I don't think the words "dumb" can be used synonymously with the word "ignorant." I'm sure there are lots of "smart" people like doctors, engineers and lawyers that couldn't have answered some of these questions. Are they part of the "dumbest generation?" Of course not.
If I ask my english teacher what the photoelectric effect is and she doesn't know, does that mean she's dumb?
"If I ask my english teacher what the photoelectric effect is and she doesn't know, does that mean she's dumb?"
No, but if you asked her if "Nazi Germany" was an ally of the U.S. and she did not know, she would be. Even though that is not necessarily English related.
Intelligence should not be measured by one's ability to regurgitate trivia on command. It should be measured by one's ability to retrieve, process, and analyze information, as well as what they choose to do with it.
Are you smarter than a 5th grader is a shame as far as a" test of intelligence" adjacent to a child. It's simply playing on natural "psychology" of the mind. A normal human brain does not preserve every detail of everything learned in life. Hence, all the tiny details of crap that happened decades ago in 5th grade is naturally going to be forgotten. However, the kids who just learned the material within a few weeks prior have no problem. I have a Masters Degree and I trouble with this stuff!
There's a wealth of things you DON'T know... Starboard comes from Old English steorbord, literally meaning the side on which the ship is steered. The old English term stēorbord descends from the Old Norse words stýri meaning "rudder" (from the verb stýra, literally "being at the helm", "having a hand in") and borð meaning etymologically "board", then the "side of a ship".
But I guess you'd never need to know that unless you're on a boat and that never happens, right?
The fact that we have a game show like that only shows how dumb Americans have become. However, even I didn't know some of the answers right away. Are you sure that's 4th grade history?? No one told me in teh 4th grade about Notre Dame (although I learned about it later on). And they certainly never said anything about a starboard in 5th grade English. What are these, private school 5th questions??
how is knowing that the right side of a boat is called the starboard side considered 3rd grade english?

"Apple has not disrespected an entire generation and country for social and material gain."
WOW, that comment alone speaks to the naiveté and utter stupidity he is referring to. Good luck.

A) There are more questions than that.
B) Who is going to take care of him when he sick? A person my age.
C) IQ declines as you age, so logically speaking, you actually become dumber as you get older, not smarter.

I knew the quote, but I didn't know it was from Horace Greenley (although the name sounds familiar). I thought it was someone like Randolph Hearst.
