The sciences and the meticulous practitioner's of it have done more to advance mankind than any snake oil medicine or pseudo-science you folks tend to believe so quickly.

A lot of the times, counter arguments aren't even considered. Scientific journals, peer reviews and careful experimentation can't be bypassed by the pseudo-sciences oh a whim.

@debaser22078- How long does the average doctor in USA live to? Dr Joel Wallach in his book "Dead Doctors Don't Lie" reports the average is 57 years! There are many people in 3rd world countries that have no hospitals, doctors or drugs that live much longer average lives than that! Should not doctors in USA know, practice & afford good health? While looking at this lovely kid, I feel every parent choosing an autism treatment for his/her child is advised to select only those interventions deemed "evidence-based."

While completing the research phase of my M. Ed. dissertation with respect to Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA), I addressed the subject of ABA being "evidence-based." Some are missing a key point here: This is a child with AUTISM. Not all people with autism ARE the same. If they are not the same , then teaching & learning is going 2 be different as well. Rewards depend on where the person is & what gets their attention. It's also import 2 remember what the goal of d session is. Is it really 2 teach him what's on the cards, or is it 2 get his attention r 2 get some kind of interaction with her? Is the goal 2 just get him to interact 4 x amt of time?

An example of everything that's wrong with autism treatment. Decontextualized, adult-directed, and irrelevant. Teach the kid what a shovel is (using DTT) during sand play. Teach him what the shovel does, the shovel's color, use various shovels, make him ask for it (so he can use it; natural reinforcement of the communicative exchange). Naturalistic use of ABA requires extensive planning and expertise in education as well as behaviorism. Too many folks choose easy instruction, like this clip.

WOW! this is not aba...she is attempting to do Discrete Trials which is a small portion of aba and even then she is doing a poor job at that...she did not do error correction and therefore he got it wrong a second time..and the whole "its" and him saying shovel is just obnoxious! plus the physical does seem a extreme too!

This a bad example of ABA/DTT There shouldn't be such physical contact pulling the boy. Show him some respect. They should be both sat either side of a table or tray so he's upright and alert and can't fall back.

Prompting does not teach, the child knows hes getting a treat so he is going to MEMORIZE what he needs to so he can get that treat, hes not LEARNING!! Try looking up DIR/Floortime approach, which is, in my opinion, much more effective

@sarahann0818 it's not about learning in the conventional way, it's about teaching autistic children to interact. see how she keeps prompting him to sit up and pay attention. this is how autistic children learn to pay attention, and it stops them from retreating into their own world.

@sarahann0818 The theory behind errorless teaching is that children with autism do not learn as successfully from their mistakes as typical children may, but instead continue to repeat them. Also, frustration following incorrect responses associated with trial and error learning can actually provoke problem behavior such as tantrums,etc. ET also avoids any chance of teaching a chain of errors.

You definitely have to give the child choices, especially because their preference can vary even by the minute, and you always want to use a reinforcer that will be powerful. Just because you know a child likes something doesn't mean you use that as a reinforcer throughtout the entire session. Plus giving the child a choice promotes self-confidence

Learning does not have to be errorless. Not looking at all the other issues with this clip such as poor discrete trials and reinforcement concerns the part that stands out to me is the use of ineffective prompting.

errorless training is deomonstrated when the therapist was covering up the incorrect cards with her hands so he cannot get it wrong.

another example is the prompting, "What is this, its a shovel." and than the child repeats "Its a shovel" the therapist gives him the answer right before she asks him what it is, so he will know to say shovel.

i cant believe she said to the child what do you want, you the teacher give the child approproiate reinforcement, up the reinf for better answers, vary the reinf otherwise the child will not be motivated and will learn poorly, count how many times she praised the child remember you get what you reinforce

I agree there is an absence of a reinforcement plan - especially around the sitting. But I disagree that giving a child choices is an ineffective way to reinforce some students. If the child has control issues having a 'choice' is the TRUE SRt. Also if you would like to be differential with your SRt for a job v.well done, it can be effective to let the child pick from a selection of their favorite toys as a special privilege. It comes down to IF IT WORKS (i.e it is actually a SRt) then WHY NOT?

Give me the shovel, help tact with hand good but then the tutor should ask the child a mastered tact/question like clap your hands/whats your name and return to the question give me the shovel and not over kill it shovel shovel while praising the childs wrong responses- why is she enthusiastic shovellll when the child got it wrong, vary your reinfrocement/ tone of voice, go over mastered pictures and return to shovel
