Good point but remember that boxing never presumes to be self-defense. It is a combat sport that is applicable to self-defense. If you really want to know how to defend yourself you have to box well and be good wrestler and have basic defense offense against weapons.
@simsonyee completely true. I don't like mma cos it's not my thing but it's a hell lot more effective in the streets than boxing and I'm a boxer. A boxer does have an advantage over your average "wannabe street tough guy", though.
Nice in theory, but those 'uber sparring' videos were so unrealistic it isn't funny, I didn't know that slapping an opponent interrupts an impending haymaker, and that somehow sequentially fighting many opponents prepares you for being bundled, or slapping someone can knock them out of a mount after you've just been booted.
I'd rather trust in power, toughness and knowing when to run than trust in some belief that I could fight multiple/armed opponents or that Wing Chun trumps Judo for G'n'P.
I don't know how anybody disagrees on this idea. LOOK AT WHAT HES SAYING. For those who still dont understand have never been in a street fight. Cause theres no jabs, dancing around, or timed rounds in a streetfight. Real fighting is fast, without notice and devastating. Not to mention chances are on the streets your attacker isnt going to start approaching you few meters away from you like they do in tournaments. Lots of its close range and there isnt time to think but just to act.
I was excited someone put my thoughts to a real situation. I think its great that someone is going out of their way to show other people that the real life scenario is 1.) real, 2.) dangerous, 3.) fast (5 seconds or less). How many sparing matches last less than 5 seconds and end with one person unconcious on the floor or in agony wounded beyond point of being able to stand up and walk away? Thanks for the heads up. The videos with the comparison were funny.
I came across this video today. It's really good and got me laughing, at myself! Let me share a story. I have never been mugged before or been in a street fight. But I had a couple of bad dreams lately where I end up on the receiving end of knife or two or three assailants. I usually can't do much! I hope in reality all the Karate I do isn't totally out the window. I shall investigate the principles set out by Dave Hazard and find out why he was such a successful bouncer in London for 8 years.
@DragonboyVNY I've had similar dreams where I punched someone as hard as I could and there was no effect, I found out that psychologists relate this dream to feelings of inadequacy and being powerless. I think it's the feeeling we have in the back of our minds when we think, "Would the martial art/self defense style I'm studying really help me when it matters?"
Hey, good video. At first I thought it was going to be another overblown "sparring is useless and you should always train our way, or you're going to be defenseless!" type of video. However, you made some good points and pointed out some good ideas for drills and training. You really qualified your statements at the end by pointing out the good things that sparring can do for people. Keep up the good work.
Yes I do agree but one with out the other is on the way to defeat. We need as much training as posilble. You need to find your fighting spirit that only comes from sparring.Sernerio training will only give you the method, then it does become dangerous for the student.I believ that we want to give our student all the weapons they can hold and fire with.
First, thanks everyone for the feedback. I think conventional sparring is great - what I am saying is that it needs to be modify for self defence , thats all.You like to spar , thats great , just change the STARTING POINT to reflect reality a little bit better aka scenario training . it is same as sparring: full contact, full resistance , no co-operation the only difference is the starting point ( ie multiple opponents, knives, in the dark etc) . I use humor to dumb down ,simplify this concept .
Sparring is a drill, and excellent drill....being good at sparring doesn't mean that you're a good fighter no matter how 'realistic' you think your sparring is.
'However, the problem arises when people represent a great drill to the public as REALITY TESTING'...seems pretty clear to me.
This is Foolish type of training .Granted fighting for your life is much different than sport but this type of training will never let you know if you have the will to fight and continue when you are out of gas or hurt..Sparring(not patty cake) will give you that, wait I for got if you spar you might kill each other.I met many people with this mind set and when they come hear then end up bowing down humble at their lack of ability. In the end you need both types of training period.
Yes, I think you have a point - and I think the video makes very valid points as well. The issue is how do you actually train for real life violence - and the answer is that it is very, very difficult to re-create the psychological stress, and stars round your head reality of a real fight, in a dojo environment. But, technical martial arts training aside, it is possible to make some people tougher and able to react under stress - and sparring is one of the ways to achieve that. But - good video.

megadk93 good point that is why we made this clip, some people dont seem to understand what sparring is designed for sport fights, and even some honor matches on the street. you do and thats good, you just missed the point of the video. but lets not start calling people names on here, last thing we want is people to internet spar on here. lol
this video is bullshit. sparring aint for self defense, but as a preparation to ring fights, and in a ring fight nobody jumps you from behind, kicks you lying on the floor or attacks you in group. FAIL ³
@megadk93@megadk93 i think you need to watch the video again more carefully to see the message this video is trying to send before you get your panties in a bunch.
Sparring is a great technique to learn how to fight, but sparring is NOT fighting.
the point of this video as i see it is to be prepared for any situation and meet it with a realistic approach, ( if you want to survive) or you will be hurt greivously. train with more than one partner, and don't be afraid to let your emotions flare when you fight. the trick is to stay calm, and keep breathing. slow deep breaths are the necessary tool to keep your mind calm
Great video!!!!!!! Funny too but it's exactly what people need to hear when the conversation of real training comes up because you see far too many videos focused on one on one fighting when that can change in the blink of an eye in the street.
THIS IS HILLARIOUS sorry... made megiggle.
