  • Their is also the possibility that earth is the first advanced civilization supporting planet in the gallexy (If that is the case "FIRST!") and others are being formed or were formed afterr ours.

  • fallenalien . com

  • I think the idea that we are alone in the universe is incredibly depressing. There has to be something out there, if its little bacteria or a race more advanced than we can even comprehend. I can't bring myself to believe that we are alone, broadcasting sound to a universe that can't hear us because it has no ears.

  • I like your shirt. Jesus Christ holding a cross like a lightsaber. WIN

  • I believe there is life out there; whether or not they have actually visited Earth or even know of our existence is debatable, but by sheer numbers alone there MUST be life out there somewhere. :)

  • often, people think about aliens being superior physically and technologically, however, if you think of it this way; aliens may be less developed than we are, we could be the superior beings for once rather than these sci-fi films that depict aliens coming and killing us all with lasers and they have four legs and whatever, maybe that why they arent transmitting anything back, they may not have the technology like us.

  • Hopefully they are humanoid and find our women attractive as startrek has so often led us to believe.

  • I don't know if there is anything out there, i won't take a side but if there is i can't imagine we'd ever actually find them. Plenty of space in the universe for a couple of civilisations to never find each other. I don't think we can have the technology to actually travel that away, it would require, like, at least a country of people to board a rocket so that we could keep the population going over the time it took to reach wherever they might be.

  • so figuratively we have to put everyone on our planet into a straight jacket

  • I'm not sure if you've blown John's mind. But you certainly blew mine.

  • Yes, its impossible for the universe to be SO BIG and have no life in it.

  • What if one day they discover a planed with life we become friends and we could transport there! It would be cool if one day u walk into class and there is a new kid u say "hey were u from" the kids says "the other planet mars" that be really cool

  • I bet the people of Keplar-22b have these same conversations.

  • Hi Hank! You're probably not reading this because it's an older video, but incase you are, I have a request. Could you please make a video or something explaining how fermi's paradox is, in fact, a paradox? Or at least why it is called a paradox? I watched this video for the first time about a month ago and ever sense then I've been doing research on fermi's paradox and I don't get it! I get the concept but not why it's a paradox. Help? Please?

  • guys, come one. Doctor who already proves there's life out there.

  • I think that if aliens are out there, they would undoubtedly be far more advanced than ours and so would not want to make contact. Think about it, we're a pretty messed-up civilization, who would want to be friends with people who would bomb their own families and friends over whose invisible friend is the best.

Just my viewpoint, I realize the phrasing may be a little off-putting to some people...

  • A civilization that advance, would probably see no reason for killing us...

  • What I don't get is why scientists believe that life other places in the universe should have the same conditions for living as we do. Evolution shows that we have adapted to our environment, why shouldn't that be true for "aliens"? Even a couple of years back scientists found a bacteria that could survive in conditions that we never before thought they could. And that was here on earth!

  • @Hippogriff9 that's EXACTLY what i always wonder! you just said it a lot better than i usually do :p

  • Does he have on a shirt with a Jedi Jesus? I want it.

  • I find the idea more crazy that there ISN'T life you there. I mean they might be faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar away and can't pick up our signals, or we can't pick up theirs. OR their planet could be in an earlier state, like the stone age, and have yet to come up with that technology. Who's to say that no one was contacting us when Earth was at our earliest stages, but because we weren't so far advanced, we couldn't pick it up or reply?

  • i have debated these 2 questions with myself for several years now and i have come to the conclusin that there has to be life out there somehwere. it could as primitive as single celled organisms or so advanced that they are slowly going from planet to planet, solar system to solar system, galaxy to galaxy colonizing the universe. as to if they will be friendly, who knows, it all depends on how much resources they have, if they have little they will destroy us if they have alot they will help us

  • WATCH VIDEO: AREA 51 WITHOUT PANTS!!!

WATCH VIDEO: AREA 51 WITHOUT PANTS!!!

  • this makes me think of slaughterhouse five by kurt vonnegut when he talks about the tralfamadorians.

  • You should probably read "The Blind Watchmaker" by Richard Dawkins.

  • maybe we're all alone! mayyyybe we are completely unique and our planet is one of a kind. if you think about it, what other planet, ANYWHERE has such a thing as a shamwow? or a bouncy ball? or germ x? perhaps we as a civilization are completely different from anything else in the universe and we are the only ones with life. lonely? yeah, it is. but cool and narcisistic? heck yes.

  • WHAT is on your shirt???? i try to read it but my humanite eyes are unsuccessful!!!

  • @MrFishes101 I think it's Jesus wielding a cross-shaped lightsaber.

  • I like your shirt :P

  • I think there must be some form of life out there (we are not THAT special) and I think if any culture is able to get here they will either:

be friendly (seeking other intelligent life)

be interested in knowing (not interested in US but what we know)

be interested in our stuff (nice planet ill take it)

or will have an intelligence that is so different from ours that we can not understand each other.

  • if there more advanced than us they probably sent out radio waves a thousand years early before us

  • It is entirely possible that we are the most advanced civilization in the entire universe. I mean, somebody has to be.

  • Calm down.

  • I definitely think there's life out there. Why would our planet be the only special one that gets to sustain life? And I doubt we'll see anything of them in our lifetimes. Also, I don't see why they would be unfriendly. All we ever did to them was find them. They can't be that shy.

  • @L0VEIsAllYuNeed I don't think it's that they are shy, I think it's like a scenario where a really weird-looking, unknown (and possibly hostile) animal is found outside or in one's home or a public space like a shopping mall in a big chunk of metal. It's more of a shock factor, in my opinion. I'm pretty sure our species' first reaction to something like this would be to lock them in jail and wait for scientists to probe them. Which is, like, kind of unfriendly. :P

  • there is of couse, the option that we, the underdogs of every sci-fi movie, could be the first civilization to reach this age without anihilating itself

  • Imagine this: You are on a boat at sea. You take an empty glass, and put it under the water, filling it up. When the glass is full, you inspect it. There are no fish in the glass.

There are millions of fish in the sea, but you have only just scraped the surface.

There may be millions of aliens out there, but we have only just scraped the surface.

  • @24Pianist and also we have received broadcasts from space

    two of them

and they were blurry, not very long, and sounded kind of like someone vomiting with a circus in the background xD

thumbs up so vloggy boy can see!!

  • i say hell yes and if you seen acient alein we have alreayd been vists HAHAHS well we might get attacked by evil aliens who are out for intersteller cominotion

  • why would they kill us

  • there is without a doubt some form of life other than what is on earth there are 4 reasons we don't know about them 1 they are at the same level we are at and do not have even inter stellar travel let alone inter galactic 2 they are more advanced than us but are too far away to realistically travel to us 3 they are either non sentient or not capable of space travel or finally that they are close and capable of traveling too us but realize that our society isn't ready for contact with them

  • @pyrokineticaura this is an ultra simplified assumption of things though (sorry I ran out of characters)

  • Yes I believe they are out there

    yes I think we will

Ahhh but that's the BIG question.

Well if they're anything like us, I think they probably will try to kill us, and if they are very different from us, we will probably try to kill them. I do like to think that we will eventually make friendly or at least non killing eachothery relations with another species of intelligent beings, (hopefully not in an alience to kill others) but I think it might take us a few tries.

  • we have been sending ultra low frequency radio. not high.

  • The aliens are coming, but they're coming from so far away, it'll take a while to get here.

  • Statistically, there really should be other life in the cosmos. However, in my 17 years of watching sci fi, there are many a reason why we wouldnt know about them! My favorite of these is the scenario where we CREATE an intelligent lifeform, which we in turn treat as lower beings, thus making them angry and they use our weapons against us to wipe out our entire civilization. (thank you Battlestar Gallactica)

  • David Spade needs to slow down.

  • I think that there is other life out there, but nothing like the stuff we see in Star Trek or Doctor Who (well, sort of). I mean, who's to say they're not human? We've never seen them, so why do we make assumptions over what they look like?

Also, I think they would have no reason to attack us unless they're going for universe domination.

  • yes I think there is life out there, to quote Contact "It would be a waste of space." and I think they would not kill us until they knew how advanced we are, for example, they would hang out and see how well we fight, until they start cracking up when they hear our arguments about if band or orchestra's better...

  • this is what I think about when I get drunk. then I tend to have existential crises. and cry.

  • forest of the dead river song

  • I believe without a doubt that there is life out there. There's no way that out of the endless void of space, that only one tiny itty bitty speck has living organisms. If aliens have observed us at all and not landed here, that proves their intelligence. "This planet is full of people who kill each other. Better not stay here, imagine what they could do to us." Another thing: I have a difficult time wrapping my head around the idea that space is endless, yet how could it end? Giant brick walls?

  • maybe they live on a planet that cant support fire so there stuck in the stone age?

  • What if we are the first? Maybe we are the most advanced civilization around.

  • @munrowood or the last advanced civilization around b/c the others eventually killed themselves off

  • Will they kill us? What happened to the natives when colonists arrived in America for the first time?

  • @ThisIsMalice alliens will kill us and do pain tings on us :( !

  • It's simply to statistically improbable for life not to exist else where.

  • @Mralec007 "statistically improbable"

    nope it isn't

  • "Hidden" Hubble Deep Field.

  • Comment removed

  • I prefer the Hitchikers guide theory which is that we are all the playthings of omnipotent space mice.

  • @TheFabledWelshOne lol i know. i love that he's having this conversation wearing that tshirt

  • Is there life? Statistically... yes.

Will we see them? Not in my lifetime. Maybe in a thousand years if we're still around.

  • And another theory, is that aliens took cells or animals from their planet, and set it on earth to see if it would evolve differently.

  • Stephen Hawking once said that, if there were aliens, why are they quiet? Are they hiding from another species?

And I say, keep the search for aliens on, but don't spill millions of dollars into it, we could take one of our species, (Like octopi or dolphins) and help it evolve, nurture it, we have the ability to help them, we can force evolution, or we can help it steadily walk into its own path, we could do this someday.

  • your shirt wins

  • Is Hank seriously wearing a Jesus with a light saber shirt?!

  • Wouldn't it take awhile for the signal to reach us? What if they're, like, on par with us? Then we wouldn't detect each other for quite some time.

  • they will kill us all, in a friendly way. through public television and The Intranet(internet).

  • yes. no. there will be a battle of the species... because that's just how humanity rolls

  • mybe thay have been contacting us... but maybe YEARS AND YEARS Before we evolved! so weve been used to the signal and its effects, we live around it with out even noticing, because we dont know anything other than this signal, or maybe its working visa versa

  • Hanks shirt. Oh my goodness. That's awesome.

  • Actually, when I was about five or six, I used to have these paranoid thoughts that maybe I was taken away from the real Earth, and was put in certain environments so that aliens could see how I reacted. Other times I thought I was the result of an alien experiment gone wrong, and that everyone around me were in fact aliens in disguise, all analyzing my every move...

  • @Hippogriff9 I have fears that I am really dreaming on an alein ship or planet, and that everything I know is a dream. we should make a support group :D

  • @sciencenerd111

I've had those too! But it's not to the point where I actually worry about it, it's more pondering.

  • @Hippogriff9 so the aliens are testing me again with this comment...

  • Yes, of course there is. Yes, of course we will. I don't know, it depends on why they're contacting us. :D

  • I don't know, hank. But I guess I'd say if IS just us... well, seems like an awful waste of space.

contact is the best sci-fi movie ever

  • asumption is the mother of all fuck-ups ...

we don't contact maggots and mites.. we dont qualify as life in the universe.

we are a failed genetic experiment, abandoned here on this little spec.

I dont think aliens listen to us or transmit to us.

Our knowledge of the universe is like a drop of water in the pacific ocean.

or a grain of sand in the sahara.

We are small.. .....very very small.

  • Im scared

  • there going to kill us cuz if they are real they dont need us

  • @22cetacean that is a good idea..when i put it into mind humm well hopefully we live past 2012 xD lol and advance and build things better so we can one day detect aliens out there :O....i honestly think were hybrids though idk..i mean were smart enough to be capable of anything we want to and we look how we do not big green men with huge black eyes...idk its weird but i think of it that way we are an advanced species. as long as we dont cause our own death we will be flying in space one day..

  • i think there are aliens but i think they would be scared lifeless like i would be and also if they did observe us from millions of light years away they would probably just be seeing the micro organisms developing or the dinosaurs not us so they wouldn't want to come here (if traveling through the cosmos is possible)

  • I'm a Whovian, of course I believe in aliens!

  • Ok...If we ever going to go to another galaxy....There better would be tons of bacon, and if not, they're dead.

  • Comment removed

  • they will probably looking for resources. they might pull a US-to-native Americans on us.

  • when we communicate with other living beings, it will be through math. We will send a picture of a circle with a line in it. and we will send the symbol for pi. they, hopefully, will send their symbol for pi, and our understanding will be through the language of math.

  • Sorry, I had to got and re-watch this, because I was distracted by the Jesus Jedi tee shirt

  • Aliens have to be out there. The universe is so huge! It would be arrogant to think that WE are the only life out there.

  • The possibility of there NOT being other intelligent life out there is the one I find hard to accept. The universe is so mind-bogglingly huge that there MUST be other life. I'm just waiting for the Vulcans to make first contact in April 2063!

  • Ask somebody who is LDS whether there are other civilizations. That is, of course, unless you can use science to disprove the existence of a God (I say this last part sarcastically, which I probably shouldn't, but the truth is that nobody has ever proven scientifically whether God exhists or not, and the bigger truth is that the universe doesen't care if we argue about it or not, because there are truths we can learn from even the possibility, not to mention whether He does exhist or not.)

  • It's so vast, there's no way we can be alone. Perhaps they just don't know we're here, or perhaps they're so far away that we can't detect us yet. Perhaps they are watching us, observing quietly from the sidelines. I believe that when, not if, they decide to contact us, they are not going to percieve us as a threat, If they have travelled so far, what is the point in attacking a civilisation with less technology?

  • When I was younger, my answer would have been 'yeah right', but now I cannot turn away the possibility of there being life with how much of the universe we have not- and can not- explore. It'd be silly and presumptuous to believe otherwise; I'm certain there are other types of smaller life like bacteria and possibly animals, and I accept the fact that there could be a higher species not destroying their planet like we are, and if that's the case, I believe they will be more likely to find us.

  • I think there's life out there. But kinda like bacteria and weird looking animals. Not like advanced species who build spaceships and abduct people.

  • Aliens will be out there. Its not possible to be otherwise. I've got a feeling thought, that it will be, at most like having an ultra long distance pen pal who takes ages to reply. Unless we develop instantaneous teleportation to any mapped co-ordinate.

  • no doubt there's life out there! i think that we will be able to see at least one civilization but the question is when will they find us? what if one day you get a knock on the door and some one with 30 thousand eyes and 3 nipples is asking you if you would buy this new product of theirs? i think that they have a higher chance of finding us than we do of finding them

  • Comment removed

  • I think that OF COURSE THERE IS LIFE OUT THERE!!!!!!!!!1 The Blow your Mind Video is all about how massive the universe is and there must be life somewhere. And if they have the technology to kill us from so far away then they should be advanced enough to know that war is stupid, if they aren't advanced enough to know that and yet can travel here to kill us then it's unlickely because they probably did kill themselves in nucleur winter.

  • Maybe the mice are the ones conducting experiments on us...

  • @molmol97 HHGTTG much?

  • @BuildItTutorials Yessir.

  • @molmol97 Whats the question that has the answer 42...

  • @molmol97 i love you. you read good books.

  • @molmol97 and maybe when aliens come to destroy our planet all the dolphins will fly away saying "so long and thanks for all the fish"

  • I believe that until we unite as a planet, there is now way we could possibly unite as a galaxy or universe. So for now we need to worry about ourselves and hope we can lower the worldsuck before the day when we encounter intelligent life that is not like us.

  • I believe anything is possible, unless proven otherwise and so far, no one has *disproven* life elsewhere

So, essentially, I suppose my answer would be "yes".

  • Well, obviously they won't kill us. It's like you said, once their signals get to us, they'll all be dead.

  • I think its inevitable...there has to be something out there. We also have to consider an advanced society that isnt humanoid. Maybe there are some really smart four legged mammals with diamond-shape based skeletons like in Phillip Pullman's The Subtle Knife.

  • yes, and they will try to rip our heads off, and eat them for breakfast.

  • Government is keeping it under control, don't be a dumbass

  • Comment removed

  • actualy i think there is a math formula it says 20 civilizations exist in our universe i saw it on discovery...

  • This video didn't forget to be awesome

  • technically extraterrestrial is not an alien unless they enter the planet illegally. the correct term for them is extraterrestrial life

  • A passage from Angels and Demons kinda sums it up for me. I know you're an atheist, Hank, but I'm a Quaker without many traditional religious views, and I do believe that there is a presence out there but that we cannot be its only focus, if it even focuses, which I don't think it does. Long story short, we evolved/created this remarkable advanced civilization, and it's impossible that we are the only sentient beings in such a massive and varied universe.

  • there has to be aliens i think. its kinda like 'horten hears a hoo' for me like ever star holds its own planets like a star is a sun to other planits

  • FOR CRYING OUT LOUD ALIENS! JUST PAY ATTENTION TO US! WE FEEL LONLEY!

  • o my god i love They Live

  • where'd the alien on the front go?

  • Hey what if as humanity on Earth we are that little annoying race to the rest of the universe -sending out our signals and probes and whatnot- and they are all just shaking their heads saying "those poor humans...so young so stupid" haha we are all of existence's little sibling who is trying so desperately to be noticed :P

  • I believe that that one meteor does contain fossilized martian life.

  • Wait, can someone explain to me how the ultra-high frequency broadband signals can be detected tens of thousands of light years away when they have only been around for such a short time?

  • I am very sure that there is life on other planets... but I think it´s not necessary that they evolved the way we did. probably they don´t even use technology. maybe, developing a mind like ours isn´t that necessary - just take a look around... it causes more problems than it solves, so probably intelligence isn´t what life and evolution aim for. %)

  • i think that any planet can have life. maybe there bodies dont need water or oxygen to live they need other things.

  • My theory is that we, as a race, were born on many planets, and that since some planets didn't provide a suitable atmosphere, they became extinct. And the humans we do find, will have, of course, evolved. So, to put it simply, every alien is a humanoid mutant thingy. :D

  • yes there is life out there. and i hate people who say we are alone. because if we were alone...thats the biggest waste of space in the history of the universe.

  • @tronfan20394 contact contact contact contact contact contact

  • @tronfan20394 we are alone :D !

  • Yes, there is something out there. No, we won't ever find it. And if we did, they would be indifferent.

  • Very interesting Hank.

    :)

  • Are you a muppet? I'm just asking.

  • I love your shirt.

  • When Hank mentioned aliens watching us in a zoo, was anyone else reminded of Slaughterhouse V?

  • Even if a civilization lasted a million years (about 5x longer than the existence of humans, and about 300x longer than human civilization), that time frame is infinitesimally small compared to the age of the universe. If the entire life of the universe was represented in the 70 year lifespan of a human, that 1-million-year-old civilization would last less than 2 days. The chance of two civilizations existing at the same time is very slim . Aliens probably HAVE existed, but they are long gone

  • @delfuego33 Yes, but there is so much chances for life that what you just said cancels itself out.

  • Anything smart enough to be able to reach us would be smart enough to stay away from us.

Humans are VIOLENT when provoked, and I think legitimate, provable alien contact would count as provocation. Plus all the movies we have about killing aliens. Wars and armies prove that humanity's first response to a perceived threat is to ATTACK IT.

So, there probably are aliens out there, they just don't don't care about us.

  • theres an one hundred percent that there are.

  • @ibetweetinonyou there's *never* one hunded percent

  • @rowena137 they've already proved alien life on the moon. intelligent life mmmm not yet

  • @ibetweetinonyou agreed =] but whats this alien life on the moon?

  • @rowena137 its only like tiny bacteria on the moon

  • Hit 3 when Watching The Video or just click here 1:10

  • @sandgerdi123 'zits'. What a wonderful reply to such an informative and compelling video. You weren't thinking about aliens, or how small Earth is, you were thinking about zits.

I'm sorry, you forgot to be awesome.

  • @dolphin64575 I am Awesome And Have Always Been!!

  • No. I don't think there's any other life in the galaxy. I think we're alone.

  • the high school down the street from my house is called enrico fermi high school.

    THE MORE YOU KNOW.

  • "Fighting over which religion is more accurate." <--- that is brilliance right there. I love your [collective: i.e. Hank and John's] wondrous insights and lines. And their off-handed, so it's genuine. Brilliant.

  • I vote zoo. I have tried to convince my friends that it is possible that we may live in what is essentially an ant farm.

  • English please

  • time lords are our 'gods' ^^

  • @animewolf1284 yay!!! best time lord ever, GO DOCTOR!!!!

  • Well I'm a muslim...

  • soundwaves are so much slower than light, perhaps the sound will finally arrive as the sun explodes. Hopefully, to complete the awesome of nerdfighteria, it explodes on a wednesday

  • @spidermanandsnape Sound doesn't travel throught empty space lol

we can observed sounds based from light waves though lol

  • @spidermanandsnape only they're radimagnetic not soundwaves -_-

  • @spidermanandsnape Sound waves can't travel through vacuüm anyway.

  • @Gyroglle Thank god, someone who understands. They're not transmitting sound waves, they're transmtting radio waves. HUGE difference...

  • @spidermanandsnape Not sound; sound doesn't travel in space. Radio waves, which are actually--in a sense--extremely low-frequency light.

I may have just gotten something horribly wrong; would someone please correct me if I have?

  • @spidermanandsnape . no, a sunday

  • ALL galaxies are moving away from each other somewere around the speed of light so those messages may never reach another civilization .

  • @EarthshiftF2 However, if there was a civilization circling one of the hundreds of billions of stars in our (non-expanding) galaxy, they might. I don't know if they'll still be readable, but hey.

If they can come to our planet, their tech is nth gazillion better than ours, so we better hope they're freindly, not...

    GIANT SQUIDS OF ANGER!!!

  • I don't care as long as doctor who is real

  • @kitkatorange444 AGREED! Completely agreed =D

  • @shatteredrain1 i wish the doctor would hurry up and show himself....

  • Plug in those factors into the drake equation, with the assumption that earth does not have enough fossil fuels, and I assume that the Fermi paradox resolves its self. It is an unfortunate likelihood, and one I dread is quite bad news.

  • BOMB THE WHITE HOUSE THEN...

  • I hate to correct you hank, but the signals we've been broadcasting into space can't travel faster than the speed of light, and we've only been broadcasting for between 20 to 50 years. So we have only been able to let aliens within the nearest 50 light years know we're here. Now that's not a small distance, but if you shrink the probability of finding artificial life down from the entire universe to a 50 light year radius it's a lot more likely that we don't find anyone else.

  • @mynameismatt2010 But we should still hear them...

  • @THELITTLERIVERNERD If we assume that there's only 1 earth like planet per galaxy and that every earth like planet has life the only way we'd be able to hear anything is if we heard it from the closest galaxy to us, which is about two and a half million light years away, so they would have had to have been broadcasting 2.5 million years ago for it to reach us, and we'd have to broadcast for another 2499950 years before it reaches them. communication between planets would take 5 million years.

  • Confession: I've been a liiiiiilttle bit afraid of mice ever since I read A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I just wanted to get that out there.
