That's why the Marines (and other military units) learn it as part of their basic training because in case you don't have a weapon and you have to kill someone at close range, then martial arts can come in handy :)

Liquid was fluent in seven different languages. I would say Spanish, French, Russian. The manual said he could speak Arabic like a native, after being captured by Iraqis during the Gulf War. It also mentioned Malaysian, which is plausible since that's only a Category II language and a snap for a man with an IQ of 180. I can't guess what the other language would have been.

Snake could definitely speak French. I personally believe he was also proficient in Arabic (Act I, and Gulf War experience), Spanish (Act II), Russian (Big Boss was superbly fluent and would have wanted FOXHOUND soldiers to be knowledgeable in that language). He may also have been able to speak Czech, as Prague seems to be the locale in Act 3, except with more Cyrillic lettering everywhere, but apparently there is some evidence in MG2 he couldn't, though I haven't played that game.

In MG2, the fact that he can't speak Czech is a big plot point, because a character he has to rescue can only speak in Czech and he has to find a translator, although I wouldn't put it past him to have learned it in his free time just to spite Marv.
