@MrCensin It runs on rails in the street and the IBB call it a "tramway" (see 0:45) and there is also a Metro in Istanbul, but yes with modern light rail the tram/metro distinction is very blurred.
@timosha21 Platforms in the central area all have human attendants ready to pounce on any such offenders. Also, having spent time in both cities, I find people in Istanbul are more civil-minded and polite than their New York counterparts so they just would not do that sort of thing.
Years ago cars supplied by ABB for the metro ran on a street tramway along the main street past Laleli. These cars are for high platforms, and thus there were high-level platforms on the street. Paper tickets were sold in a kiosk near the stop, and when entering the stop, one dropped a ticket in a box under the watching eye of a staff member. Times have changed!
