Then again, when I drink beer I also want to get into an argument with the devil over my girlfriend with big tits whom he just consumed; but what do I know?
Agree with him on most other issues but the interviewer should have told him that most European males drink both beer and wine. I drink a lot of beer and I hate the military. Zappa confused effect for cause.
He questions and analyzes EVERYTHING. And on this one he's right in a way and wrong. I've been to many European countries and in only one did groups of men roam the streets and get violent. Packs of drunken wolves. That was Northern England and they were soccer hooligans. Otherwise, public drunkenness is usually displayed by Americans abroad and in the USA. He was such a friggin' genius. I mean who thinks like this? No one. Because they're probably drinking beer.
@eqsmooth No one is worse than a Brit on vacation if you want to talk about public drunkenness. Even Brits will tell you this. I've worked with them for the last 4 years at a British company overseas! My whole life is travelling and rarely do I see Yanks taking the piss in foreign countries. They may be clueless on vacation, but not brash public drunkards like the Brits
i think u tube makes people feel like they need to disprove, disagree, put-down people....... ( of course people will disagree, especially in a forum which, although is meaningless as far as true debate goes, is entirely based on OPIONION )
The beer consumption around here is not tied to that image. People that drink only beer tend to be (comparatively) mellow. These days it's vodka and energy drink combos that cause military behavior.
i see what zappas gettin at but thats not always true maybe americans just love their beer not everyone goes out and acts like an asshole thats the whiskey...........haha
lol NOW they dont sell that kind of stuf so dont brag about THE ZAPPA
i mean they sell it but they sell u a shitload more of things and lifestyles not just drinking beers with ur buds now there are more things that come with thechnology or shitloads of trends that can be sold via internet or tv
@MrMarcialjimenez True, but Zappa never lived to see those days because he died a couple of year later in 1993. He used to talk about trends during the time he was alive and this was one of the trend's prevalent at that point of time in the late 80s early 90s.
@timi0000 He explains that in this interview. If you do not agree that's just fine, you are entitled to your own opnion. Although, I find this culture prevalent in a lot of countries now a days, not only US.
@timi0000 riled up about what? Jealous? You're all over the map here. How about a little logic instead of blurting crap. Why would Zappa be jealous? and of what?
Because, if you haven't noticed many people act like assholes after excessive consumption of alcohol. Especially American males. Frank was never jealous of beer-drinkers, that is just plain stupid.
@TheFringefilms There's also that line in "Trouble Everyday" "and all that phony stuff on sports..." Hearing that I wondered what Zappa thought was so phony about sports. He's putting it into his song lyrics and he's talking about it here. Apparently, Zappa has something against people who watch sports. Anyway, we don't have to one of those YouTube arguments where both people keep going back and forth. I just think Zappa has an axe to grind with people who like sports.
I think Zappa is talking about the culture as a whole and not the chosen few artistic beer drinkers,,, he is also very biased in his opinion because I think he didn't participate in any kind of drug consumtion including alchohol with the exclusion of tobacco and possibly caffine. He was so focused on his music that those things were considered a hinderance and I think he saw people who were involved in the alcolhol and drug culture as waisting thier precious time.
He had a rule for the road which was no partying during the tour. It was business for him. He needed to make money so he could make more music. It was all about the music for him. Few people ever reach that type of conviction about anything in thier lifetime much less sustain it throughout their career and forget about retiring, if he'd of lived to be one hundred he would have still been creating music...
I think Zappa is right to criticize the dominant sentiments that surround beer-culture... But what about those who treat beer as a craft? What about those who recognize beer as a complex and, above all, delicious beverage?
I'm not talking about pounding back Buddweiser... I'm talking about beer that isn't mass-produced, and isn't marketed with sex/violence.
@MrGrizmint I think you might be my long lost twin. While I agree with what you've said, it appears that your username is a reference to smokeless tobacco, which removes all credibility. I'm not in the position to judge, though, as I'm dipping it right now.
@BobMillahhh saying that someone who uses chewing tobacco loses all their credibility just because they use chewing tobacco makes you never have any credibility to start with. i dont use chewing tobacco either...
@BobMillahhh That doesn't clarify what your name is a reference to... so I'm going to assume that you have no reason to be in a position to judge Frank Zappa either. The fact of the matter is, he's one of the more respected guitarists of all time, so I think he's entitled to speak on social issues with a little bit of leeway.
@MrGrizmint No, he is making a good, creative point, the only problem is that you are used to lady caca shit-talking with no brains, that is beautifully wrapped in chipmunk pop mentality.
@ididete i went to the moon. a real PhD student wouldnt brag about being a PhD student over the internet to some random person, but someone who went to the moon would.

Geez, if only he saw Aussie when they drank beer!!! Exactly as he described!! The majority of Australian beer drinking males, in particular the ones who drink the locally concocted garbage, behave like Neanderthal beasts with VERY inflated egos and a right to swear at and attack people at random. They urinate in public and ogle at and fondle women as if it's their right to do so. They like Rugby League, little shorts and talking tough.
Yeah...this has opened a can of worms. I fucking hate it!
..I don't believe that beer in and of itself can be blamed for behavior..whether good or bad; it falls back to the one consuming it. Blaming beer for actions is much like blaming a pencil for a mis-spelled word. Love and respect Frank Zappa;just disagree on that one point.
If it wern't for Rolling Rock I never would have joined the Salvation of Leather Daddies and Thunder Twinks; drinking beer always made my nails brighter, the leather sharper, and allowed for more urine, blood and bile from my bladder on our Prom King and Queen's heads.
Well...hops, the flavoring agent in beer, is the most closely related cultivated plant to cannabis. While it doesn't have the same psychoactive alkaloids, it does contain dimethylvinyl carbinol, which acts as a mild relaxant. Maybe it has the effect of relaxing your inhibitions and making you more susceptible to aggressive behavior - though, truth to tell, the meanest drunks I've ever seen where whiskey drinkers, and whiskey's made from sour mash with no other funny chemicals.
@edmundbloor A lot of Beer brands existed during that time and I can say it without being an american citizen. E.G- LA BEER, BUSCH, STROH’S, MILLER, BUDWEISER, HIGH LIFE, SCHLITZ, COORS, FOSTERS ( Australian but available in the US.
