology does have quite few bad sites.
It's a pretty innovative and exciting technology, but I don't know: Really, do we need this?
I mean behind on the road, means you have to take responsibility, as well as showing awareness and being careful. The technology is pretty robust when it will come out, but as all technology it has it's bad sites and problems.
For example my dad's car lost complete brakes because of technology failure,
the lower pressure zone from the car in front means a lower density of air right? so less air is available to cool radiator of the car, which is needed to cool the engine of the car. this is purely a theory though....tell me if you think otherwise. I am open to opinions
A better argument can be made that the hot exhaust air from the vehicle in front can decrease cooling efficiency of the vehicle following.
But again... these engines are not run at very high temperatures (compared to racing); so overheating should not be a problem. On the other hand, one can argue that slipstreaming can increase fuel efficiency!
Moreover, the running temperatures for max power (power band) for road cars is actually quite higher than cruising temperatures.
The aim of the road train is not to eliminate the driver completely, it is to eliminate the monotonous commute on a freeway/motorway where the driver is going a constant speed for a long period of time. Practically speaking, a driver would be able to 'attach' or 'detach' himself whenever he pleases.
those sciencetist don't drive do they??? u don't stay close behind a truck not unless when u r ready to pass them or u r in a truck too.... the amount of stone chip throw up by the truck will leave ur wind screen look like a teenager face full of pimple, and fail the warrant check, and make u 500 pucks poorer, and i m not talking about ferrari or benz wind screen,,,
awesome really good idea drafting + autopilot but i am a speed demon there's a reason why i have and drive 2 gas gazzeling turbocharged sport compacts if i cant smash on the gas in my twin turbo 300zx or single turbo cobalt once in a while why dry at all?!
take the bussss then!!!!! cheaper

@neodynium And for security reasons, we are thinking to add a mandatory service to validate the car health for its eligibility of the service.

would tailgating a truck for an extended period of time cause your engine to overheat?
