  • Hi just watched video I've been looking how to get more distance I play off 7 but don't hit the ball that long and don't know why I hit 7 iron approx 150 yards but I struggle playing against peeps same handicap but bomb the ball past only thing is good about my game is short game .

  • Wonderful video. Shawn, your explanation really developed my upward power after I tried several times using the concept but not having head up and down too much. I understood what U said as giving push at appropriate time to increase the swing power. Wonderful it really powerful. But at the beginning, I didn't know how to not moving my head.

  • Hi Shawn! Great videos and you have helped my swing greatly. Can you explain how the Hogan Power Drill with the hip turn can be added into the swing without disturbing the natural rhythm of the swing?

  • Wow...I think this video will finally lead me to the answer of why I do not hit the ball any farther than I currently do. This could be the golf secret we all never receive. Thanks Shawn!

  • @triadhoops You bet! Have a look at my "Feet together and one leg update; shawn clement" and "Horse shoes and lassos; shawn clement" as well as "Power Rhythm in Abu Dhabi; shawn clement" videos which will back this one up very well! Shawn

  • Hey Shawn, this lesson makes a lot of sense to me, but I hear from pros such as Tiger Woods that they are trying not to dip their head so much. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I do notice in some players that dipping seems to be quite minimal. What I make of this is that dipping is mostly about timing and no so much about the amount of dip in the swing. Can you please clarify? I hope I don't come off as some kind of smart ass, Im just very confused, and very new to golf. Thanks for the videos!

  • @edmundkim007 No problem Edmund; see "horse shoes and lassos; shawn clement" as well as "Feet together and one leg update", "Power and rhythm in Abu Dhabi" and "Throwing the club" videos; they will deepen your understanding! Shawn

  • Adding to momentum is like resonance, I understand now. However, I'm confused about the role of hip speed. I also hear that turning your hips faster translates into faster club head speed. Is that because the hips are clearing faster? Or is that because the hips are pulling the rest of the body? Also on a random note, I hit my irons much father (5i=200+ avg) than my driver (200+ avg), is that common among amateurs?

  • shawn - fab video - thanks! Quick question - in this move do you contact the ball as you complete the 'squat' down, or as you are 'standing up' on 'the way up the other side' if that makes sense? I ask because you refer to the skateboarder standing up as he takes off, and also I saw a comment somewhere that Tiger squats then stands up in order to create clubhead speed the opposite way downward into the ball at impact (in line with newtonian physics - ie equal and opposite...)

  • @qwerty009ish You would be starting on your way back up through the ball because the squat is in preparation to rleasing the weight of the arm club unit out towards the target; see "horse shoes and lassos" as well as "Hammer through" and "Farm Hammer" for the release aspect of it; other key videos are "ridiculously easy" and "how to focus" Shawn

  • Great video, playing my best golf ever. If you were a girl I would kiss you!

  • your analogy doesnt hold. standing on the swing and compressing is the equivalent of the clubhead in the centripetal motion of the golf swing, NOT the base that holds the kid swing in place.

  • @sandwah9 It holds perfectly; it just did not dawn on you yet! :) See "Horse shoes and lassos; Shawn Clement" as well as "Feet together and one leg update"; If you had control of the length of the legs of the swing set and could move them up and down at the rhythm of the kid swinging, you could slow him down or speed him up at will! Shawn

  • GREAT video

  • i wonder if this drill would be effective when combined with the one legged drill. Well, only one way to find out......TO THE RANGE!!

  • @remmy100 You will love it! I have a video for that too, see "one leg and feet together update; shawn clement"

    Have fun! Shawn

  • genius at work

  • Sorry, didn't mean to post both, one was a draft and I hit the wrong button.

  • I finally got this and as you said, it's a pretty simple idea. Maybe after years of being your internet student I was just ready for it. I understand now why you say so often in your videos after a demo swing; "that felt really good". It just feels good to make that coordinated rythmic swing. Hitting the ball is incidental. The more I ingnore mechanics and try and think of nothing but the rythm, the better it feels (and the better my swing gets.)

  • @tganley1 Right on tlangley1! If you go to my forum, you will see the title of unlisted video for forum users only where I talk about this in more detail; Keep up the great work with your awareness! Shawn

  • @clemshaw Shawn -we need a video for what we can do when we are NOT playing to ingrain this idea of momentum and awareness permanently. Any ideas? Great videos, great DVD, thanks for the help

  • @tganley1 - I'm so with you on this. Took me ages to realize its all about perpetual motion towards the target. Has nothing to do with "hitting" the ball - However, the gremlin sneaks up and the ENTIRE momentum feel is gone and is replaced by a conscious need to hit the ball & 'help' it. I still need help with removing the need to hit the ball. This video brings it home each time. Shawn -we need a video for what we can do when we are NOT playing to ingrain this idea permanently. any ideas?

  • I decided to go back through the videos I haven't looked at in a few years and started with the feet together material. Glad I did. I don't think this bouncing idea is an element of the swing, I think it is the swing. Once I got the idea and felt it I realized that all those swing thoughts I was trying to keep in my head were a hinderence. I've been working on trying not to think of anything except toss Up, fall down and thorugh.

  • Started trying this at the range last night. Need to work more to nail it every time, but I hit some so crisply and powerfully and far that I am a believer ha. Can't wait to try it some more, ran out of balls :S

  • the more i watch these videos, along with the other videos/tips/etc. i've seen over the time i've tried to learn the golf swing, the more i realize the principles are all the same. the only difference is the efficacy of instruction and conveying the ideas to the pupil. everyone really just wants to teach "golf", not a swing method. in shawn's case, he is definitely one of the best i've seen and probably will ever see. i take it you've read the little red book, right shawn?

  • @dschultz6072

Yes, you bet! Can't ignore a guy like that! I got lots of great nuggets in there to validate what I was teaching like "allow the right hip to turn in the backswing to complete it!" and "Take Dead AIM!" Shawn

  • i do like your videos. but two "higher profile guys" ( foley with modified stack n tilt and trahan with ppgs) seem to me to prefer the knees to be stabilizers-- flexed and maintained throughout. allowing the knees to move up and down seems to sap the "repeatability" factor out of the swing--especially with higher handicappers! so, would you agree there are many different ways to get to the mall? instruction can be very confusing when so many people preach so many different things!

  • @steckleinjr Sorry dude; not this one; we are human beings on planet earth and we are experts in gravity; it is VERY EASY TO FALL PREY TO GUYS WHO SELL THEIR STUFF THROUGH FEAR; and this is exactly what happens to so many lost golfers; I have an army of students (I see 80 per week in winter) who can knock the head off of a pin and this way of swinging is way more accurate than keeping your knees fixed; and please don't compare me to Trahan, he is one of the biggest fear mongers.

  • @clemshaw HA HA! Where did I compare you to Trahan? I was simply asking a question, dude!. Also, this question was asked 2 months ago. And (as a human being on planet earth) i have viewed your d.v.d's and I will have you know that i honestly consider them to be the most relavant, most beneficial vehicles of instruction i have ever viewed " So I thank you and will continue trying to implement some of your stuff in my own teaching (of course citing you along the way)

  • @steckleinjr Well thanks man! Sorry about that reply; it is a constant job to reset the trend that we lost sight of when TV and Video came along and a bunch of Type A teachers started making all these theories out of opinions based on opinions; Jones, Wild Bill, Austin, Snead, Hogan had way better nuggets than what has been out there for a while; and I get caught up every once in a while and answer 8 month old questions...:)

  • Shawn, thanks for referring me to this video. I see you are raising your head on the backswing here. It is well documented that Woods and Hogan both lowered their heads on the backswing, and then lowered them even more on the downswing. What are your thoughts on that?

  • @bellatrixg They both start from a very tall posture; there is nowhere else to go but down! :) Kenny Perry comes up even more that what you see here!

    Shawn

  • @clemshaw Excellant observations, and you are absolutely right about Ken Perry. I really appreciate your systematic, common sense method and generosity in posting these videos.

  • the skateboarding compression motion is called pumping :) cool tips

  • The force generated from this up & down motion combined with the hip turn reminds me of the modern tennis serve. Watching any great serve from (Roger Federer, Pete Sampras, Michael Stich, Robin Soderling) there's a distinct sit down with front hip pushed out into the court (big hip turn), then the hip release corkscrewing the body upwards. I find it very challenging staying centered while winding up for golf or tennis. If it was easy anybody can do it. "Anyone can hit it crooked." M. Norman

  • Bonjour Shawn,

Juste pour dire que je suis fan de la méthode...

Bizarre mais la majorité des golfeurs ici "calculent" trop leurs coups au lieu de laisser leur instinct faire

    Bonne continuation

    Thierry

  • This was an eye opener, because I was having issues with the feet together drill, because I am sure I was trying to keep my head steady and knees flexed -- not allowing my body to figure it out on its own! So, I guess its okay for your head to bob naturally, and not try to hold it steady?

  • @cmterpsnskins Yes; as long as you are not coming out of it with the chest and are responding to the centrifugal force of the swing and not thinking about the legs; just allowing them to function; see the response I gave to NikeGolf118 too; Shawn

  • Shawn, really really? xD

  • @CosmicSPC Yes, really really! See the response I gave to NikeGolf118! :)

    Shawn

  • I feel like such a dummy for not watching this video before. I have been DYING on the feet together drill. Allowing my mind to just let the knees flex and extend has done wonders for me. It all makes sense now. Thanks again, Shawn. Bravo.

  • whip that golf club. hahah. hell yeah it feels so good to do it

  • Shawn, after implementing this drill, I am hitting my shots extremely fat or very thin. I am ordering your DVD this week and admire your work so much, when people ask me who my golf teacher is i tell them "Shawn Clement from the Richmond Hill Golf Learning Center." Shawn, any recommendation will help. I know you are very busy so I appreciate your reading of this post from a loyal subscriber and supporter!

    -Mike

  • @NikeGolf118 Thank you Mike!

Just make sure you are allowing the legs to do their work in relation to adding a nice twirling action in the direction of the target and not in the direction of the ball; feel that you are responding to the centrifugal force of the arm-club unit and not trying to flex and extend the legs; Shawn

  • Hi Shawn, when you start your swing by moving your hips forward, are you also compressing down slightly? Would this slight downward compression at the start the club more up and less around my body? I'm trying to feel more of that up and down piston action. Thanks.

  • @jimmya67 ; great observation! Yes; when I move forward it braces me against the left side and gets my body ready for some nice rotational momentum in the backswing; my body is then able to flow out of the way of the heaved arm-club unit being swung into the backswing; Great Question!

    Shawn

  • @clemshaw Thanks for the response. For my swing, that realization was a big subtlety (oxymoron?). Compressing slightly downward along with forward move of the hips put my plane more upright in the toss. I felt more of the "swing awareness" video sensation and the momentum of the arm club unit feels much heavier. I assume because there is more up and down piston action in the move? I'd really love to see a video on what you feel in just that forward/down start the swing move.

  • @jimmya67 I've always tried to copy the belly dancer analogy for hip movement to start the swing, but this doesn't have that slight downward compression. This downward compression subtlety was a big help for my perpetually flat plane and may be for others in the same boat. Thanks again!!

  • Hello, just wondering if you would clarify. The way I look at this is as you backswing, your body goes up, then when it's time to swing, the body has to adjust itself again.

So wouldn't it make it harder that we have to worry about up and down adjustment and could cause to miss hitting the ball?

Thanks and pls feel free to pvt msg me about this, so I can understand more.

  • @saijinkai You are missing the point! When you allow the body to move freely, you enable it to perform it's work properly and allow it to react to the swinging of the arm-club unit; when you hold or manipulate the body, you RUIN YOUR AWARENESS TO MOVEMENT; stop swinging in fear of losing a position and stop listening to teachers who are afraid for you; it would be like saying: There were 1000 accidents on the road today; EVERYBODY STOP DRIVING AND MOVING AROUND! Know what I mean? Shawn

  • Hi Shawn,

Another great video! Man, you're giving away so much valuable information all for free! Even at the expense of these videos affecting the sales of your DVD's!! You have no idea how much I improved my game after I stared watching your videos a few years ago. Because of you and what you have put together, I enjoy golf and stay passionate about improving my game. Thank you Shawn and keep up the great work!!

  • You are welcome! What and pass up great comments like this! :)

    No worries; the DVD has it's place as it has all the important information in priority sequence plus a few surprises that are not on You Tube;

    Well worth having; Shawn

  • @clemshaw Just wanted to say thanks again for great instruction. i bought your dvd's last year and they have helped tremendously. i used them this year prior to going out along with this vid and it helps tremendously....keep up the good work.

    willy.

  • Good vid Shawn... except that mark guy i think is not understanding it correctly.... the continuous motion of his arms is fundamental to golf.... maybe he should watch your earlier vids more....Starkman

  • Thanks Starkman; not worried; many students to this day say that it is only after watching a certain video for the 10th time that the lights come on...:)

    Shawn

  • HI Shawn,This viedo has opened my eyes to the golf swing.I can now compress my left leg down on the downswing and that allows for my arms to have continous motion through impact.I have always been to hand, arm, shoulder dominant in my golf swing and have worried about positions too much. The drill about the head moving a little up and down on the backswing and thru swing was also an eye opener and has changed my game up on the right down on the left, continious motion, love it Mark S. Greaux

  • im still a little confused...i know alot of the best ball strikers often mention a squatting like action, im just confused on the technique of it..if you dont conciously having a jumping sensation in your mind, then how do squat and then start to straiten your left leg prior to impact?

  • OK; good question! It is not a consciously done thing; feel it first in the " golf pro lesson one leg and feet together update" video; do the feet together version and you will see that the only way to complete the swing AND to feel that boost in centrifugal force in the twirl is to allow the legs to extend slightly in the backswing and then to allow the legs to flex into the downswing in preparation to twirling to the target; relax and let it come to you; it will evolve in your swing...

  • in the downswing i plant on my left foot, and my left leg almost increases a little bit in flex to insure that i got my weight into my left side, which slightly drops my head...whats it your take on this...and i did find from the video you recommended how the leg straightens...what i found is that when the left pocket comes backwards and the right hip goes fowards it locks that left leg automatically...do you think this is correct...sorry for all the questions but good stuff, thanks alot! :)

  • Just feel how this works with the feet together drill; see "golf pro lesson feet together and one leg update" video; the focus should be on adding speed to the twirling action of the swing and NOT ON POSITIONAL BODY PART STUFF; Shawn

  • Shawn, I've been watching and following your instructions strictly for 8 months. Things come together in the last 2 months and from then I've had many subpar rounds. I watch some of your video repeatedly more than 20 times to get everything out of them. Too bad I live on the other side of the world or I will surely see you in person. Can't thank you enough, you're such a brilliant teacher.

  • Hi Shawn, wouldn't the up and down movement cause duffed shots?

  • The key here is to not focus on the up and down motion and to simply ALLOW FOR IT when focusing on that nice effortless twirl, or whip to target; see "golf pro lesson tilted twirl" for more in depth; my students freak when they see my take the perfect skip on the carpeted concrete of the floor of the indoor portion of the learning center without tearing the carpet or breaking the club; stay with your target and the whipping action to your target and you will be much more than fine. Shawn

  • Shawn, there are so many golfers, especially in America, that are better ball-strikers thanks to you. Thank you for that you have done over the past few years. I have seen all your videos and own your DVD.

  • Thanks very much kmh196700!

I will keep it up; lots of cool stuff happening in 2010!

    Shawn

  • Shawn, if i'm not mistaken, this is how smaller sized players generate their tremendous clubhead speed. i realise rory mcilroy, sergio, rickie fowler, jamie sadlowski... all this guys less than 5'10 and yet hit it a mile. i realise they have a distinct move, thats squat down n exploded up!! i'm having hard time to do so, i can't time the squating and extending. its just feel un-natural. anything tips to help?? thanks. elvis

  • The feet together drill is the best drill to feel this so see "golf pro lesson feet together drill" and combine it with "golf pro lesson perpetual motion drill" where you will be swinging back and through without stopping and then you will get the feel and you will be able to bring it into the full swing with the perpetual motion drill as well! Have fun! Shawn

  • Shawn, my swing has improved tremondously this year since I started watching your videos. You're an amazing, gifted teacher and the way you communicate/decipher golf swing ideas/tips is simply brilliant. Thanks a lot!

  • At the moment Im working on keeping my right knee flexed during the backswing, I usually straighten the right knee during the takeway causing my to lift the club up to steep and eventually reverse pivot at the top of the backswing, now I am really confused should I keep the right knee flexed?

  • Very Important comment!!! Have a look at my "golf pro lesson learn your golf machine" and "golf pro lesson leg and footwork" to get the whole picture;

You don't want the left leg to collapse in the backswing and sucking the weight pressure to the front of the left foot which would cause the right left to straighten as a reaction to this out of balance position; BALANCE IS EVERYTHING IN THE SWING; NO BALANCE, NO GOLF SWING; Thank you for this important question! Shawn

  • Hey great video and dvd,

I was wondering...I tend to do this a lot, I squat and raise up but I can get my clubhead speed up there... but I feel like my arms are getting behind when I raise up after I squate and I tend to heel the ball sometimes...any suggestions? am I not releasing the club? Thanks

  • You want to make sure that the focus is always on getting that centrifugal whip to peak towards the target; right now, it sounds like you are still in the mechanical stage; you are welcome to think about this in your practice swing but not over the ball; see "golf pro lesson how to repeat your practice swing" so that once you get that feel from the practice swing, you know how to bring it through the ball to your target; Thanks for the comment! Shawn

  • I don't know. I like your videos but I'm a little concerned about so much body movement. The technique you show seems like it would cause a lot of topped and fat shots. But, Tiger does it. He's pretty good.

  • This is a lot less movement than Tiger!! Also the reason why it is so easy to repeat is that you are focused on a feel and the central nervous system and your instincts will light up like a Xmas tree and lock into the feel; vs trying to find the same positions manually which would take you literally an eternity to make consistent!! Thanks for the comment! Shawn

  • Hey Shawn, Ive been having some solid ball striking thanks to you. Although I'm still getting my body used to my new swing, I still have a few bad shots but they're improving every weekend.

I have come to realize that the full swing that you teach is actually an expanded form of the "One legged drill." The way I approach the full swing is to swing as if I was doing the one legged drill, my right leg acts like a kick stand really.

I'm getting compliments from my friends about my smooth swing.

  • That is a great analogy! I hope you don't mind I use it from time to time! :) Thanks for that!

    Shawn

  • @clemshaw,

I'd love to see you use it in one of your videos.

    Cheers!

  • Shawn remenber me, I was playing yesterday and I hit the ball so solid doing what you said to me to do, no staying too quite over the ball, now with more flow in the swing even I feel now the weight of the club and feel the momentum, Thanks I hope to see a answer of you, God Bless you

  • Glad to help out! :)

    Shawn

  • Hey Shawn, lately I've not only gained distance on all my clubs but I noticed my woods shots have a much lower trajectory which I'm not used to. The ball seems to fly a meter above the ground at the start, then it rises to a high point just before landing.

Is the lower trajectory a normal result from using your method of momentum?

    Thanks!

  • A more penetrating ball flight yes but not a ballooning flight; your set up will determine how high or low you want the ball to start; you can position the sternum notch on the back of the ball for the fairway woods and hybrids and a couple inches behind with the driver...Shawn

  • Hi Shawn, thank you for all the videos. My question is how to maintain the right knee flex. It looks like you are straightening the right knee to some degree which I thought was to be avoided. Would you clarify this for me??

  • This video is a continuation of another video I have called "golf pro lesson head bobbing" which will answer your question; have a look! Thanks for your question! Shawn

  • Hey Shawn, have you done a video for long irons and woods. I keep hooking my long irons and woods with the strong grip.

It works great for short and mid irons though.

    Thanks!

  • A couple of subtle things you can do here; you can slightly back off the grip or the closed face at address; then watch ball position is not too far forward; keep the sternum notch right on top of the ball for the long irons and fairway woods and just slightly behind the ball with the driver; last but not least, reset your red line!! Tempo, tempo, tempo smooth through the ball with heavy momentum...wait for it! Shawn

  • I think I have the ball too far forward and definitely redlining.

I'll work on those tips, thanks again pal!

  • Am I correct in assuming that this same principle can be applied to every club in the bag? Or is there a different technique to getting distance off of the tee?

  • Same principle to every club is applied. Even when chipping. The pros always post up against the left leg especially when chipping.

    Cheers!

  • Absolutely! Just listen to the momentum and centrifugal force; you would simply be standing on a swing with much longer chains...

    Thanks for the question! Shawn

  • It's the effortless heavy momentum that shoots the ball with great distance, ala, Angel Cabrera.

Super video Shawn, I'm still working out the wrinkles.

    God bless your work!

  • gotta agree with you on this one 1t! its all about the compression!

  • I have to say again this video gave me another major "AHA" moment.

For me what happens is that when you use the plant-squat to properly initiate the down swing, you will feel a tension in your left gluteus and lower left lat. If you feel that tension then your are at a moment of maximum leverage that allows you to sling/swat through the ball with maximum speed. If you plant-squat late, ie after the downswing started, you lose that moment, balance, target ...etc

  • Yes sir! That is the feel! Way to go! Shawn

  • Shawn you are awesome i really like the recent switch to HD. Thanks for all your help!!!!!!

  • When I truly listen to OBIWAN "let go luke use the force..." I feel the head bob/squatty feeling naturally in the feet together drill. I hit a driver that carried 225 with the feet together the other day while showing some one else the drill and he said wow and then I said wow.

The other thing I have noticed is that when I hold the lower case y from hip to hip I really feel my elbows staying close and tremendous width in the backswing. I have to say this video says it all.

  • @bluejfk

BTW my normal carry is is 255-260

  • i used to hit all my shots thin due to an early extension and I stopped "extending" my left side in hopes of gaining consistency. Im glad you posted this video because I see how i had timing issues. maybe i can finally break 80! thanks sean

  • Hi Shawn,

Its Mohamed just wanted to say that this video helped me a lot for my downswing transition here in morocco.

And I hope I will be there with you this upcoming summer

    Thanks!

  • Shawn,

Yet again some awesome information. I will be in touch soon for January winter session.

  • fantastic video

  • Thanks Shawn. But I've always been taught that the head bobing up is very bad. Won't this "move" make hitting the ball solidly much harder?

  • Not at all!! It is much easier!! Remember what I said: You need to feel the timing of it just like when you are standing on a swing; once you have this, it is like riding a bike! get to work on the perpetual motion with the feet together! Shawn

  • I've no doubt you can hit 185 yard with a 7 iron, but there's also a chance you forgot to count in those 10 yards or so behind you. Not that it's important. Very good video. Thanks.

  • I did take that into consideration...:) We have a green with a 180 pin that I flew on this shot...Thanks for the comment! :) Shawn

  • It's not important when your swing looks that good and has such amazing rhythm!

  • I noticed Tiger does this too...

  • Terrific explanation Shawn.

  • Great tips as always Shawn. I think I have a pretty good weight shift on my downswing, and I will be trying the perpetual motion to get some fluid extension on my movements. I believe a stiff flex shaft is in order though because I've recently got a clip of my swing in slow motion and I notice lots of bend in the regular Aldila shaft I currently use. It started snowing here Sudbury when we were filming that clip, how many months is it till summer?

  • 185yd with a 7 iron. That's a fair whack!

  • Great video Shawn,

This may be the missing link in my golf swing, I need a little more power without loosing any accuracy.

Can't try it now anyway, we had our first snowfall this weekend in Switzerland.

    Merci et à bientot

  • Nice one Shawn.
