The Continental Congress issued a day of prayer in1775 to designate "a time for prayer in forming a new nation", President John Adams declared May 9, 1798 as "a day of solemn humiliation, fasting, and prayer," during which citizens of all faiths were asked to pray "that our country may be protected from all the dangers which threaten it".
Prayer was a significant part of The foundation of The United States of America.
Reagan had some very clear purpose, but it has been about two decades now since he was guiding us to that shining city on the hill. Even the Republican Party is run by fools who despise the legacy that man left us. G.W. Bush famously called Reagan's policies "voodoo economoics" & spent most of presidency trying to escape the burden (as he saw it) of Reagan's legacy. G.W. Bush was clueless, & so has been his son in the end. As to the Dems. LBJ ruined that party's anti-communist base.
i agree, Reagan did have some clarity. unfortunately, with that personal character, he seemed not to be a great judge of the character and integrity of others. after 20 years of dynastic rule, we are now sold a "messiah." the last vestiges of George Washington's insight died with Kennedy, King, and Kennedy, and we have been working steadily toward something very akin to national socialism since. however, we are a resilient people (when we're awake) and will come back around to sense eventually.
This is why we are doomed. If president tried to speak this way today. Our elitist establishment ridicule him to scorn. FDR was closer to the radical leftist media & gov't today then to the ordinary Christian people of our nation then. He still knew what kind of people we still were then, & acted accordingly. We have allowed ignorant scoffers to rattle our commitment to the eternal verities. We have allowed the confidence of our faith to be stolen from us.
this is the element of American government that seems to have gotten lost following the "assassination years." a president is supposed to act on behalf of the people and in accordance with their values, ignoring his own personal leanings to the benefit of the nation. We have not had a president of clear purpose in many decades now...and the whole nation suffers for it.
