I used to own a 2600, and had both Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man. The original 2600 Pac-Man had its faults, but was still a good game in its own right-a different take on Pac-Man. The 2600 Ms. Pac-Man was an improvement-more true to the arcade game. Atari continued on for several more years after the original Nintendo came out, and the 5200 and 7800 versions of Pac-Man were more true to the arcade games as well. I currently own two different Pac-Man plug-in games, both which are like the original.
I remember the day it came out (the original pacman on Atari) A part of me was like... oh well, it's the best the machine can do. But when Ms. PacMan came out and saw how much better it was, I had my first glimpse into the idea that a game could be rushed and come out crappy.
I know it's a hacked Ms. Pac-Man rom, but I'd rather have this on my Atari 2600 anyday. Just imagine if this was the version that came out...would the crash have happened? Would the Famicom come out in the U.S. (as the NES)? Would the gaming industry as we know it today be in existance if this version of pac-man came out?
@THEsquirrel3d The crash might not have happened, but the NES would have definitely came out. It probably would have been a bit easier, and maybe wouldn't have needed a robot addition to sell units.
@THEsquirrel3d Yeah that was the reason, anyone who ties Pacman to the crash is being silly since Pacman for the 2600 was released in 1981 and the crash happened in the 4th quarter of 1983. E.T. didn't cause it either. Pacman and E.T. were only 2 games. The crash is like you said, over saturation of consoles and everyone making poor video games due to a lack of quality control. I mean even cereal companies and dog food companies were making video games.
As for the crash, I remember Revco and other stores selling Atari 2600 games for $3.99-a lot of them were crappy from the get go-at least I only risked $3.99 a game instead of $30. I also recall copies of E.T and Raiders Of The Lost Ark going for $1 on the clearance shelves at some stores in the mid-1980's. And used video game cartridges could be found at pretty much any thrift shop until the mid-2000's. By then, Atari stuff started becoming collector's items.
I often wonder what Atari was thinking when they released Pacman for the 2600? It's so bad! It's even debatable it (& E.T.) contributed to the decline of the entire company. Maybe they rushed it for Xmas release & cost was a limiting factor for using 4k vs 8k chips, but at least they could have got the colors right! Had they gone 8k & released something like this or "Hack'em", while immediate profits may have suffered, Atari would've recouped them by maintaining it's integrity & reputation.
@moviemovies1 Wow, your right. I just looked it up @ Atariage "dot" com. Pesco is a homebrew from 1999. Hack'em is a hack of it. Thx for pointing that out.
BTW, when did youtube make it so you can't put a "." in the word "dot com?
The sounds could have been a little bit better but, I agree with you.

I think the people from AtariAge did this homebrew version. They did some pretty damn good homebrews for Atari 2600 and 7800.

Yes, this is MUCH more truer to the original. Shows that it could have been done properly.
A decent maze and a 'rotating' Pac sprite. What Atari released was appalling. I hated it even as a nipper.

It's amazing how Atari completely dropped the ball on the game, but still managed sales records.

@val1ent True. Let's not forget that many other things led to the crash too. Too many systems, too many rush job games being made, oversaturation.

@gjc82071 they raped pacman like this because they tryed to make namco look bad or something
estlib 1 year ago
@estlib Could be. Seriously, 1, well, 2 actually, reasons it looked to shitty...
1. Programming time. The guy was only given like 4 weeks or something so as to make sure it would be out for X-mas.
2. Do to cost constraints, the decision to use a 4k vs 8k chip.
Wow. Amazing. When you think of it today, haggling of a lousy stinking 4k!!! An average email used more than that!
BTW, have you ever seen "Hack'em" , an Atari 2600 Pacman homebrew version? It is amazing.
