I think U2 went through a bit of a metamorphosis in the 90s. 80s they were a straight up rock/alternative rock band, but zooropa and pop seemed very experimental, and not to me very U2(not that there weren't a few good songs on there). I'd say today they do throw a bit of pop into their music to attract a wider audience, but they still largely remain true to their 80s feel. Most of my fave u2 songs are split between the 84-91 and 03--- eras.

You are so right, havent heard this song for a long time. I think of my high school sweet heart when I here songs from this album. What great memories!
MY FAV U2 song! Saw this tour at The Arragon Ball Room in Chicago (1984) ROCKED MY WORLD FOREVER!! Seen every tour in US since then! They're the sexist group of Irish bloks EVER!
This album has not only this brill song, which I love to hear at night, but also a song that makes your life worth living. Yes, that song which title has 3 letters. If you know which I'm talking about, don't say it ^_^
Plus, WIRE, OMG! EASILY COULD BE THE BEST ROCK SONG EVER, and Sort Of Homecoming, Elvis Presley and America, Promenade, Pride, all lovely.
U2 are the heroes of my life. I'm a complete fan since I heard New Year's Day for the 1st time...in 1982. When I think about it, it already makes 26 years.... means that I'm oooold...
This song was my love's favourite.... My love left us 3 years ago, and the only thing I'm now waiting for, is to die and rejoin him among the angels. RIP my angel, I love you and miss you so much, we'll be together again soon.
i know its olschool - but hey! i love them, especially that oldschool records - this is very spacy and sounds like music :) respect. u2 will never die :)
U2 .........what can i say ..i saw them when they toured in 1980 at a club in leeds around the same time i saw motorhead bomber tour i think it was about 2 quid to see them they still rock this tune was by far there best i loved the joshua tree album and saw them live at elland road they was awsome ..im not politically motivated by them its there exellent songs that keep me still loving them..... they is legendary
"The Unforgettable Fire" is the fourth track on U2's 1984 album of the same name and was released as the album's second single. The song was inspired by an art exhibition of the same name by victims of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Try doing a little research. Might learn something. :)
it was inspired for the exhibit, but for Bono it extends way beyond that.people like Martin Luther King and Ghandi had the'unforgettable fire ,so did Elvis Presley ,do your research might learn a little more than what you think you might know.

you are 100 % right, this was the high point of their career for me, after this they were over produced and watered down, still capable but not like this ... thanks guys this is still wonderful
I love this song, and it's one of their better videos for the abstraction and emotive quality. I wonder why the walk through the snow, like in New Year's Day? Is it that idea of winter being a season of longing for new life?
For me it is full of mystery, and so full of longing for something you can't quite name. Respecting your privacy, and may not be able to be put in words, but how did this song form you?
