@NickZaharris14 Nope, a hair dryer isn't hot enough. And yes, you have to get the thermal paste so it won't overheat as easily next time.
The Home Depot sells heat guns for $20, and thermal paste you can get almost anywhere. Just make sure to get the branded ones, so they'll last much longer :D
@pogodafreeride go on ebay and get the copper plates that go ontop of the thermal paste, then reapply paste to the top of copper platings,if u want a example of this go on ebay australia and go 2 the 24.95 ps3 repair kit and it has a video on the sellers page
I think the 40gb is better than the 60 and 80 because I have had my 40gb for 4 years now and still havent got the yellow light of death and my freinds got a 60 and 80 and a year later they got the ylod. Now they have the xbox and I still have the 40gb ps3.
i haave a question umm underneeth the cpu and gpu you think if adding JB weld on it and waiting a proper 24 to 30 hours for it to dry, do you think the ylod wont happen again?? becuzz tecnacly the ylod is becuzz of the sodder on the cpu and gpu is loose bcuzz it over heating right??well wouldnt JB weld hold it in place and keep the sodder from moving around????just asking cuzz in a tec freak and car freak..and i used JB weld on a gasket last week and just saw this so im just asking...YOU THINK?
And it's not that the CPU/GPU move its due to the cheap soddering done by sony cracking when the motherboard flexes due to high heat. The only way to permanently fix YLOD is with a reballing (replacing the soddering on the CPU/GPU completely)
i got the YLOD today on my 40gig PS3 :( is it worth sending it off to get fixed by one of those little console fixing companies for about £60? i think they would do a better job than me, and if they did would i end up having to keep re-applying stuff to the GPU?
I put on some arctic silver but didn't use the correct heat gun. I want to redo it but when I go through the steps again, the heatsink is now stuck to the motherboard because of the paste. Help please. I went to get a heat gun but now I can't use it because my motherboard is stuck!
@HDGamingRoom Oh yeah, I just got it apart. I actually originally tried to reflow the components with a soldering iron but went out to get a heat gun, Low setting = 750, High setting = 1000. Used it on low, Waiting for it to cool down as we speak. I will report success or failure. Also using a different paste this time (Arctic Silver 5 with polysynthetic silver) I was wondering if you have any tips and if that is good paste to be using.
Also (sorry about all the questions, kinda a n00b)
HDGamingRoom, you did an amazing job with that video. Really great!
I got YLOD yesterday and have question about the Heat Gun part. I have a Heat Gun at home (Black & Decker - KX1682 Heat Gun 1600W) and it has two heat settings. 140 & 560°C (284F & 1040F) Which setting would you use if you were me and what distance and for how long at each chip? I would really appreciate your input =) Cheers
I did EXACTLY what u did and it worked, but when i started it again i got a black screen and i did the 3 beep thing and it didnt work. any suggestions?
so after i had this problem fixed it happened again, i had it fixed again but i don't want this problem to happen again, what do i do to prevent this problem from occuring again?
@abustaiff The main way to stop this happening again is to make sure that you heat the board at the right temperature and allow it to cool slowly. Cooling the board to quick will cause cracks in the solder again. Also making sure you apply the thermal paste as well as you can, also buying a Silver based thermal paste might help as they are the best for heat.
@HDGamingRoom Just has the sony programmed YLOD on my ps3 after 4 years of it, my ps2 still lasts after 7-9+ years. Called sony and they said they don't repair consoles, they can just trade equipment plus a charge (140€) , guess I'm screwed, one thing is for sure, I AM going to sue them.
Do NOT send it to Sony. This will NEVER fix this problem, because they can't use lead solder for the joints on the gpu chip, which is causing the YLOD. It's restricted to use in the EU, which was sanctioned by the RoHS organization.
That's the problem... They use lead free solder again, which will YLOD sooner or later.
The solution:
Reball the solder joints with lead solder and YLOD should never return for this issue.
@HDGamingRoom it works now but my disc wont come out it sounds like its coming out but then goes back in and starts the game also cant get online yet might open it up again and try to realign the blu ray player
@Bonecrusher1302 I never had this problem, make sure you have connected the wifi cable properly and I don't really understand what you mean by 'realign the blu ray player'
@Bonecrusher1302 The Wi-Fi bit is that green board at the front that is attacked to that long thin wire. At the end of the wire is a small aerial. Its at about 1min 40sec in the video
@HDGamingRoom o so its not the one connected to the blu ray drive under it o and i found out y my disc wont come out i think i am missing the back screw that connects to the blu ray drive i never put it back but now cant find it
@HDGamingRoom i fixed it thanks for all the help the wifi cable wasnt connected and something for the blu ray drive wasnt connected the screw didint matter i found out cause i was playing it while it was open thanks for the vid and advice
if you power up your ps3 with no hard drive will it cause the YLOD? Im trying to figure out if mine is a hard drive issue or not and with or without the hard drive in it gives the YLOD ive already reflowed board and put in a known working power supply.
Thanks for the guide
It's really works for me .

Why do you need to heat the ps3 first if your just going to let it cool back down? Have you tried it without heating it up because I have no gun XD
