  • The earth and all its peoples are insignificant from an objective universal view. There is nothing controversial about that because subjectivity is a requirement of significance.

However, for almost every inhabitant of the Earth, that planet could not be more significant.

Interestingly, the significance of Planet Earth decreases the further removed a sentient being is emotionally and physically from it, so an alien in another galaxy would probably hold our planet with little significance.

  • Frezned > Hank Green

  • u r annoying

  • @mauramercury Hank is a category of polymers which contain the ester functional group in their main chain. Although there are many Hanks, the term "Hank" as a specific material most commonly refers to William Henry Green (WHG).

  • he sounds like the doctor......

  • this video deserves A LOT more views!!! its amazing

  • Who the eff is Hank?

  • @mauramercury Dftba :-)

  • out of 7 billion people on earth, you are insignificant

  • "We are the cosmos made conscious"- Dr Brian Cox, with his time defying face.

  • 83 people are insignificant to me.

  • i get it dude.....................i get it

  • I think people use the insignificance argument as an excuse to be a psychopath. It's a totally meaningless argument employed to uphold status quo.

  • He should be a debater!

  • Carl Sagan...

  • Even if all of humankind happened on this one rock, why does that make it more significant that any other rock? Even if we were the only living planet out there, how can you justify saying that we are more important? It may be important to us, but no were are just another rock in a never ending sea of rocks.

  • @losetehgame you didn't watch the video.... or you are just trolling.

  • @losetehgame His point is that we're significant because that's the only point on the picture that merits a big white arrow, that out of all of the planets that we know of surely the planet that has life on is the important part. Say if there are a sea of never ending rock like you say, then the rock with life on is surely the important part.

  • @ChivalryFitz My point was WHY does it have a big white arrow, even if it earth has life and the ones around do not, why does that make it any different? Just another rock.

  • @losetehgame Because of the miracle of human consciousness/sentience. It has a big white arrow because we are here, observing it and living it. We're looking at it from the perspective from human beings because that's what we are.

  • Meh. Agree to disagree. You keep your optimism, I'll keep my depressing nihilistic existentialism.

  • Whoah from the thumbnail I thought you were Charlie McDonnell at first...(:

  • @linda8qin More like Michael Cera!

  • Nerimon!

  • vsauce!

  • I love your theories and your voice :D

  • I think there are multiple ways of interpreting that statement. I see it as, we are not the only thing in this extraordinarily large universe. To think that a small spec [Earth] is the only thing with intelligent lifeforms is completely absurd. To reiterate, we are insignificant because we are not the only thing in this universe.

  • dude, you missed the point.....

  • ... I think I'm in love with you. Or maybe just your voice. Nope.. it's you.

  • Hey Nerdfighteria :P

  • @gerardwhytelads DFTBA

  • that's why i believe in him (God)

  • ....I think I'm in love with you.

  • The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the Force.

  • Ahh, love this. Totally agree with you Tom!!

  • The word quibble isn't used enough. Thank you.

  • Amen. I'm so sick and tired of people telling me about the earth being measly, useless, and unimportant. If we're all so damn unimportant, why don't we just kill ourselves, eh? What's the point? To hell with that idea. I'm the only me there's ever going to be and that's pretty damn special.

  • @frezned I would interpret this premise differently. Regardless of what we do or think, the way we indeed tangibly change the universe is indeed very small, tending to virtual insignificance.

  • @TejasM14 If you only consider massive cosmic change to be significant, nothing significant has happened in millions of years.

  • @ReaperFromROBLOX Indeed. The point you make substantiates my point. If the birth and death of millions of stars and galaxies is considered insignificant, then that should all the more remind us that we shouldn't get too caught up with this constant materialistic and humanistic way of perceiving things.

  • So true, loved your point about volume and all of space. :)

  • You Sir, are winning at life.

  • This has made me cry *clap clap clap*

  • -_- lets get married.

  • Pardon me, but I respectfully agree... with you. I was thinking the exact same thing. I love your videos.

  • I like your argument much better...

  • You Sir, makes absolutely no sense!....BAZINGA!!!

  • Love it. Thinking like this makes my brain happy :)

  • tom, john green is the best selling author, not hank.

  • @pinksparkleprincess9 Click the link in the description to Hank's blog.

  • yayyyyyyyyyy

  • Oh My God. Mind blown.

  • dude... that is exactly how I think about things. weird...

  • mmmmm carl sagan:)

  • Comment removed

  • omg he talks way too fast and he gets off topic really quickly. ugh its so hard to understand him.

  • i think im going to play skyrim

  • My mind is blown

  • Claps for Frezned. :)

  • Well played sir.

  • "Pale blue dot"...you watch Carl Sagan. XD

  • guys I think he knows John is the bestselling author....also this is quite amazingly brilliant

  • I'm significant! :D

  • Aha you sound so posh xD

  • You remind me of JJ from Skins a little bit. :)

  • You remind me of JJ from Skins a little bit. :)

  • "New York Times bestselling author Hank Green".... *facepalm*

  • @FindGin He is.

  • @FindGin Perhaps a *headdesk* would of been more appropriate.

  • @FindGin I felt kind of bad for him.

  • @FindGin not understanding the joke... *headdesk*

  • @FindGin He's talking about why you are significant. And you know what he means, so who cares that he misspoke? As long as you know what he means. Pardon me but I respectfully disagree.

  • @starchington Hi. I see you replied to my comment. I posted that over 6 weeks ago, and since then I've gotten multiple replies to it. I wrote it after I paused the video at the 6 second mark, posted it, then resumed. I respect frezned's intelligence and did not mean to belittle his person in any way, I just found it humorous. I even watched a response video from Hank saying that frezned was correct, he just made the video from the future, where Hank is indeed... a NYT Bestselling author.

  • Story of the year.

  • Funny Group Reaction to Paranormal Activity 3, its my second fav vid LOL, after this obviously:)

  • I've posted a response to this and Hank's video on my channel. Tom will probably disagree with it, but it's not that big a deal. Just mind food. Tom eats ham, I eat turkey. No biggie

  • I was feeling insignificant, but I feel better now

  • BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH

if a tree falls in the Forrest does it make a sound

BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH

    i respectfully disagree

  • I love that you make star trek references. and i completely agree. yay!

  • You look like Michael J Fox.

  • Your face reminds me of colin firth.

    ....

    I like your face.

  • I like your voice :3

  • You made my ovaries tingle D:

  • I know people have already corrected you but JOHN GREEN is the author. Not his brother Hank. As a youtuber you should be familiar with the vlogbrothers, dude. And John is BRILLIANT.

  • @poppy627 Haha you can't spell. I hope the Tellytubbies burn your house down.

  • @SingularNinjular FUCK YOU YA CUNT!!!!!!

  • @poppy627 Do you realise "cunt" is not the slightest bit offensive? It's like me calling you an idiot: it can show dislike but never offend. I hope you're typing this from an internet cafe because the Tellytubbies really did set your hovel alight.

  • @SingularNinjular Your mum is a CUNT, thats why it does not offend you. You are too use to it.

  • I am Australian, and even I can't tell if you're Aussie or British...

  • New York Times bestselling author? I think you're confusing him with his brother, JOHN Green...

  • every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there – on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam." - Carl Sagan

  • "From this distant vantage point, the Earth might not seem of any particular interest. But for us, it's different. Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward,

  • philosophy 101

  • This is a beautiful response. Thank you. :)

  • wooo!

  • practise

  • :D your awsome

  • What the fuck is he talking about? All I heard is a fancy English accent.

  • @unknown19348 Australian accent

  • @unknown19348 What the fuck are you talking about? All i can hear is ignorance.

  • @unknown19348 What the fuck are you talking about? I can't hear you over his AUSTRALIAN accent.

  • Hank Green isn't a New York times best selling author.

  • Subscribe to me my videos r awesome

  • I can't tell if you're 40, or 17..

  • @lildiva810 he is 25-26

  • @lildiva810 hahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahaha true true

  • @lildiva810 my friend said anywhere between 15 and 20 :'D haha

  • Beautifully argued! I paused the video at the picture, before I heard your argument, and my first thought was, 'you could say we're insignificant, or you could say we're incredibly rare and precious.' I believe the latter.

  • we are insignificant if your talking about our significance against the whole universe. we cant change it, but it can change us.

  • The tree doesn't make a sound. It makes a vibration.. A sequence of air waves only converted to "sound" when they meet an ear drum and or microphone that therfore turns said vibration to sound.

  • Great video.

Unrelated - I learned that while a YouTube video is loading, you can play Snake! There goes sitting in boredom for things to hurry the hell up!

  • think about this. One ant? whatever. insignificant. MILLIONS OF ANTS. hooolyyy.... RUN! . Get it? Its how much the effects the other things in the galaxy. Think of the big picture and dont think abt urself all the time.

  • i would have never thought about that picture like that. You made a great point.

  • check my shit out

  • I'm in love with your mind

  • ur accent is WAY 2 strong, i think u should be arrested by how annoying ur accent is

  • @S20v2 The funny thing is (and I'm sure other Australians will agree with me) his accent is really subtle compared to other Australians. Do yourself a favour, do not visit if you find his accent annoying.

  • @S20v2 Agreeing with ImperialisVideos, I want to also add that how tragically rude it is of you to criticise Frezned purely on his accent. You're marginalising the Australian people, which is particularly rude considering how mild his accent is. I for one could complain about your grammar, but I won't.

  • Who is this person?

  • This guy is as funny as a prostate exam.

  • If you love your mom repost this to 20 other videos a girl didn't so her mom died 365 days later. I'm sorry I had to repost this because I love my mom.

  • I think I love you. And I'm old enough to be your mum.

  • That...was awesome.

  • How come I can't help but think of Geico's Gecko spokesman when you talk.

  • Man you are one well-articulated mofo.

  • trust me, i aint small

  • simply marvelous.

  • You talk fast... But yeah, some really good points there!

  • NERD FIGHT !

  • Also, it's like when you compare your problems to someone else's. Just because there are children starving in Africa doesn't make getting bullied acceptable whatsoever. Is your case as life threatening as being malnourished? No, but you've still got a problem regardless of how small it may seem when compared to something else.

In the end, our miniature life span on planet earth nor earth itself will count for anything. But that doesn't mean it's insignificant or unimportant.

  • I agree. Yes, in the long run, will my individual existence matter? Does any change I make, no matter how massive the intention, have an effect on the universe? No, maybe not, but looking at life from such a large perspective makes life pointlessly negative. My existence, hell, human existence is unimportant if you examine it in the grand scale of everything but in no way does that make life not worth living or earth any less vital.

  • At those who is wondering who he is. He's Jimmy from Raising Hope. Thats why I watched half of this insignificant video anyway...

  • @HunterReptileRooms A quick trip to imdb.com would have told that this is not true. This is Tom from Australia, not Lucas Neff the actor.

  • @bionicbunny3000. Hahaha! This video in insignificant. But your ramblings were significant enough to take valuable minutes off my day. Now my writing to your silly video has taken significant time off my day again. Can you please head out in the desert (preferably a large one) & turn into a grain of sand so you dont significantly waste others time again with your irrational rambling...

  • Why do most of these people always have a accent O_o

  • @Jmangogirl Everyone has an accent...

  • Our ability to recognize that we might be insignificant is why we are significant.

  • Insignificant, as in nothing we are doing or ever have done, no matter how significant to us, has had any effect on the universe.

  • @rpsmith014 Right, but how important is the effect we have had on the universe to us compared to the effect we have had on each other. Even though we cant prove it yet, im positive that infinity exists but just because we have little effect on it does not me we are insignificant.

  • @edisoneras2 We're insignificant with respect to the vast universe. At least for now.

  • :D

  • I'm with you, that this single pixel is extremely important to US cause we live here and all our live and history has taken place on this single pixel. BUT if you imagine that any of the other pixel are places like ours with its own history and extremely significant incidents what does this tell us about significance? Significance is relative. For you and me it might be of no significance if a little water drop dries - it'll be totally different for all the monads in it.

  • I have come to believe that the ways in which we understand, categorize, and act base upon importance is severely flawed, and that when we consider something important or unimportant we should not give that judgement serious weight when making decisions.

  • @MyUsername156 no, im too shy, and it would have been kinda weird

  • carl sagan ftw....oh, and you're a cutie

  • I have no idea what your saying but I recommend a haircut and new shirt.

  • all I'm thinking is, is he peter parker?

  • i think hes trying to say that small penis are actually big.... but its not working

  • I think i kinda understand, but just to be sure i think ill rewatch 2 or 3 more times.

  • ive posted a response to hank's video response. You might want to watch it, or not. :P

  • u remind me of Jesse eisenberg

  • You're one of my favorite people. Great video! Completely agree with you.

  • ...Are you a wizard?

  • brilliant.

  • I love you.

  • Man.

  • I never actually thought of it like that but it really does make complete sense :)

  • Eyes deliver worth.

  • I saw you on the train a few weeks ago with a blond woman, you sat next to me and played words with friends.

i recognised you from somewhere but couldnt place it, after much thought i realised you were the guy who did a video on eyes.

  • @xdrowningfishx Did you say hello to him?

  • Y did I watch this (snore)

  • @wilsonhlts

Because you clicked a link to this video and continue watching after you acknowledged what it was.

    Clearly, because you wanted to.

And your regrets are completely irrelevant.

  • Too true.

  • i lost you at two weeks ago

  • nothing has been insignificant since...the incident...
