Thank you for the warning at the start of the film; this was so shocking and unlike today's tame movies that don't scare a mouse; this was the most graphic, bloodcurdling film I've ever seen in my life. I had a heart attack while watching this and almost died. My friend watching this with me wasn't so lucky. ... LOL
the american version has a different music score- european version lacks the warning in the beginning as well. german title : Die Stunde wenn Dracula kommt.Steele can be seen again in the ghost on you tube.or in Fellinis 8 1/2.
This movie is fucking epic and I thank you for posting clips of it on Youtube. Two days ago, I purchased the two Mario Bava boxsets and are being shipped to my house. I can hardly wait to see this movie in its entity.
I used to take this from my uncle's room and watch it as a kid...he ended up giving this to me but I lost it over the years...THANK YOU monster4josh for putting this up a true classic! :-)
The real Monsters exist and roam around wearing richly garbed, cheered by brainwashed public and who feed on young innocent soul, traumatizing them forever. I wish if I had power I could have taken vengeance upon this satanic institution called church for Inquisition and other horrible things upon humanity for centuries.
@aitch3 Corman was just one of many director/producers who worked through AIP, but he did direct quite a number of films for AIP. His own company was Filmways and later New World Pictures. AIP was run by Samuel Z. Arkoff and James H. Nicholson...
Last year I was up in Milwaukee staying at a friend's house around Halloween and we went to see this for free at the University. It was a special midnight screening. Very cool.

what a brave girl. i feel sorry for the ones who died as an innocent who were acused as a witch or a servent of Satan. back then, if you were accused by even one person, the courts find you guilty right away. those judgement back then were not onlt unfair, but just terrifying
I saw this about '61 or so. I was about 11. When that mask got hammered onto her face I just about pooped! I then watched with my jacket over my head and peeking through the jacket sleeve and then after awhile I switched to peeking thought the vent holes in my baseball cap. Man, was I scared witless! Ha, ha, ha!!
There was no inquizition in Moldavia :) But it seems that Moldavia, Transylvania and Wallachia became a kind of dark place with vampires, witches etc.
Was Barbara Steele "typecast" or did she just enjoy doing these roles? I cannot think of any movie where she was the nice lady. She was always the wicked woman, the unfaithful gold-digger wife, stuff like that.
Mario Bava's classic masterpiece additionally enhanced by the flawless Les Baxter score. Although the foreign score was good, watching "Black Sunday" without the Baxter score is like watching a totally different film.
i dont think its the gory part that makes the film scary, its more the element of the film and the subject matter for that. plus...it was 1960, things like that were probably seen as way creepier back then as we would think they are now. idk, just givin some ideas hehe
@monster4josh It is also weird that in this video they do not show the man ripping open her dress as was shown in the version that I saw. He looked way too happy about it.
@anirak90 Hell, the Herschel Gordon Lewis stuff ( like Blood Feast and 2000 Maniacs ) came out just a few years after THIS flick. Nonetheless, having a spiked mask pounded into your face would sure HURT in ANY age!
There is another dub which (IMO) sounds a bit clearer and the lines are different in places - this was the one that was shown on either TCM or Starz Encore - I think it initially coincided with the 2007 Anchor Bay DVD release.
There's two versions I'm privy to--the International cut, and the AIP American edit. TV probably had it's own edit as well, but I'm not sure. "All The Colors of the Dark" probably explains all the details, but I haven't read that entry to this very fine book yet!
Man, that opening scene was actually quite scary. To put a mask with nails or knives on someone's face... Ehhh. I get chills thinking about it

o título desse filme no Brasil foi A maldição do Demônio. Assistí em 1973. Mal conseguí dormir naquela noite. Passou na Bandeirantes.

one more question--AIP was Roger Corman's deal correct?

@monster4josh Thnx for the info. Trying to brush up on my film history. I am ignorant about the horror genre.
aitch3 1 year ago
NOT a Hollywood movie, but filmed entirely in Italy! Bava rarely ventured outside his native country.
monster4josh 1 year ago
So Bava went to H-wood to make this for R. Corman?
aitch3 1 year ago
@aitch3 Actually American International had the distribution rights within the USA. Corman had nothing to do with this film.

That whole "mature minds" opening was just a marketing gimmick to sell this low budget film. There were far gorier movies than this at the time
