  • So the whole dance was a clever deceit of a child just so he could steal the bunny away from him, other than the good dancing that kind a cold

  • @d1beck1 bunny stealer

  • i wish people actually just break out in song and dance irl like this

  • just added to my favorites <3

  • He was so fabulous!

  • What I find SO amazing is just how effortless he makes it look! His grace and style are just AMAZING! Sure, we have performers today that can dance and stuff, and they can be AMAZING...but this is just...he moves so fluidly and makes it look like walking.

  • he can play the drums to....WOW

  • @sduhguitar not really. sounds added in post.

  • Comment removed

  • @devtrash: Well, yes, really. You're certainly correct that the sound was added in post production but Fred *could* play the drums though he used them, like pretty much anything else, as a prop in his filmed dance routines.

  • Man, I would give anything to work at that toy store...

  • i almost drooled...he is incredible

  • Good old times when youd go to a toystore and a charming old fella would come in and dance magically with you, and yeah, steal your bunny!

And hey, he didnt pay for it!

  • @gilzineto I think he gives the lady some cash at 3:50.

  • I could live a century and still not see all the things Fred Astaire is capable of.

  • It is sad that there are SOME actors and actresses that are multitalented, but their skills are no longer used to their full potential. Some can ACTUALLY sing (in my opinion Anthony Head OR Alan Cumming aren't that bad singers) , and some can Actually dance (Christopher Walken, Hugh Jackman) Sure they aren't as great as back in the day, but as I said, these talents aren't used in movies that much any more.

  • Love this! But if someone was to do this to a random kid these days he would be marked as a pedophile and he would never make it in the industry.

  • @Carimm60 disagree completely

  • Brilliant, he looks so light at 3:49 and 3:52.

He reeaally makes me wanna learn tap dancing.

  • I had to watch this like 3 or 4 times in a row just to begin to try to appreciate the genius in that 4 and a half minutes!

  • To have Fred dance for me, I would give a thousand bunnies ... actually that is way too low a number! thanks so much for showing this :)

  • Clips like that show that mankind IS indeed capeable of good entertainment. These days I suppose we're holding back most of it!

    I'm afrid it wouldnt sell.

You can be sure I'd buy what Fred is selling!

  • wow. that was true thievery. bravo

  • that kid just got owned, Fred Astaire style.

  • No, I don't like this =- cheating a kid of his toy! Great dancing but squalid ethics.

  • to be perfectly honest, a bunny that he didnt even own is a good exchange for this masterpiece. Its like a show for free.

  • This is just so amazing, the effort to put into this. First of all, this was all probably in one take, they couldn't really edit out any mess ups. Today singers hide behind fancy video editing, voice alteration, and so on. Theres nothing like the good old classics.

  • Bring this stuff back to our screens. And not on Channel 5. Stick it on primetime BBC. This is far more entertaining than anythig else on offer today. True talent and showmanship with a smile and a friendly canter. No egotism on show here. Just joy of dance and music.

  • After This It Won't Be:

"Like Taking Candy From A Baby"

    It Will Be

"Like Taking A Doll From A Kid"

  • He'd better hope that kid's mother never finds him after this

  • He never did pay for that rabbit...

  • @ViktorDragmire He does at the 3:50 mark.

  • soooo... where were the cops durring this?

  • damn he even knows how to play drums! respect master!

  • Just showed my grandma (80!) a clip of Ataire from "Swing time" (the one with the bojangles) and this one! Her comment to him: "THAT GUY WAS FUCKING AWESOME! HE DANCES EVEN BETTER THE BLACK-TAP AS SOME OF HIS BLACK PARTNERS IN THIS TIME! NOONE EVER COULD REACH HIM! ...." then she turned around and said ".........and Kelly of course." LOL My Resumé: Fred Astaire 10 points! Gene Kelly 9.5 ;)

  • Sad thing is - in most countries they don't even bother showing these films anymore - instead we have 'reality' crap.

  • Awesome!

Though does seem alot of hassle just to get one toy bunny XD

  • What a drummer!!

  • @MrDsigman yes he does, at 3:50 he runs over to the counter and gives the lady the money before returning to get the bunny

  • I heard that when Astaire replaced Kelly he changed Gene's routines to suite him more. It would have been interesting to see how Gene Kelly had played the part had he not not broke his ankle

  • @me323 Astaire could actually play the drums very well, don,t know about Kelly. I don,t believe Kelly ever did a number like this Astaire did several;-)

  • Is there anything he CANNOT do? ^_^

  • Remember when men settled things by tap shoes and song-and-dance?

  • Fred Astaire rules!

  • This man was amazing at what he did. He had pure talent and impeccable class. But what I find troubling is that so many people want this style of entertainment back. Yes this man was great, yes we don't make movies like this anymore, nor do we as strongly scrutinize the talent of our entertainers. But I don't think of it as a horrible loss, rather see the "filth" shown on modern television as a reminder of why films such as these are great. You can't enjoy a sunny day without some rainy days.

  • that's a long way to get that bunny:))

  • artists like fred astaire honed their craft in the music halls which don't exist anymore.now,we're obsessed with artists that are fashionable and rise to fame quickly who are the embodiment of their audiences dreams: to gain fame and riches with little effort.they sell an ideal that doesn't exist, that you too can be famous and live the american dream.

of course,i'm speaking in general. there are artists out there that are extremely talented.it's sad that so few are in the mainstream though.

  • I'd like to see Kesha try this........

  • My god, he just tricked that small boy for a stuffed toy bunny, and you're all praising him?!?!!

Just kidding, Fred Astaire can do whatever he wants.

  • i love a lot of films, i'm probably a a bigger fan of the art of movies themselves than specific films, these classics set an artistic standarde that has seldom (if ever) been passed. fred Astaire, the 2 hepburns, bogart and all the rest are legends with class who were dedicated to their art and this dedication shined in their films.

  • A hidden gem! Such class! I don't think there is anyone today who could even attempt this standard of entertainment! You could agrue that styles have changed- for the worse, I'd say. Michael Jackson & Prince are very good, but even together, still wouldn't add up tp the talent & class shown here.

  • @AbuAvital: Savion Glover...

  • Awesome!

the person who said that there is talent today that would match this standard. Luciano Pavarotti of modern times maybe. Darcey Bussell also maybe. Michael Jackson not quite but maybe. I can't think of another one and I love modern bands like Blur and think the kids from Glee are great and Robbie Williams and Neil Finn are all great but they just don't come up to this degree of freakish talent. Fred was gifted beyond belief. His voice makes me simply melt.

  • he sang great songs, played some piano, played some drums, acted in musicals and serious roles later, danced to perfection with the best, and choreographed his routines along with Hermes Pan...

That's why he lasted so long and remains an icon in the purest sense of the word....

  • A lot of the great drummers like Buddy Rich were tap dancers too. I think most of the comments on these sort of videos show a recognition that this golden age of entertainment has been supplanted by vacuous nonsense. There are great people out there just not in the mainstream anymore.

  • He's so damn awesome!!!!

  • To those who say that there is still great talent, please tell us who and where we can see them.

  • That guy is sneeeeaaaaakkkky.

  • This is good. I mean GOOD.

  • If people here would stop being so nostalgic and look at and listen to acts from today then they would see that there are some pretty amazing people today who if not beter than, equal to guys like gene krupa, astaire etc. Not sating they wernt great, but people should stop looking back SO much, its good, but don't over do it. There are some amazing people today who arent in the mainstream, and even these guys were. And today these guys with talent are not on the dame level as these guys on pop..

  • @Bosphorus92 if you dont mind me asking you to state 3 people with better talent then Astaire, Bing Crosby, Fank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr, and Dean Martin ect.

  • 1:26 to 2:26, no cuts just straight Fred.

  • Even the drumsticks he throws onto the floor land in time next to each other - Fred Astaire was pure class! RIP

  • That is talent and the people like Fred Astaire did not just wake up one morning and say this is what I want to do then video tape them selves and put it on youtube. and the next day become famous Fred Astaire and many others like Sammy Davis Jr, Frank Sinatra, and Louis Armstrong all have auto-biography's on how they be come who they are and I think that you should go to the library and take out them. They have more talent then anyone that does singing or dancing now-a-days

  • @SSTTEEFF55 Main-stream entertainment reflects main-stream society. If we are stuck with today's stars it's because society has changed. There are still really great performers btw but they don't appear in the main-stream media too much. Movies have suffered from TV a lot of course.

  • can you believe that fred astaire put on his application to be in his first movie that he could sing and dance 'a little' the man is awesome!

  • Fred Astaire will always be the best. good entertainment!

  • He is insane! So good!

  • this is amazing

  • Further proof that Fred may have been the most coordinated performer ever. His sense of rhythm is unerring and control of his body unequaled.

  • grandad showed me this film. i cried and smiled all the way through. love love love. :)

  • I love how he make fun of the poor kid at the end of the video.

  • thats pretty damn impressive

  • Absolutely awesome ! ( Awesome square ).

I really like Fred, especially in those demonstrations.

But, does anyone here knows the name of this movie ? I'd really like to watch it !

  • easter parade

  • It's Easter Parade. Hope you enjoy it-it's fun.

  • Amazing! Fred-genius, I love all his films!

  • Right down to the doors swinging shut exactly when they play the last chord. This whole scene is just amazing.

  • that was incredible!

  • un grandissimo, un figo in assoluto !

  • Dancing and Drumming both need bags of Rhythm - Fred was filled with Rhythm from the top of his head right down to the tips his toes - add to that his impeccable Style and amazing Showman techniques and thats why he was and always will be the greatest dancer this planet has ever seen!

  • watched it with a smile on my face and tears in my eyes...

    Thats what i call super-talent

All the artists in our century should watch it 1000 times to learn somethin from it because its not somethin like sing a song and earn millions of dollars..

    Good old days..

  • as a drummer myself, this video gives me reason to live.

  • Did you know that Fred himself was a drummer?

  • @PipamirSolo: And a pianist! Search YT for AF55Q9TwuCY which is the piano sequence from "Let's Dance". He play a really interesting syncopated piano number. Oh, and he dances a little too. ;o)

  • Fred Astaire= instant goofy smile upon my face!

  • Thanks for sharing! Great...

  • I'm totally convinced now that Fred Astaire could do ANYTHING!

  • I knew Fred Astaire was a talented dancer, but I had no idea he played drums, and putting them together like that was really clever! I'm saving this vid in my favorites list.

  • Wow... wow. I kept hearing that he played the drums and finally decided to look it up. I'm glad I did O_O

  • in broadway melodie 1940 he,s playing the piano by himself, tapping away and singing. He had a drumset at home! could play several instruments and wrote music, and still be hummble about it all

  • He had the talent & rhythm to be great drummer!

  • he was drumboogie78 :) :)

  • I wish I could distract people with long, happy musical drum solos.

  • he's not faking but he is playing to a track

and one of the most brilliant performances i have ever seen.

    made my week

  • it's the best example yet i've seen on how to relieve a child of something they think they want.

and i love the golf swing.

  • Guys how the hell is he "faking it" he recorded his taps and himself playing the drums, it's him doing all of it.

  • If you like the way Fred plays drums, you should see the way he golfs in CAREFREE.

  • Man, what the HELL happened to entertainment in this country?

This is a Masterpiece, by one of the Classiest guys ever. A suit and spats? What? Do you see this stuff any more?

    Why not?

The public is satisfied with no-talent bums like we have today, and entertainment like this is all but forgotten.

These songs, the music, the orchestras - this is when entertainers were GREAT.

Fred, and guys like him, set the standards that I feel will never be matched ~

  • @MarkR1957 Exactly

  • @MarkR1957 Gosh, I heartily second this, my friend. Entertainment has gone DOWN hill and I can NOT express my deep regrets that entertainment is not as it was in the 30's and 40's with people like Fred and Judy to keep it all going!!! We've all got to work to bring this stuff back! God bless you

  • @MarkR1957 I heartily second this, my friend. Entertainment has gone downhill something awful, and I wish to goodness we still had people like Fred and JUDY to keep this entertainment going! Entertainment is most certainly not as it used to be and I hate it. We need to help keep this alive in today's twisted culture. God bless

  • @MarkR1957 and I hate rap!

  • @clinicalpsychologist Not rap, you mean "cRap".

I agree - - it is not even music. The people who promote it and those who support it are part of the problem with the entertainment industry, and with this country in general.

Sadly, it seems there are very few individuals left who demand, seek out, and support The Higher Standard ~

  • @MarkR1957 cause people today mark entertainment like this as "gay" because they'll never be able to even dream about doing it, so they just shoot it down.

  • @MarkR1957 Arrogance, vulgarity, ill-manners and a lethal campaign against tradition (to be replaced by more practical way of thinking.

Westerners have two emotions they tolerate: Arrogance, and neutral. Any other emotion--especially delight--are to be emulsified and disparaged.

All American sitcoms for the past 40 years have shown Americans as arrogant (and our generations raised on their example), we are bewildered why the World doesn't think we follow traditions like 'manners.'

  • I love his exit! he's just like BAM, this is how i roll bitch

  • Lucky Kid!

  • Ok, but his stick trick at 0:56 isn't a fake.

So does anybody know how this is working. (some videos or somrthing like that...?)

  • Yes, he's simply great. I like to see (and hear) him singing, drumming, acting and tap-dancing!

  • It's so interesting and what this boy had a chance to play with Astaire is the best memory for his life.

Still, Astaire is always very fashionable!!

  • Wow! I could never do what he did at 1:36!!

Poor kid! He must really have wanted that bunny.

  • Does anyone (from the drummers) know, how this part at 2:27 work?

    thx

  • Fred is playing along with a pre-recorded track. In other words, he's faking it. You're seeing him play, but you're hearing the drummer play with the band. He does a masterful job of copying the parts doesn't he?

  • "Faking it" is not exactly the right word. I'd compare it more to lip-synching. But as you said he does a masterful job, and you know why? Because he really DOES KNOW how to play the drums (and piano, etc, etc..)

  • He recorded himself the drum part. In the bonus features, Ava Astaire his daughter say the he did it at home : So that's him we hear !

  • We could need him in our band... ;)

  • Wow...he really wanted that bunny ._.

  • One thing that I love about Fred Astaire (other than his mind blowing talent) is that he was so creative when he danced! Like nothing was his limit! (He choreographed alot of his own stuff, don't ya know?=)). I think that's so cool...put Astaire in a plain old room with nothing but, say, a water cooler and a song, and he'd be able to come up with something breath-taking. =)

  • Just mind blowing isnt it! You cant really grasp how much work was put in to that routine, or how much time he put into his craft to perfect it. I feel so... mediocre. Gener Krupa was in this movie somewhere wasn't he?

  • Good move with the bunny swipe

  • And to think when Fred had a screen-test the studio execs said something like: "balding, can't act, but can sing and dance....a little"

    Famous last words

Try to catch Fred and Rita Hayworth in

    "You'll Never Get Rich"

    Swell'egant stuff

  • And to think when Fred had a screen-test the studio execs said something like: "balding, can't act, but can sing and dance....a little"

  • Talk about syncopation! Fred had so much talent it was scary.

  • I can't believe I never thought to look for this before now! 0_0 I saw this on an MGM special once and never forgot it. I love Fred Astaire... He's so bad ass...

  • Fred was 1 of a kind. No imitations. What an artist, boy! How much I miss the quality and magic Hollywood had in those days. Nowdays is not quality. It's quantity down your throat. Until u choke....

  • nice liks fred mostly krupa and some ray badduc stuff in there too. fred could play drums anyone have any other fred drum taps he was one swingin cat. he could play drumset good too. he was a student of the great alvin stoller

  • Absolutely amazing.

  • He was the best! It's interesting...he assolutely needed to produce noise, one way or another! Artistic noise, rhythmic noise, but he was not able to keep silent! I think this is the reason of his greatness!

And have you noticed that he never went out from a room walking? He always ran.

  • Ohh, I don't know... I think he also had a capacity for beautiful stillness. Do a search for "top hat" and "sand," and watch the vid called "fred astaire." It doesn't complete to the lovely extent it does in the movie, but it nevertheless gives you some idea of what I mean.

  • I've seen the movie, and I love it: you're right, in that scene he was more "silent" and the scene is absolutely cute, but I think that he loved to produce noise....I repeat, his noise was rhythmic and artistic, but I think he loved it.

  • Thank you for posting my favourite part of the whole film. I once had an argument with a guy I worked with who has the nerve to tell me that Michael Jackson was a better dancer than Fred Astaire. Idiot. Classic work from a wonderful man

  • It's mesmerising! I can't take my eyes off it! O_O

    Sexy man too. xD

  • Fred was inimitable.

He plays those drums in "Daddy Long Legs" too.

And check the scene from "Carefree" where he taps and swings that golf club without ever missing a shot, or a beat.

They don't make 'em like Fred any more.

  • They only ever made 'em like Fred once. :D

  • Don't you miss the days when people had to had talent? Or was that way before our times?? lol

  • Just a flat-out amazing sequence. Tapping and drumming interchangably. Good times.

  • That was soooooo cute.

  • He and Gene Kelly really made tap dancing a great art.

  • Most. Rhythmic. Whiteman. Ever.

  • Lol. You can say that again. It was only inevitable that he could play the drums. And he plays the piano like a REAL pro!

  • I love Fred Astaire! Thanks for sharing this awesome clip!

  • My favorite part of the movie!!!
